Guys, I love the car talk, but. . . if you can talk about that, then I want to talk about horses!

This is one my dad's Arabian mares. Her name is Buttercup (from Princess Bride). She's very spirited, runs great. And I love her.

I leave this thread for a day... and this is what I come back to find... I guess there was no new info today?

So skimming through the last few days of posts i have a question.

I take it Early is going to the event? in Hong Kong?

Talk about 2 ends of the spectrum! NJ02vette's supercharged ride has 620HP and Buttercup has... well, 1HP :p

I have already put my kids on notice that, Tuesday night at 9:15 PM, I am commandeering the office PC with its 22" monitor for the big show out of Hong Kong. No facebook, no BG, no MLPs for my Bronie son. All ICS and Nexus.

Just 2 days to go!

We were talking about horses. 620 of em to be precise. :D

Beautiful by the way. Princess Bride quotes never get old.

For what it's worth, if I ever commit a felony in Chi town, I want to be prosecuted by you.

Hope Tuesday night blows me away. Don't want to deal with any more delays.

As I mentioned earlier, my 80 year old mom came to visit last summer. I handed her my Evo, showed her how to swipe screens and where the app drawer was. After three minutes, while navigating Radar Now, she asked why my sister got that hard to use piece of crap (her words) iPhone 4.

This whole "intuitive, better for geriatric crowd" meme has undying popularity, but I think it does injustice to a LARGE class of clueful oldsters.

Lazy thinking transcends generations, the iPhone isn't more intuitive, in my opinion, that's a popular excuse.

Try it yourself on an 80+ year old and see for yourself.

I wish I could personally destroy this false meme.

Not just 80 year olds. When iPods were the dominant force of the MP3 world and my wife wanted one, we picked it up (30GB classic) at the Apple store. After all the press, I was expecting something that would blow me away. From menus that you had to completely back out of to get to other menus, to the difficulty of using the scroll wheel, and the most annoying thing, how the heck did you power it down? Had to look it up, and I'm supposed to be a techie.

Flash forward, I was playing with a friends iPod Touch. I turned it on, and couldn't figure out how to turn it off. No thanks.

I've always described how I feel about Apple and Android this way: Apple is great if you're not all that familiar with smartphones or computers in general, but want something that looks nice and is intuitive enough that you don't need to take the time to figure out how all the software works. It's like a smartphone with training wheels. Android, on the other hand, allows a LOT of customization and tinkering but makes some real sacrifices on ease of use, leading for a steeper learning curve for newbies. If you're familiar with computers or smartphones at all this probably won't be an issue, but for some it can be overly intimidating and confusing.

Put another way: If your 85 year old nan asked you to help her pick out a new smartphone to move away from the nokia brick she knows and loves, would you instinctively reach for a Droid or an iPhone? Personally, I'd be getting her the iPhone, knowing that she'll be able to pick it up quickly and use it fairly efficiently with little to no effort. Buy her a Droid though, and I'm probably going to have to spend some time showing her the ropes, teaching her the basics and then standing by as tech support when new issues pop up.

It doesn't make one better than the other, it just means they're good at different things.

Can't say I agree with this. It's the kind of generic, opinionated statement with no factual basis that has been circulating for years. PC vs. Mac and Android vs. iOS. I prefer to perform some tasks in a Windows environment and some in a Mac environment. I don't consider one to be easier than the the other. Again, it's what works best for you.

Totally agree. I have seen some people in the geriatric population who are very tech savvy and I've seen some people in there 20's and 30's that can't learn how to use Powerpoint. It has nothing to do with age.

I had to edit my post. It's closer to 620hp. Hit the 5 instead of 2. Darn num pad.

Mercy! What are you feeding her? I'll stick with my truck. I Love Forced Induction.

Enh. I don't think it's false. I can understand that with all things subjective, your personal mileage may vary but in general I think it sticks around because there's at least a grain of truth in it.

I had to help a non-tech saavy friend pick out a phone recently. (She was coming from an older blackberry and that was the extent of her exposure to smartphones.) For her, after she'd had some hands on time with both it was a no brainer to go with Apple. She automatically knew how to find and navigate to what she wanted, while using a droid however, she had to frequently ask me for directions and tips.

So, clearly, two similar stories with two completely divergent outcomes. Not saying your opinion is any less valid, given your experiences it may not (or appears to not) hold any water with you at all. That's ok. In the end, both devices do the same things (access the web, make calls, and take pics) it's HOW they do it that's different. I make my recommendations to friends and family based on my criteria and you on yours.

Sorry, I wasn't trying to imply old people are dumber or know less in any way. I was using my clueless nana as an example of someone (possibly one of those in their 20's and 30's who suck at powerpoint) who isn't very good with technology in general, and computers specifically.

i may be in the minority but i always thought that zunes were nicer then the old school ipods.

I remember a long time ago, that one of the features of ICS was that Google wasn't going to allow themed versions (eg, Sense, TouchWiz, Blur, etc).

Obviously I don't think that's the case now, but does anyone else remember this or have some more info. And could this possibly be the reason why some are saying there are going to be more vanilla ICS devices in the future?

Google has said an lot of things, but tbh i wont believe it till i see it. There was some alliance made up of htc moto samsung and goolge that was supposed to get updates to phones in an more timely manner. My captivate would still be running froyo if i hadnt rooted it an put cm 7.1 on it. Samsung hasnt released any updates for my phone since January I think....

You mean you didn't read all 9k+ posts before posting? How dare you!

:D:D:D:D

I actually don't know much (code for not knowing anything) about the Aussie carriers, and just hoped you would be pointed in the right direction. So, I am glad to know I at least helped answer a question you had.

lol i have actually been folowing since page 50 but the prime posting time is normally when i am asleep so i when i read it i remember the page number i was up to some times i just continue from the next page probably missed it :(

I dont recall that per se, but that means nothing.

Just chiming in that Google frequently reverses themselves. I saw the Andy Rubin interview on video, just prior to launch, assuring all that Honeycomb would be on phones. And repeating it during questioning.

My point is that we'll know when we know what the final decision is.

The blogosphere was convinced that Gingerbread would spell death for vendor customizations and we know how that turned out.

Not in the minority at all. Ok, probably are since the zunes were cancelled.:D

But I'll agree, that the ZuneHD is far and away the best MP3 player I've ever owned. Wife used it a few times and comments on how much better it is than her current iPod.

I have to say that my favorite things about this thread have been the knock down battles over the CPU and the screen. Those were some serious geek wars. It was like "Bring it on" or "You've been Served" except with geeks and tech instead of dancing. Good times.

I miss them too, but those have mostly been removed into separate threads. One good effect (other than we'll no longer bore/annoy viewers who aren't interested in those topics) is that they'll persist after the official launch of Nexus, at which point this thread will be locked.

I agree. It's not disrespectful to older folks to point out that most of us lose our ability to focus and learn new technologies in our later years. Of course there are exceptions, and it's easy to find examples of people sharp as a tack into their 90's or beyond, but they're not typical.

But the debate isn't really about age, it's about tech savviness regardless of age, and as they say: 50% of everybody is below the median average.

Also, there's one easy argument to make: Apple forbids apps that compete with their own from being offered in the Apple Store. Therefore by definition a user will only ever need to learn one app of a given type that Apple offers, since there can be no others. :(

I will give apple credit for one thing they know how to market things. TO this day i still believe tablets really arent necessary but apple convinced the world that they were necessary.

Damn data connectivity. My tbolt never gives me 4g even though I'm in the coverage map...prime better have an excellent connection...all these phones with 4g problems....as far as I'm concerned screw the 4g if you're gonna release phones that sometimes get it and sometimes don't
