Root Stuck half rooted with red triangle exclamation..hellllp

Ianlmt

Newbie
Okay,

I have read through some of the tutorials (the for dummies ones etc..)

I think I am ready to start, but have some questions and need some direction please....

Okay here's my phone:

HTC evo 4g

android 2.3.3

.....What other info do you guys need? dont wanna give away a potentially confidential ## or something?

..

Okay I want to start with a "beginners root" maybe, nothing tooooo technical, but will allow me to use the hotspot wifi feature sprint has with my data connection (for free of course! ;) )

... I want to be able to have all my current apps and not lose any data or functionality...

Can you recommend a methodology to achieve this?

I see there is unrevoked3, or the revolutionary one... I dont know what the difference is between them? and I have heard there are different ROMS that are more like stock, some more custom... is there a place these are listed with descriptions?

Im sorry if it appears Im lost but I kind of am...even after reading countless threads today, feel kinda overwhelmed with information!!!

:)

If your using gingerbread just follow the steps in the gingerbread guide for rooting. Just dont do a full factory reset and you will still have all your data + superuser ability.

If you want sprint hotspot flash mikg2.55 using the instructions for flashing in the guide and backup app data using titanium backup

I had no clue what I was doing when I first rooted, I just figured I'd download the things in the list and give it a try one day if I felt like it. Less than an hour later I was rooted with a custom ROM and kernel.

Take the plunge!

I have to confess I wasnt sure 2.3.3 WAS gingerbread (shows by noobieness right!?!?!?!)... okay so I guess I am running gingerbread then..

now will I still be able to get android market post root? and I have heard that the update to 2.3.3 killed the wifi hotspot, does that mean I have to go back to 2.3.2 or whatever was before it???

thanks for the reply!

You'll be fine. I haven't done the GB root method, but it should be basically the same. You'll just want to root, then get something to backup your apps and maybe data... (try TitaniumBackup for data and apps, or Astro for apps if you want just the app (.apk) files).

Okay, so now you are rooted and have the SU icon on your app list. You are also backed up because it's better safe than sorry. SOOO... now you can flash a rom. If you like what you have right now, maybe try something recent from Mik (MikG or Mik3d)
If you like the old way, try a 2.2 sense rom (I always liked myn's warm 2.2).

Now, if you wanna get really crazy, try an AOSP rom. CM7 is pretty damn fine. Most of them are fine. A lot of them build their own source (nerd talk) and a lot use the CM7 source (more nerd talk). All that it really matters is that not every rom has everything working. Some AOSP roms don't have 4g working if that's a big thing for you.

Any questions, and ask them. Someone here will answer.

heeeeeeeeeeeelp im stuck, I have the red triangle exclamation mark thing... got to the part where it says

okay, I unplugged usb, pulled battery, tried to reboot by pressing the power and vol down, i am back on the screen, itll go to boot screen for revolutionary, when i select recovery, it goes to the htc evo 4g white screen w/ black letters, then to a black screen with a green circular arrow thing, then to the black android with red exclamation triangle over it, if i press up and power i get a menu that says reboot system now, apply update from sd card, wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache partition....

then on the bottom it has yellow writing that says E: cant open /cache/recovery/command

... sorry im kinda freaking out...was hoping this would be painless.

Not sure of what all you have installed however if you can see your hboot and it if shows s-off then you are rooted. However if it does not then you need to run revolutionary again. Its always a good idea to pay attention to what you are installing and read the guide thoroughly before starting. Revolutionary should have asked you if you want to install Clockwork Mod which is a Recovery environment. This you say yes to so you can make Nandroid Backups. After the initial root is done then you can switch recoveries. Most prefer Amon RA. IF you FOLLOW the Guide as you go along after the initial read you really shouldnt have any problems with exception to what ROM you want. (There is a bunch)

Not sure but try to rerun revolutionary and pay attention to what your installing. Just install revolutionary and Clockwork.

I followed this guide word for word til :

next we need to flash the superuser file (superuser su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip)
10.select recovery in bootloader.
11.select install .zip from sdcard.
12.find the superuser file and flash it.

time to make a nandroid backup.
13.still in recovery go back to the main menu
14.select backup and restore.
15.select backup.
16.after it is done you can reboot.

I never got to step 11... So never got an option to create a nandroid backup, or get superuser flashed...

maybe do I need to select "apply update from sdcard" in the last screen?

if I plug my phone back into revolutionary it just stays stuck on waiting for device..

ps THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR STOPPING IN HERE TO HELP ME!

ok first thing first type out what your hboot tells you and lets see that its rooted as long as s-off shows up you should be. IF you are then we could try to flash Amon RA and see if we can get running from there.

Are you unplugged from the Computer?

Ok, one question.

if you turn the phone off, let it sit for a couple seconds, and then press down and hold power (while still holding vol down). You'll see a white screen appear and run some checks...at the top of the screen, there should be text that either says S-ON or S-OFF. Which does it say for you?

You may be rooted and just might need a recovery. We can get you there soon enough. Just need a little more info.

When you downloaded the revolutionary program, did you also download the USB driver that is provided there? you will need both in order to successfully root your phone. You'll also need that SU file that you mentioned, but you can't flash it without a recovery.

More info...

If you see that you have S-ON, that means you're not there quite yet. I would download the driver on the revolutionary.io site, install it (unless you're on a mac, then disregard). Then run revolutionary again and you should be good.

if you see that you have S-OFF, then congrats! You've turned off your phone's security and your about 3 minutes away from being finished. You'll want to download this file

http://files.androidspin.com/downloads.php?dir=amon_ra/RECOVERY/&file=PC36IMG.zip

Put it on the root of your SD card. This means to put it on the top level directory on your SD card (so don't put it in a folder). After you do this, turn off your phone and let it sit for a couple seconds. Then hold volume down, keep it held down, and press power, all while still holding volume down. You'll see the white screen (this is called the bootloader menu). It will run a check and it should pick up the PC36IMG.zip file you just put on your SD card. Select YES to update. Select NO because you don't want to reboot quite yet. After selecting NO, select RECOVERY.

Once you get there, go ahead and go to backup/restore, nandroid backup, and select all the checkboxes. Then make your first nandroid backup. After it's done backing up, back out to the main recovery menu, and go to WIPE and select CACHE. Let it do its thing, then select DALVIK CACHE. After that's wiped, back out to the main menu again and select FLASH ZIP FROM SD CARD. Then find that SU zip file that you mentioned and flash it. Now back out to the main menu in recovery yet again and reboot your phone...

You are rooted!

Man what a ninja!

lol sorry I got really sleepy last night as it was running late and wasnt too detailed... okay so what happened was I got stuck somehow at the red triangle exclamation screen at the stage described above, what I did to fix it was pull battery, plug usb into cpu, start revolutionary again, then put batt into phone and held power and vol down... it asked if i wanted to download the recovery in revolutionary, said yes, it said completed this time *didnt the first time for some reason?....***... then i did the recovery and got the superuser going and flashed the zip. rebooted and boom... worked like a charm, rooted, superuser, soff, and didnt break any apps...

i appreciate the help of everyone who witnessed my lil freak out moment ...wheeeeeeeeeeeewf! lol.... that can be scary when your alarm clock is not able to work and you gotta get up for work in the morning lol
