You're living up to your namesake ;)

haha well I am cross-referencing checks to a database of petty cash at work right now so my attention is divided between this and that and the drug addicts that broke into my house today. (long story: busted a break in ring, nothing stolen, no one hurt, only a broken door, actually kind of funny)

Is there any possible downside to rooting? Besides voiding a warranty.

LOL if you're the type who likes to fumble around in file systems and delete things without knowing what they do, then possibly :D

But otherwise, I'm hard pressed to find one.

Many apps plus their data install to a system area that requires root access in order to restore, and without restore, backup ability is meaningless.

Rooting is the EXACT Android equivalent of gaining Admin access on your PC. No more, no less. The admin name in Android (or any unix) is literally called root.

Ok that's exactly what I needed to hear... eerrr read. I totally get it now! How did I not connect the word root with root access??

SMH...

GNex should have that title...

Don't worry, Gnex will have the first pentile 720p.

I'm not sure I'll NEED to root. I mean, no bloatware to remove and I won't be tethering, so... other than backups (which I am questioning my need for), why root?

There ya go. I'm just trying to get a feel for who will and who won't, and why they choose that route.

It's cool to see that people are asking questions about it though, hopefully we can clear the air about the process and what it enables you to do.

Well I know what it does... I have 3 rooted Droids and a rooted Eris (don't laugh - much) in the house. Just unsure if I'll need that for Nexus. As an early adopter, I might want that warranty more :)

I honestly was thinking the same thing. But... nah, I'll root it :D

That reminds me, this thread may be evidence some day in some wrongful termination lawsuits. Evidence AGAINST an employee. Think Hans would represent us? :p

I'm pretty lucky in that my work doesn't monitor my access. At least not for now. Hopefully I get the SGN before they do!

@Steven58 if you ever find nkk or another consummate chart-maker, I will gather the stats for a thread post chart :)

Can you guys believe we were just gaping at the sheer luck of a new guy's FIRST post hitting 20k yesterday and we're already hitting 21k? WOW

Where is this chart you guys are talking about?

Why would you root on a Nexus phone? You lose OTA OS updates, right? And since there is already no bloatware... what would be the point?

I rooted my Hero to get rid of the bloatware, speed it up, and increase space. But will that be necessary on an GN?

Seriously asking.

One major thing for me, AdBlock. You know all those little ads that developers put into apps these days? Ever want them gone? Root.

Yes.

Just like with Admin access on your PC. You get the power to completely screw things up.

First rule of rooting - Read, read and then read some more. Get clear answers that work for you in the All Things Root subforum, and that won't be a problem.

What, no Gentoo?

For a small architecture system, I wasn't interested in chasing ultimate configurability. I did go with the LXDE (desktop) that was about it. Did I mention I have used GIMP for my photo editing - just because? :D

whew... I leave for a couple hours to spend some time with the kids and come back to 200+ more post. This thread is a challenge just to stay caught up!! LOL. Nice to have a group as large as what we have here and not have all the drama that usually goes along with it. I'm looking forward to reading a lot more in the SGN threads and tweeking the new toy.

I'm feeling optimistic but I think it's too soon for a victory dance. Signs are good and I believe in a 17th launch, but it's still speculation until Verizon says so.
