***Official Galaxy Nexus Pre-Release speculation thread**

Everybody seems pretty happy to blame Verizon, but as companies, Google and Samsung try to act in their best interest as well. It's possible that Verizon is not entirely to blame here.

I'll ALWAYS blame Verizon for junk like this until they let device manufacturers develop devices for their network 100% independently of VZW's input on the device outside of whether it causes problems when activated on their network by some customer. I think they have a program for such devices now, but as far as I know only one device has got through it and it was some far out china brand or something. They were never really into the idea of peeps selling devices independently of them, but I think with the TV spectrum they use for LTE they were forced by the FCC to atleast attempt to accommodate such things. And Google forced that.

I am almost wondering if some of this fighting goes all the way back to that auction and this being the first fully Google sponsored device on the resulting LTE network from that auction. I can see Google testing them TODAY on what Google had demanded outta that auction back then.

Google wants to get people to use their services so they can collect as much data as possible and then sell it to advertisers.. . . .

Wha??? So you mean that Google isn't the benevolent, antiApple, cookies and ice cream company with only a smile for its customers?

I always pictured Google as a friendly green face in the sky.

It can't be true that Google is only out for money. It can't!

Meh, all the carriers suck in one way or another. I just wish there was one I could feel good about switching to that had a nice selection of phones. Is that too much to ask?

Could the problem be from the Galaxy Nexus being announced the same time as the Droid RAZR on October 18th.

Verizon can be upset that the Samsung's marketing will interfere with Verizon's campaign. It doesn't make sense from a business perspective to release two flag ship devices at the same time at different events. The coverage of the Nexus Galaxy can drown out the coverage of the RAZR.

I think this is most likely the explanation for VZW anxiety.

Although I do have another theory I would like to put up for scrutiny: what if Verizon's exclusivity for the Ganexy(yeah, that's what I'm going with) was vague or unclear, and the GSM version is coming out without violating the exclusivity agreement?

carriers just like any other business are out to make the most money they possibly can :-) You just have to find the one with the least issues for your particular needs

As much as I love the idea of Nexus on Verizon, I couldn't bring myself to pay full price for it. No way.

Uh Oh. I hope this isn't the "complication" that Steven is referring to. :(

Unsubsidized Nexus, anyone?

Anyone who is worried about unsubsidized prices.... DON'T WORRY! Why? check out this scheme. If the Galaxy Nexus comes out unsubsidized, just use your upgrade to get a subsidized iPhone 4S. Everyone knows how ******ed Apple users are. You can sell it on ebay for probably more than the full retail price of the damn thing is. Take your profit, and apply towards Galaxy Nexus off contract. Wala..... subsidized Galaxy Nexus. This is what I might even do if they want 299 or more for a subsidized galaxy nexus. Will have to do the math to see which comes out cheaper.

Just out of curiosity, if this is going to be your first Android, what are you coming from?

I have a Samsung Rogue with a cracked screen, the "a" button rarely works on the slide out Qwerty, and the battery only lasts for a day with minimal usage (since the screen is cracked). I loved it when I first got it, but my ex wife threw it across the room one night while she was drunk, and it's never been the same since. :(

Sometimes? The last Verizon store I went into to talk about reception issues the rep suggested that a Task Killer might help.

I hear a lot of horror stories about VZW employees, but the ones at the store near me have always been great. They even managed to get my wife's Bionic on an unlimited data plan when she didn't have a data plan on her feature phone that was being traded in. I wasn't expecting that, so it was pure class.

This really reminds me of the Droid Incredible days. What Verizon would never release 2 flag ship phones so close together! Seemed that was every other post.

Hmm. Interesting theory. I suppose that the contract for Verizon's GalNexosaurus could have had an exclusivity for CDMA-versions only. But that would mean that Verizon is employing some pretty stupid lawyers.

I happen to be a prosecuting attorney and have seen a large number of total idiots walking around with a law degree, but that would take the cake.

And yeah, that's what I'm going with. GalNexosaurus.

IMO, vzw will never give up their control. Doing so would make them irrelevant...as someone said earlier, just a dumb pipe. They will continue to pressure manufacturers to let them Verizon-ize their phones under the guise of "value-add" so they can keep a foothold in the market. They have to make everyone think that vzw can do it better than anyone else with their valuable services so that manufacturers don't just throw out devices to everyone. It's about market differentiation. I'd do the same thing in their position. I don't like it, but it makes business sense.

Several years back I worked for a consulting company that did some work for Verizon, mostly centered on software development of their project management tools. After seeing some of the crap they were using at the time, I can tell you that idiocy pervades to a lot of corporate America ;)

Oh, and I heartily approve of GalNexosaurus.

it would be really nice if it were coming out for all carriers at launch i just dont see it happening at least here in the united states since samsung released an version of the galaxy s2 on every other carrier except vzw

That is the same logic that is causing Netflix and BoA to scramble. VZW will have a significant loss of market share very soon if they don't find a way to positively spin the release *three* uberdevices coming in the next weeks (Galaxonexosaurus, Vigor, RAZR)

And thanks Han for the awesome nomenclature!

I love the speculation as to why Verizon is pitching a fit about this. I know back in the original days of the Prime forum, I had posted a little conversation about why a Nexus phone on Verizon was such a stretch. I think it is fair to revisit.

I know its wishful thinking but if they do it for apple shouldnt they do it for android too :-)

So, it looks like next week will truly be an eventful week with the announcement of the Razr (spyder), probably the Vigor, and the Galaxy Nexus. Then we can all make informed decisions on which device is for us. Pretty excited to be honest...when was the last time you can remember Verizon releasing 3 top of the line phones within weeks of each other.

Google: "We would love for Verizon to carry the next Nexus Phone."
Verizon: "So would we."
Google: "Well what do we need to do to make it happen."
Verizon: "These apps are required to be preloaded, un-removable, and always run in the background." (Huge List of Bloatware)
Google: "Wait, I don't think you understand what the Nexus line is, let me expl..."
Verizon: "Also, we will review all updates prior to going out to consumers."
Google: "Well Nexus phones by definition get the latest and greatest first."
Verizon: "Well we will be the final word on that. Oh, there is also one more thing."
Google: "What is it?"
Verizon: "Since it is a "Nexus", and not a "Droid", we are going to need you to make Bing the default browser."
