I'm so badly wondering what pricing will be. I don't want to pay full retail for the phone if it's over $600 but I'm in a tough spot. I've used maybe 10 months or 11 months of the 24 year contract I got on the Droid X. So with the $350 ETF, I'll have to pay at least $250 to break that. Pay $299 for the two-year on the SGN.. then $35 activation (heard sometimes it can be waived).

$250
$299
$35
------
$584 + tax to switch over

Does anyone know what happens with the data plan? My brother and me split a family plan because he gets a bill discount for being a federal employee. We both have unlimited data plans.. and I'm assuming that his account is grandfathered in to always have unlimited data plans but maybe it isn't. Hoping I don't get stuck with a 2GB data plan for $30. :\

If you cancel, you can guarantee you will lose your unlimited. You would be better off talking your brother into adding another line, getting the discounted price, then switching the new phone to your line, and putting a dumb phone on the new line (and cancel the data plan on the new line).
$299 up front, plus $10 for 24 months equals $549 (or less, since if he gets a discount, the monthly $10 will be discounted too). Not a lot cheaper, but you get to keep unlimited.

P.S. This is what I am doing to get mine.

You know, seeing the RAZR is discounted to $249 online (at least for me), I hope the GNex is the same. Would be nice to get for $50 less.

The same thing happen to me when I bought the TB, as long as I signed into my vz account. But if u call telesales (vz cs) its $299.00 I explained to the CSR that when I signed in it was $249, she didn't know why either. But she said if you can get $50 off then order through your account online!!

From what I understand it's only the single plan that is grandfathered in. Any new phones/lines on that plan will not be eligible.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

A few weeks ago my wife upgraded from a dumb phone to a smart phone, and she got grandfathered in with an unlimited data plan.

It could have just been the VZW sales rep being nice though, so YMMV.

I was also eligible for the discount in-store. So weird that telesales wouldn't see it, unless that particular time it was an online only special...

You are right. I should have read his post more carefully.

I might have to do this, but what if I had wanted to/intended on switching my phone number? I've heard this can be had without canceling the line of service.

I'm on my 3rd thunderbolt. Usually after 3 of the same phone with problems they let you choose another one right? Think they'd let me choose the Nexus?

Check your account online. You are probably getting a loyalty discount.

That could be true, but not sure. I believe if this was the case, CSR for VZ would have knowledge of this discount. But when I spoke with VZ she did not believe me and asked me to send her a email with the link showing I was getting the $50 off. But when I sent her the link it would show the price for $299 not 249. The link couldn't show her my logged in account.

I haven't done that in a while, but if its the same price point, then it should work. I switched from a Treo 650 to a Pocket PC forever ago after my Treo spontaneous bricked on me.

Couple weeks could have been right before the 9/7 cut-off date? (I know I added my 2nd line on 9/7 for the unlimited)

Now I know we have varying opinions on CSR for VZ BUT I think (think being the key word here) that we can agree that it truly depends on the CSR. Some are much much better than others and some you get off the phone wondering how they even managed to answer the phone without hurting themselves.

so verizon got rid of one year contracts, NE2, and unlimited data.

that sucks!! at least i am grandfathered in for unlimited data

+1 - me too.
And I have 1 NE2 left. So either I go with my early upgrade when this baby comes out and get it for the $249 or wait until February (not bloody likely) and get it for $199.
My track record on patience does not indicate a strong likelihood for option 2

Yeah, being a loyal (read: stuck due to coverage) customer on Verizon, it has not been a good year. I was attached to my early upgrade every year.

Thought I would correct this before people try this and get stuck with a data plan on an extra line they can't cancel. VZW requires you to sign a two year contract for both the line AND the data plan attached to it, meaning putting a dumb phone on thats line won't get you out of the data plan.

Something I saw in the comments I thought was interesting: Did you know that Sammy/Corning have a joint venture together? How much you want to bet this is where the glass comes from? http://www.scp.samsung.com/company/coringcompany.asp

Maybe they just don't want to pay for using the G Glass brand name, but it is in all other ways exactly the same.

When I was researching my plazma tv a few years ago I found out Samsung was in the glass/display business big time.

I don't believe that is true. Only the contract on the line is for 2 years. You should be able to switch between a smartphone and dumbphone online and not pay a smartphone data plan on a dumbphone.

It's like the hotspot plans that are pro-rated if you only use a week's worth.

Nope, just looked it up and it was on 9/14. However, it wasn't a new line, it was an upgrade to an existing line.

That is what I want to do, I want to renew our contract and also upgrade my wife from a dumb phone to a smartphone...I hope this is what I can do and still keep unlimited data for my line and have her line be unlimited as well.

I am sorry, but this is not true. I just did this to get my wife's phone. The data plan is a feature, not a part of the service. You can add/remove features to your hearts desire, as long as the phone on the line doesn't require it. So by switching a dumbphone to that line, you are removing the requirement for the data plan, and can remove it without affecting your contract.
