Root Please recommend me a kernel...

I have an EVO 4G, running MikG 2.56. That is the only mod. I want to overclock it a bit and extend my battery life. Hope that doesnt sound dumb. I am new to this rooting world and am completly tech stupid. A co-worker rooted my phone and showed me how to install Roms. I just downloaded Chop Suey kernel to my SD card, but I have no idea how good/bad it is, or how to install it without messing my phone up. Any help is MUCH appreciated!!

well, Chop suey is a good place to start. It is a sense kernel and you have a sense rom.

some kernels work better on some phones than others. You might end up trying other ones too.

do you know how to make a nand backup of your present rom/configuration?

Do you know how to flash the kernel?

None of the above. :o

Personally, I've had the best experiences with either More or Agressive Freedom kernels. You will want to download the Universal version of the kernel and put it on the root of the SD card.

To flash a kernel:

Wipe Dalvik Cache
Wipe Cache
(repeat 3 above times)
Flash kernel

If you plan on over or underclocking you will need to buy and install setCPU

whats the difference between the kernels? and does the kernel have its own settings or need to use SetCPU?

As far as the freedom series, the different kernels represent different levels of undervolting. Basically the more you undervolt the more battery life you get, since your using less power. However, some phones can't handle a lot of undervolting which is the leason for the "aggressive" "more" and "less" designation. Check the thread on xda by lithid for more information

You will need setCPU to change any sort of kernal settings.

I'm on Xplod (AOSP) so cant use it just wanted to know the difference. If I go back to Sense then I will check it out.

Thank you everyone for the help, especially dust! I flashed Chop Suey to my phone and it let me overclock it. It seems to be running great, but not faster. I ran quadrant standard before and after, and it actualky slowed down from 945 to 856. I am confused.

Quadrant scores are great and all, but what actually matters is how the phone works. After all, its a phone. As long as it is fast and responsive quadrant scores don't mean a thing.

Also, Kernels need some time to "settle in". Give them a day or so and if you still dont like the performance you are getting try a different one.

Finally, what setCPU settings are you using?

Glad you got you some edumakashun and flashed you a kernel! The rom and kernel sticky has links to more kernels. Sense kernels for sense roms, aosp kernels for aosp roms.

true, it is phone, how well does it work and respond? What kind of battery life do you need? It can be kind of a trade off.

Too, regarding these scores, here is an interesting post that talks about that a little.

I wouldn't worry about quad or linpac scores. They really don't mean anything. Read this comment from a very talented and respected developer, aamikam (creator of MikG, Mik3D etc.)

Your max seems to be fine, but you could really lower your min. The vast majority of the time (>90%) my phone is below that. You should be fine setting it at 245 or below. just remember to test it out before hitting set on boot.

Also, use the smartass scaling if it is available for chopsuey.

Example:

My CPU levels by % (taken yesterday)

It might have the interactive governor if it doesn't have the smart ass one.

I think if you have either one they automatically provide a 'screen off' profile, don't they, RX?

The thing about that is, when your phone is inactive, with the screen off, it underclocks you and saves your battery.

I think they are both pretty good at ramping up when you need them too.

Another handy app is Juice defender. it sort of cycles your radios on and off to conserve battery, as well. The balanced setting is good.

I believe they do, but I always set my own at 422.

I don't know where the default one is and I assume mine would override it.

Also, I set an in call profile around 700 or so. I had problems with dropped calls without it, I assume because the screen shuts itself off during a call when the screen is not in use.

I dropped it down. No smartass scaling... only Conservative, Ondemand, Userspace, Powersave, Interactivex, and Performance.

Could be a number of things. Most rooted ROMS display your true signal, whereas before the stock phone wouldnt tell you whether you were in true 3G or 1x coverage.

I just realized my phone is stuck in 1X and wont go into 3G.

correct most roms now show what you are truly getting. with the stock the rom, it will only show that you have a signal. it does not distinguish what kind of signal you are getting. before it was only aosp roms that had this feature but now the devs have added it to sense roms now.
