I'm still mulling something over here:

Should I commit to a 2-year contract for the Prime to get the subsidized price, or just pay retail and buy it outright? Doing so, I can save my upgrade for next year's big thing. Renewing my contract wipes that upgrade out but I get the phone cheaper in the short run.

What would YOU do?

If you always save your upgrade for the next best thing, with how fast tech moves now, you will never use it.

I'm in the same boat as yourself although I have family members that have upgrades available and I may just use theirs and keep mine for later...yep that's what I'm going to do!

I'd get the subsidized price and use the phone. Sell it in a year and buy the next latest/greatest phone outright or wait for your next upgrade.

Tough to say; it all depends on your finances. My wife would be pissed if I spent $600 on a phone. I can spend $300 on it and maybe only get a frown. :p

I've been wrestling with this also. And since my NE2 isn't officially until 31, Dec as I understand it I will pay an extra $50 for the early upgrade option that's now on my account? If so, it's even more tempting to buy outright and save my NE2 for another day. I'm thinking the Prime will still be worth some good coin a year from release so recouping a fair portion seems feasible.

True that: if Darling Bride ever learned I paid $600 for a PHONE? Uh, non-good things would likely transpire. SO she can keep her Droid for another year, then I use HER upgrade, buy the new shiny and pass my Prime to her :)

Thanks folks!

I have two lines in my family plan and both is eligible for upgrade. I will use one of them to upgrade to Prime with 2 years and keep the other for next year's big one.

Well, I'd just use the upgrade and if something comes out next year that you want, get that at full retail. Luckily for me, my dad has an upgrade 1 year after mine so I just use his and I buy him a new dumb phone at full cost. So when a new phone comes out in a year or so, I'll pick it up at a discounted price as usual. :D

Here's the conversation in my house:
[Me] Hey honey I just spent $600 on the new Prime!
[Darling Husband] You got me one too, right?

It's expensive when both spouses are geeks :)
Trying. Not. To. Buy. Blu-Ray. Star Wars.
We already have all versions since the original VHS releases...

If you're willing to pay full retail now, get the Prime on contract and then if something better comes out then you shouldn't have a problem paying full retail then.

I'm an android fanboi, obviously, but I hope you're wrong. The consumer loses out if you are right.

Consumers won't lose out, don't worry. Apple's inferiority will mean nothing to the iLemmings. It'll still sell like hotcakes, which will maintain competition.

Android will continue to try and get sales by innovating ideas and keeping ahead of the tech curve, while Apple will merely announce that another iPhone was stolen at a bar and then stick a slightly better processor into the same shells.

I guess Droidette and I are the only two wives currently surfing this forum. :p

I don't see why paying out of pocket for the phone makes any sense at all unless you don't want to be locked into a contract and you are contemplating either giving up service altogether or switching carriers. If something else comes out before your next upgrade that you really want, then sell your current device to "subsidize" the new one.

Hubby and I are probably going to upgrade at the same time so yes, any way we go it will be pricey in the short run.

Is anyone else slightly disappointed that this leaked image looks EXACTLY like the Nexus S with a possible shiny aluminum cover (I'm not convinced its metallic yet, looking at pics of the Nexus S with flash can cause it to look metallic and shiny also.

I guess I was just hoping for something that looked different...

Well at least you have a fellow geek to talk to, Droidette!

My Darling Bride's idea of the "perfect" phone is a jitterbug. I tell her about the Prime's specs and I get the deer-in-the-headlights look. Were it not for you guys, I would be a very lonely geek indeed.

LOL Chief...

I get that same look from hubby when I start talking recovery and ROMs and kernels and such. Yes, I am the IT department for our phones. Heck, I'm even running a hybrid on my Curve. :)

Honestly, I really like the look of the Nexus S so I'll be stoked if it turns out to be the same form factor just bigger and better IMHO.

+1 on Star Wars geekdom

+1 on wife's deer-in-the-headlights look. (Although the poor thing does love her iPhone!) :p

I cannot get away from this thread. It is killing productivity. A couple of observations.

1. I am really excited about this phone but Verizon still hasn't announced 4G rollout in my area. It's pretty hard to justify an upgrade to a 4G phone when I don't know when it will be usefull to me.

2. I am bummed about the iphone news. I was going to buy the 5 for my wife, either for christmas or for her birthday in the spring - The android OS is not for her. I assumed anything coming out would be 4G. Maybe we should both hold onto our phones until Verizon has 4G here.

Thank you!

I've just read through the last 5 pages after getting home from work and haven't heard a single disappointed person. IMO, the on screen buttons are UGLY, the bottom bezel is too large and completely pointless if there are on screen buttons, and I'm not a fan of the rounded corner. I'm sure it will look better in an official press shot, but I'm secretly praying this is actually a Nexus S running ICS with the normal physical buttons turned off. Really wanted to get this phone (have been waiting months with my upgrade for something great to come out), but may have to use it on the Vigor or Droid HD

I guess only time will tell...

I'm not too disappointed because being with Verizon since my first smart phone and not being very active on the forums or tech sites until the Bionic/Prime stuff started floating around, I didn't really know what the Nexus S looked like.

I'm kind of tired of the squared off-boring design of the Moto Droid line, so I'm pleased with some curves.

Also, remember that the Droidguy said that what he saw looked like a slightly thicker and taller Nexus S, so it squares up. I'm expecting at least another leaked pic or two before the announcement next week.

7 days to go!!

1. If you don't think it will hit in 2 years, then yes, that's a consideration. But even if it takes another year or so, having a phone with ICS and an HD screen will be awesome!

2. Honestly, if I was an iPhone fan, the iPhone 4S is a pretty nice phone. Doesn't compare to Android 4G phones, but if she's not into Android, iPhone is the way to go. My wife loves it because it's so easy to use and it takes great pictures. And because all of her friends have it.

Me too! My husband doesn't particularly care what phone he has. He doesn't like spending much money and his last upgrade was just around the time the OG came out, which he didn't want to pay for, so he still has an old Samsung Omnia. :( God I hate that thing. He wouldn't want to spend the money on the Prime (more for me mwahaha) but at least in november we'll both have Android phones finally! If I manage to not die waiting for the Prime. :/ I'm too impatient for this.
