Help Gingerbread/OTA issues Thread

Been picking around re: the bluetooth issue and not hearing much yet. Did find one user that attempted to recreate it but his actually worked ok. He was rooted and using the Gingertiny kernel however. Not sure yet if that has anything to do with it or if it's more random.
 
An update (I guess) on the Bluetooth issue...

I searched around and found where people had supposedly used the "Bluetooth File Transfer" app to send their contacts to their car stereo...

What was odd was, an attempt to do this gave me only a bunch of error messages (saying my Kia Soul didn't have any of the protocols to send the contacts)... then it suddenly worked.

After the fluke, any attempt to use voice commands failed again.

So apparently, there is some SERIOUS bug in Gingerbread where it refuses to send contacts properly via Bluetooth. Using Bluetooth File Transfer doesn't work as intended either - but somehow the process alone breaks the barrier and allows it to work (temporarily). But if I have to use a 3rd-party app every time I enter my car, it's still broken, IMO... shouldn't be this way.

What a serious, unforgivable mess.
 
Unforgivable mess is when the RUU is out with the Sprint build.prop error still there. That is what you call time to clean house in the coding department. Unthinkable.
 
Never had a problem prior to the GB update. Since then my Google Voice app is not getting text messages until I manually launch it and hit refresh. I checked settings and sync is enabled. Also removed and reinstalled the application but no go. Anyone else seeing this?
 
Not really sure if this is an issue or not. After the update, i got tired of seeing the Sprint app link, so i uninstalled market updates, knowing that it would update itself, and maybe fix itself. However, it did NOT update to latest version of the market. It has only updated to the last version previous to latest version.
I actually preferred this version, so....not sure it is an issue for me. Might be for someone else, though.

Also, sometimes the confirmations that sent messages were received, sometimes come in hours later than the recipient actually gets the message. Never did that with Froyo.
 
You can try downloading HTC sync for the device drivers. You don't actually have to run the program, just go through the setup stuff and then close out at the last minute before launching the program. By then, the drivers are already set up.

Odd though that it won't at least be recognized as a mass storage device. Even without the USB drivers I'd think that would happen.

OK I downloaded HTC sync, and ran the program, my phone is still not recognized. I hooked up the phone to the computer and it said it was searching for HTC sync on the computer, and then it said it could not find it on the PC. I am at a total loss here, even tried using the USB ports on the back of the computer, versus the ports on the face of the PC where the card readers are etc, and still nothing. The phone is not recognized anywhere. I'm about to call Verizon AGAIN and if they cannot help me I think I might have to take a trip up to the store and see if THOSE people up there can do anything. If nothing else I'm going to tell them they need to replace my phone. Not sure if they will or not but it's worth a shot?
 
Well, I have an answer. Before calling Verizon, I decided to dig out an old charger for my EnV Touch....used that USB cable to connect to the computer, and VOILA....it worked. Apparently it wasn't an update issue at all but a USB cable issue....wow...after all this headache...

Just had another odd thing happen. I plugged my Inc into my work computer via USB, to charge, and i got a message to download device drivers for my device. WHile this is not unusual, this is....it told me my device is a T-Mobile MyTouch 4G. Talk about an identity crisis!

Not sure if this is related, but Gmail is doing the same for me. I have to manually refresh. Anyone else seeing this?
 
I am also experiencing the Bluetooth issues. Bluetooth worked perfectly in my car prior to the Gingerbread update. Ever since, my phone will not connect to the car. Pairs, but won't connect. Verizon tech support told me it's HTC's problem. Originally, HTC tech support acted like they never heard of such a problem, even though I have read about it on many other forums - all models of cars and phones affected after Gingerbread.

Only after I responded very unfavorably to an HTC Tech Support Survey did someone actually help me. They were able to acknowledge that HTC is aware of the problem. Their response:

I received a response back from the corporate office on your Bluetooth issue. They state that are aware of the issue and are looking into it but have no ETA on a fix yet. This usually means that it will take an update to fix the issue. Unfortunately we do not have information on an update at this time, which doesn

I also just recently found out that images sent via text message will not download. Used to work fine before Gingerbread. I haven't even bothered complaining about that one.

In conclusion, I am anticipating with great joy the release of iPhone5. I was a huge Droid fan - loved it. Until Gingerbread. They blew it and lost a customer.


Devices that ship with GB will run awesome. You have to consider that when this phone came out GB was but a distant dream.

Well being a software engineer, I would also expect HTC to fully test ALL changes to the software with all devices it was going to push it out to before actually pushing it out. Clearly they did not test this software properly given all the various problems people have been having. I am not optimistic that it won't just happen again if I purchase another Droid phone and the next untested software version comes out. It's a vicious cycle.

That's true to an extent, but these issues are fairly significant, not just a couple little annoyances. When you have major changes in software functionality, you have to test the functions that changed thoroughly, or else this happens. EOL doesn't mean it's no longer produced - it means it's no longer supported, which is not true for this phone. I have had this phone for 1 year and I have a year left on my 2 year plan - so unless I wanted to pay a ridiculous amount of money for a new phone, I'm stuck with it. I am fortunate enough to be able to use my daughter's upgrade to get a new phone for myself.

All I'm saying is that Apple produces more reliable software than Google at this point. This is likely due to the fact that Google software can run on multiple hardware devices where Apple only needs to run on one. Apple also responds very quickly when its users cry foul when they send out software that is buggy. Regardless, I depend on Bluetooth working with my car way too much to give HTC/Google a mulligan on this. Given that I have (choose, really) to live with the phone for 2 years, I want something reliable and functional. Until Android proves to be that reliable across all hardware that runs it, they have lost me. Which is really disappointing to me because I really do love the Android OS more than I love the Apple OS. It's got to work, though.
 
So when ios 4 came out it ran perfectly on the 3gs? I think not.

And while I do get what your saying I disagree to an extent. Bluetooth wouldn't even be an issue for me personally. Perhaps not for a large amount of users also. Plus they are working on a fix.

Clearly I won't convince you that I'm making the right move for the right reasons. There are several fairly significant issues that many customers are complaining about with regards to Gingerbread - not just Bluetooth. People have lost apps, txt messaging doesn't work, etc. To the extent that people are speculating that the release has been pulled. My problem is that no one will acknowledge anything. Not Verizon. Not HTC. Not Google.

Working on a fix doesn't help me. Knowing when a fix will be available would be helpful. If they know the problem, they should know how to fix it - especially since it worked flawlessly before the update. I know you don't care, but it's important to feel like I can trust that main features of my phone will not be jeopardized by the next OS release.

I never thought I'd have to make this decision. I was never in love with the iPhone. I'm still not. But reliability of my basic phone features is an absolute must. I use my cell phone as my only personal phone - I have no landline.

This is really similar to the old Microsoft vs. Mac argument. Except the reason people stuck with buggy Windows was because of the killer apps that had no peers in Mac. People are willing to sacrifice a blue screen every once in a while as long as Office was there when they rebooted. Only the iPhone is arguably the stronger platform, or just as strong, and less buggy now, than Android. And it has the killer apps. Different ballgame. Google better get its ducks in a row.

Out of curiosity, do you work for Google or HTC? You are a very passionate proponent.

And I think you misunderstand, please don't accuse me of not caring, just disagree with the thought that issues like this will disappear completely by switching to ios.

Fair enough. And I agree that it isn't Google's fault, but I would think and hope Google would be very interested and concerned about these things as it is their OS that is ultimately attached to Android of any flavor. I am much more angry with HTC than anyone. I consider my problems to be their fault. But, like Microsoft, anyone who has a problem with Windows on a Dell computer is likely to blame Microsoft than blame Dell, even though the fault may lie completely with Dell. Perception is sometimes stronger than reality, unfortunately.

I considered for a moment trying to get a replacement phone, but I would need to test drive it for a couple days to make sure Bluetooth works in the car, and I would still be gun-shy about the next release (is it really called Ice Cream or is that something else?).

One thing I found just as disturbing, and this may happen across all hardware vendors, including Apple, is that the HTC tech support person who ultimately dug deep enough to find out that it was a known issue (the Bluetooth thing) also told me that engineering doesn't tell tech support about any known problems. They don't communicate. Good grief - what good is tech support if they are uninformed?

Anyway, I'm not expecting you to answer to that - it's just me venting some more. I appreciate your responses and your passion. I actually wish you did work for them - then maybe something would get done properly!

Since the update I cannot download any MMS messages. Anyone know of a fix for this?


edited: I reprogrammed the phone and it seems to be working now.
 
So based on the Bluetooth issues I'm having, plus no longer being able to download pictures in text messages, plus the fact that I get the stupid "low memory" warning and I end up deleting something I needed to get rid of it every time I try and resolve it - I will be among the many millions attempting to pre-order the iPhone4S on Friday. This didn't have to happen, but HTC forced my hand. So long, Android...
 
Well, after 4 calls to Verizon, and one to HTC, I am moving on from the Incredible to the Inc 2. Not really the solution I wanted, as I loved my Inc, but due to all the issues I'm having, I don't really have any other choice. My Inc 2 will be here tomorrow.
 
A method may have been discovered for users to downgrade back to 2.2 As of now it had only been tested on 2 phones. The original purpose was for users to be able to root, but the final rooting step is not necessary, and you would be left with a stock 2.2 phone just like the day you bought it.

Well, good to know, but comes too late for me. I sent my Inc back yesterday. Maybe it will help others though.

I wonder if there is a similar process for the 2. Had to walk away during set up and 2.3.4 auto-installed.
