Help New to android, is the Nexus for me?

Noiz

Newbie
Hey, im new to android after 3 years of iPhone.

I Have decided to go for a android based phone this year, but im not quite sure what to go for.

My first choice atm is the Galaxy Nexus, but i got some questions.

1: Do you think that the display being HD will affect the speed of the phone?
2: How do u think the phone will preform in games with this high res?
3: 1gb ram, wont that take alot of battery?
4: Do you think it will be the fastest android on the market when it comes, or would SGS II be faster cause of lower res?

I really want the best of the best, so i guess its either this or the new motorola?

I like to mess around with the phone, and i saw someone being able to install backtrack using sd-card, does alot of tweaks need SD cards??

Im looking forward to my time on the forum.

Thanks.

1. Nope
2. Fine
3. I don't think RAM has any impact on battery
4. Yes.

Are u sure about the ram, i think i heard something about the iPhone only having 512 because of the battery.

And that you could not turn the ram of when it was in Sleep mode.

EDIT: im sorry for coming here as the android noob and question you, but i always check everything 100 times when i buy new tv/phones/ PC components :)

Yeah... I'm not a computer scientist or anything but I'm sure 512 vs 1gb of RAM will not in any way impact the battery life. The screen and 4G radio will be the biggest hits on the battery.

Unless if you want to mess around with development or rooting (read: jail breaking) your phone, you might want to consider something like the Droid RAZR. This Galaxy Nexus is really a developer's phone, and the Droid RAZR is said to get Android 4.0 early 2012.

That's just my two cents.

Yeah, those are the real reasons I even got interested in the RAZR to begin with. I've never rooted a phone and don't plan on it. But then again, I just like the things I hear about the Nexus , period .

Memory and quality of the camera is the biggest IMO between the 2.

I guess I'm missing why rooting or being a developer is a requirement.

Oh, you didn't get the memo? It was handed out yesterday.. very clearly, at the bottom, you can read where it says, "Phone user must be a developer and/or user who will root their phone, otherwise, you are forbidden from purchasing.... FORBIDDEN!"

The warning was very clear. Heed the warning! For all that do not will be severely punished! :o

If your even interested in the Razr, go to the store right now and play with the Bionic. Its basically the exact same phone in a smaller package. If you dont like the way Moto does things then the Nexus might be for you.

And the developer only argument doesn't hold any truth to it anymore. The Nexus One was a developer phone but not exclusively only a dev phone. And every generation we get away from the N1 the Nexus is taking a step away from that.

Woah! Didn't mean to offend anyone. I personally think the Droid RAZR will have better build quality. I have not seen either phone in person so I could be wrong.
Like I said in a post earlier, the OP may want to consider the Droid RAZR, or even HTC Rezound.

One thing I can say, Droid RAZR is hands down better for enterprise than the Galaxy Nexus.

Actually developer or not, into rooting or not, doesn't matter. My wife knows absolutely nothing about technology and won't even let me root her phone for her, but she loves her Nexus S. The Nexus line is just the best phones you can buy because Google doesn't let OEMs or Carriers add crap to Android that ruin it.

Guess I missed the notice about the Galaxy Nexus also

Build quality will be great. The Nexus S build quality was very good, and the Galaxy S2 build quality is great. The Galaxy Nexus is going to be even better. Moto does generally build great hardware, but this argument has pretty much gone away with Samsung building much better hardware recently, plus Samsung definitely makes the best screens.

Just a question, but do you really think most people buying these phones will be buying them for enterprise use?

I don't think so.

I don't think so.

I have come to find that enterprise level corporations are more into iPhones than Android as per my wife working for a Fortune 100 Corporation. So I would have to agree.

I almost forgot...

The Nexus phone being just for developers, etc is just as ridiculous sounding as Android phones are only for the tech savvy. It is a combination of laughter and frustration every time I hear people say either of those two things.

What I said was purely a joke. Android is for everyone.. I laugh too.

I feel the same way too; that's an argument apple fanboys use to try and dissuade people from buying Android phones.

Totally untrue. Maybe it has the same CPU, but Motorola seems to have changed quite a few things from Bionic to Razr. Does Bionic have Smart Actions for example?

I am only trying to bring up the point of enterprise to let people know. Some companies are allowing you to bring your own phone for work, as long as it is on the approved list. RAZR has encryption and remote wipe integrated. If you don't care about that, then don't worry about what I said. Just something to think about in deciding a phone.

Just because the Galaxy Nexus is the latest and greatest from Google doesn't mean it's best for everyone. I still think more developers will get this phone than other phones and development will be better on it than other phones. Not saying you have to be a developer to buy or use it.

I am personally getting the Galaxy Nexus so I hope people didn't take me as saying the RAZR is hands down better. With that, I'll stop feeding this back and forth on this thread.

I will be getting one of the 3 phones released: Razr, Nexus, or Rezound. I will root and ROM which ever I get most likely. It is going to come down to how durable the phone is, what the screen looks at to my eyes (everyone sees differently and it is a purely subjective test).

Will the HD screen slow the phone down? Quite possibly. There is no one in their right mind that would say the GPU can perform equally as well between the Razr qHD screen and the SAMOLED HD screen. It will take far more GPU power for equal results. The GPU has to manage almost 2x the number of pixels. Now, if the GPU has more than enough horsepower to power the HD, then it should perform similarly. However, I doubt the GPU is that extreme.

I'd also wait and check out the upcoming HTC Rezound. Some people really like Sense and this phone looks to be great with a 720p screen as well. If you can wait less then a month, you'll have your pick of the cream of the crop of android devices, and be able to walk into a store and see which suits you best. Right now all of us are speaking in theoreticals which have more to do with specs than actual user experience.

I'm also debating my next phone now that Verizon has announced 4G here. Coming from the Droid X I have the following thoughts and concerns. Keeping in mind that I haven't rooted, but I may:

1. I have always liked Motorola's build quality. I have no experience with Samsung. Someone convince either way as to how Samsung stacks up.

2. I don't like what Moto has done with Blur. I use GoLauncher. Is this slowing down my phone and will I like the stock vanilla ics ui? If I have to replace the launcher anyway, then it's a wash between Razr and GalNex(door).

3. I hate the laggy Droid X camera. The promise of a no lag camera has my attention. Will the Razr be close enough to lag free to make this a non-issue? This is actually pretty important to me. I currently dread using my camera.

4. But maybe the biggest issue - Since this is a vanilla dev focussed phone, will it get updated more often than others? I want the newest updates NOW.

Thoughts?

Lets try to help the newbie rather trying to confuse him. And me! What's this about Nexus not being an enterprise phone? Not that I use it (because I don't want to be typing in passwords everytime I wake the phone up) but I don't see the connection. Why would a company not allow the Nexus to access your enterprise accounts?

I'm only going to comment on 2 of these right now because I need to go to work.

Samsung build quality is excellent. I love my Nexus S and the Galaxy S2 is even better. Do not worry about build quality.

Also stop listening to people that say this is a dev focused phone. It is not. It is just Google putting their software on a phone the way it is supposed to be without overlay UIs bogging down the system. This is a great phone for everyone.
