***Official Galaxy Nexus Pre-Release speculation thread**

Well said. This is why I'll wait as long as it takes (to a reasonable degree) for the SGN, and why I don't understand the allure of the RAZR or Re-crappy.

Well for me the allure of RAZR is the Moto build quality, micro SD storage and the assurance of awesome accessories. The HTC device won't even be a consideration for me.

The battery differences between GNex and RAZR will be the tipping point for me. I don't root and rom so that's a wash. It's going to take REMARKABLE battery life in the RAZR to sway me from optimized ICS in GNex me thinks.

Is it November 17th yet? At least November begins this Tuesday!

To say that a custom UI defeats the heart and soul of Android or ICS? What a bunch of baloney. Seriously? You can easily kill blur out of the majority of mainline Moto phones, same with TW. The UI is just that--an add on, not an OS.

This is article is a classic example of "I don't have anything new or useful to blog about".

What is even funnier? Now that ICS is incorporating the Blur/TW features, it's OK. But if Moto makes a scrollable, resizable widget, it's BLASPHEMY!!

I think the article was meant to describe the experience of the average user. It is most definitely NOT easy for the average user to "kill blur" or TW.

The UI is an add on, you're right about that, but not in the insignificant way that you're implying. It's like having a simple, exquisite blueberry pie (pure Android) and dumping 4 pounds of dog excrement you've been saving up from the last week's dog walks. It's such a huge pile of crap that the pure Android experience is lost. To me, it's disgusting and isn't true Android.

I would challenge you to conduct a poll on what people prefer: Stock, Vanilla ICS or MotoBlur with all of it's scrollable, resizable widget glory, but I don't think it's even worth the effort. We both know what the overwhelming majority would say.

The headline of this thread reads (Verizon's Release Date 11/17!)

Where did this info come from? Everything I have seen points to a 11/10 launch (which I do not believe) but I'm just curious where the 11/17 date came from? Is this based on the fact that its confirmed for UK 11/17?

Welp, we're still out of power. I left the house this morning to find out that the rest of our area all has power, but us. :p Someone said we were supposed to get it back by 1 PM eastern, which is in about a half hour. I'm at Best Buy looking at computers, now. Anyhooo... there you go...

Yes, our source in Verizon told me 11/7 via PM. I dont have time to catch up on everything. Hopefully will do so when we get power back on.

Cheers,

Steven

11/7 or 11/17 ? Steven, I'm confused now ;)

Was that supposed to be "11/7," or did you mean 11/17 like the rumors are pointing towards?

Blur/TW/Sense are all more than just UI enhancements. They do a lot of work on the backend. You can ditch the launcher and widgets but blur will still be doing it's thing behind the scenes.

Keep warm, Steven!

Han, only a true blueberry aficionado would refer to a pie as "exquisite". Great, now I'm stuck craving pie as well as Gnex. :P

Can't speak for Steven, but based on what he's posted from The Source peviously, assume 11/17. 11/7 has never been mentioned.

Hopefully you have power restored by the time you get home, Steven...and you have gas heating :-)

Here's a mildly interesting article:

I kind of wish google would tell the OEM's that if they want to add their custom UI's to make it a market app and that way people can install it if they want, or even make an option to run stock or the custom UI without having to root and everything. Most would leave the UI on but those of us on sites like this would be able to run stock and be happy.

I have evolved in deciding to wait for you guys to receive and report on all the fun.
At the same time seeing what Costco has to offer in a deal. They may not get it as soon as others, we will see.

I'm sure a lot are going to do the same. I know I'm not gonna buy any new phone until trying them out in store and reading all the in hand reviews.

The Droid V1 was my first smart phone and that has me concerned that the Razr will become a POS in a little over a year after release. (both being from Motorola) unless all of these go that route... Definitely getting something by years end though....

And here comes the "Yeah, but..."

What do you consider an "average user"? The 70,000 people who even bother to go onto this or other forums? Or the small subset of the 70,000 who bother to root or get their panities knotted over the UI?

Or the MILLIONS who use the Android phones are just happy? This article is Pre Droid X, pre FroYo. And yet somehow, the vast bulk of android users just aren't as bent out of shape over this.

Someone said a few thousand posts back something to the effect "I don't care how this phone sells as long as I get mine". Newsflash, Google, Verizon, Samsung aren't charities. Everyone here better care how the GNex sells, because if it tanks, that will not be good for anyone in the Android community.

And since, numerically, the all the angst in this thread equals less than 1 day's sale of smartphones on any carrier, we DO need to worry about the unwashed masses of users who don't give a rat's arse about ICS or "pure googily" and how they receive this phone.

Back to my original point, the article is still a lame hack job. Another obvious, yet overlooked point. Back on the OG Droid, or even the DX prior to Froyo, Blur was an issue. Post Froyo, and more importantly, post dual core processors, TW and blur ain't. As much crap as people give the Bionic, it is incredibly snappy. Do you really think a Razr will be weighed down by Blur, or Sense or TW will be an anchor? Just like those two water skiers slow down an aircraft carrier....

All I'm saying is argue the points based on relevant criteria, not things that are essentially going to be a wash.

Agree most people do not even know what blur or touchwiz is. They buy the phone that is advertised the most or "looks cool" it is a very minor group that roots and roms and all that. Blur and touchwiz aren't that bad and with dual cores and 1 gb of ram they aren't slowing down the phones. Maybe to some you hate the UI but if everyone did they wouldn't be using it. There is a reason they all add their UI to android.

You are correct; a lot of people don't mind it. Doesn't mean that those of us that do should get penalized IMO. Choice is the key but, on Verizon, we have it. :(

Yet :D

I would like to pre-order as well, but does anyone know whether they will program the 4G sim card before shipping it out, or would you have to take it to the store to get it activated?

I got both the Tbolt and Bionic online and both shipped with a working sim card. Just install sim and you good to go.

You raise some good points. But the original issue is whether or not UI's like non-Sense, MotoBlob or TouchPiss ruin the pure Android experience, and in my opinion, they do.

The masses don't care what a "pure" Android experience is like. They just want something that works. Unfortunately, the lags and freezes that most Android-haters point out are a result of the crap UI's more often than not. Now, whether the RAZR is a different beast that gets rid of these problems or not cannot yet be determined.

But the poor battery life issues that are being reported in the Bionic forums and in other areas, although having something to do with 4G, are also a result of having a very heavy UI running a ton of background processes constantly. Some people having a Thunderbolt have reported average or better battery life when installing certain ROMS.

I agree with the notion that if Verizon doesn't sell many SGN's, they won't ever release another pure Google phone. I wish we could change that, and perhaps we can (if we get the word out enough). Maybe we should all sign up on the SGN page at Verizon just to show them how many of us are interested, and tell a bunch of others to sign up as well. But in the end, RAZR will outsell SGN by a wide margin. But the reason isn't because MotoBlob is merely an insignificant add-on. It's because people, in general, have no idea what a real Android device is, and most of them never will.

Best buy's buyback program is garbage. $30bucks to buyback your phone. Target Mobile's is way better because they just quote you a price and buy it back. No upfront payment when you purchase your phone. Doesnt matter if you bought a phone from them or not.

There are a lot of options you have to sell a phone back and I agree to have to pay that much for buyback is a joke when you have others that are free and quote you a price.

Supposedly the battery life on the nexus isnt that good either and that is a "pure" android device.

I just hope that Samsung and Google market the SGN heavily, otherwise I'm afraid it may not sell as well as it should, thanks to the third-class treatment it's getting from VZW in terms of marketing and release.
