Gorilla Glass

I have had many phone in the last few years and the only one I put a scratch on was a Samsung Glyde which had a resistive touchscreen anyway. I have had Iphones, HTC, Samsung, and Motorola Android phones and never scratched any of them.

The reason the iphone shattered is because its made out of metal and glass. When it hits the ground its not going to take as well as plastic and glass hitting the ground. Some people don't like how Samsung uses plastic but it is for a reason. Plastic is going to absorb the shock of a fall better then a metal body. Lets say you took a Thunderbolt and did the test against the Iphone. They both would have shattered. HTC phones seem to have very high screen shatter rates even though they are all using gorilla glass.

It would have been nice to see it included on the Galaxy Nexus but its not going to stop me from buying it.

Holy crap the Glyde. I had one of those. What a piece of trash.

I know the Dinc 1 didn't have GG, not sure about the Dinc 2

Yes, the Incredible does have Gorilla Glass.

CORNING

A couple of points from my non-tech savvy brain...
First, we're all talking screen protectors and whatnot, but one thing that really helps prevent breakage in a drop is a case. If you don't buy a case for a phone like this, you're playing Russian roulette. I realize this is annoying if you plan on getting a dock of some sort...I never got a case for my OG Droid for this reason, which I have dropped at least a couple times with (luckily) no damage.
Second, the fact that this phone is, IMHO, more curved than any other phone I would think makes it much more prone to hitting the floor/concrete in such a manner that would produce the most focused stress/shock on the screen...so what I'm saying is, I'm betting that the nexus is much more prone to breakage if it's dropped than other phones.

Yeah, iPhone4 shatters on dropping because of the way it's constructed with metal and glass and not absorbing impacts well, not just because it's not gorilla glass. For the same reason, I'm more worried about Razr than Nexus for dropping as it's constructed similarly.

This issue is really blown out of proportion. I'm pretty sure it's some kind of high quality glass on Nexus with equivalent strength as gorilla glass.

I would think the RAZR would be the most durable because it is light weight with a Kevlar case and Gorilla Glass.

Maybe. But Kevlar case is mostly on the back surface, so I'm not sure if that will help much when it's dropping with face down. Nexus is fairly light too and its curved screen helps protect screen when dropped. I think both Nexus and Razr will be similar in dropping test.

Maybe the kevlar will help if it's in your shirt pocket and someone shoots you and happens to hit the back of the phone..........lol (that's a big maybe though) and if the bullet happens to go through the kevlar and hit the back side of the GG it won't scratch or shatter :p;):D

Neither the iPhone 4 or 4s use Gorilla Glass. Apple buys glass from "Lens Technology" and "Fuji Crystal," not Corning. Apple's glass certainly doesn't stand up to the kind of abuse Gorilla Glass does, as you saw in that video.

Was the iPhone change recent?

Added:

As far as Sammy not having GG for the Nexus, maybe that was the trade-off for the more expensive 4460? I would chose the 4460 over something I will cover with a display shield anyway ;) No sd card slot, no sale for me though :(

It would have been nice to have GG, and an SD slot! But the phone wasn't really developed for serious mainstream people, more towards the developers community IMO.

With that said....this IMO has really turned out to be a phone that one would buy mostly for the software side of things...

Which is cool...Diff strokes for Diff Folks.

Let's not jump on conclusion just yet. We don't know what glass is on Nexus. Maybe it could be even better one than GG, who knows? GG is not the only and best glass in the word, but it's hyped due to Corning marketing.

True that ....we shall see!

I think this was the intention from the beginning.

Much like the Razr you buy if your main objective is build quality and you don't care about locked/encrypted bootloaders, and in this case non-removable batteries, which is a major negative in my opinion.

I know I know...but a little extra on the Build Quality wouldn't have broken the bank with Google...just my 2 cents! Either way its been a very hyped phone, and I still want to put it through its paces to give ICS a whirl....

I'm just giving you a hard time ;)

Extra build quality doesn't hurt, but on the same token I don't think the build quality will be bad on the GNex (Good), maybe not as good as the Razr (Excellent), but not bad either.

No doubt about the hyping, every phone it seems like gets all hyped up and then people are let down tremendously when the phone is released (no one to blame but themselves for that ;))

Lol...I know,,,,All Cool ;)

As of now, I'm realllllllllly on the fence about which phone to get! Some serious hands on is going to be in order, no impulse buy on either device as fas as I'm concerned.

Especially after the 2 Videos I just posted in the Razr Forums about it's camera....All I have to say is the Camera looks to be extremely Suspect!

Well I hope Janel is right and their glass is equivalent (or better) than GG.

I can try to be careful but 100% chance I am dropping this thing at least once in the first few months.

That sugru looks pretty nifty might have to look into that..!

I'm sure I'm not saying anything new here, but Moto cameras have always left more than a little to be desired (actually quite a bit more than a little) :p

Watch the drop test between the Samsung Galaxy S2 vs the iphone 4s...and then tell me if you'd rather spend $600 on a phone that doesn't have it, vs a phone that does have it. ; )

Has nothing to do with the type of glass. It's the construction of the phones themselves. The iPhone's screen and back glass edges are 100% exposed. No framework around the glass. If you put even a thin rubber bumper around the edge the glass would not shatter nearly as easy.

Yea they deserve no more passes at this point. If the camera on the Razr is no better then the Bionic they deserve to get some serious Twitter Bombing...lol

I saw the videos you posted on Razr forum. Still it's hard to tell just from those. But I'm not expecting too much improvement from Bionic given that it's coming only two months after that. Moto never got camera good enough. Samsung probably leverages their camera division in electronics so theirs are pretty good. But still HTC manages to get much better cameras in their phones than Moto. Moto really needs to get their acts together on phone cams.

Well the cam in the Bionic is pretty good, however the Auto Focus straight out suxx and takes a week to focus in on pics...
