following this method below, is there anything else i have to do before i bring it in to get serviced? will i be able to use the phone until i take it in after this is done? should i search for software updates or prl/pri updates after?

to get s-on
1.download this file:PC36IMG6.17.zip
2.rename the file by deleting the numbers so that it is only PC36IMG and do not add any zip to the name as windows hides extensions.
3.transfer the zip file to the root of the sd card.
4.power off (make sure that fastboot is turned off) then press and hold power+vol down.
5.hboot should scan for it. select yes to update.
6.reboot your phone

next we need to get a stock rom and stock recovery
7.download this file:PC36IMG_SuperSonic_GB_Sprint_WWE_4.53.651.1_Radio_ 2.15.00.0808_NV_2.15_release_209995_signed.zip
8.rename the file to PC36IMG. again make sure that you do not add a zip as windows hides extensions.
9.connect your phone via usb to the pc and transfer the file over to the root of the sd card. also delete the previous PC36IMG file. make sure that you do not get the two files mixed up as they will be named the same.
10.power off then press and hold power+vol down.
11.hboot should see the file and will ask you to update, select yes.
12.verify that you have s-on by going to the hboot screen.

if you have s-on then congrats you are now unrooted!

Yes you should be able to use the phone with no problems. Just make sure your contacts are synced with google. As far as any updates I wouldnt be conserned if your taking it in for service they will probably go ahead and update everything anyways.

really when you unroot all you are really doing is getting s-on and a stock rom with a stock recovery. so if everything went well then your phone should be working like it was stock.

well S is on from that method but im still running CM7 which i wasnt expecting...so i tried downloading the .exe below those instructions and running that from my PC but it says "an error occurred while running the setup" etc...

steps 7-12 where? i followed the instructions on unrooting on the rooting for dummies sticky, got S-On but no stock rom

steps 7-12 in my original post must not have worked because it didnt flash the stock rom

edit: just tried steps 7-12 again it flashes the zip but doesnt give me the stock rom/radio

So when you reboot to hboot, is it giving you the option to update? If not then it means that either the PC36IMG.zip file is not placed onto the root directory of your sd card (topmost level and not in any folders) OR you're not renaming the file correctly.

It doesn't prompt me it updates it on its own it says loading zip its in the root directory but unlike the first update it does it automatically ....

Run the RUU.exe found in the unrooting section of the gingerbread for dummies guide

You just run it from your computer and it will do all the work

tried that, and it keeps saying error [-5001 : 0x80070002] occurred when trying to run setup, please make sure you have finished any other previous setup and closed other applications. if error still occurs contact vendor

try and re-download the file and try again.

Reboot both phone and Computer then try it. The Setup thing is more of a Windows thing than a Phone issue.

redownloaded the file, restarted computer and phone, still getting the same error message

running the CM7 ICS rom if that matters.....

any other ideas? it doesnt say its in charge only mode but it says click here to turn on usb storage or whatever so the disk isnt mounted i know that

First thing I did was to test this on a machine with non-dell hardware - The issue was replicated on other hardware so this eliminated the chance of it being a hardware issue.

After a lot of effort I found that this error was caused because a system configuration file, 0x0409.ini was missing from my build. I included this file and error -5001: 0x80070002 didnt occur.
I didnt find much information about 0x0409.ini configuration file on the internet. The issue is resolved but I am not entirely clear how or why this file caused this error. What is 0x0409.ini file? Any inputs are appriciated.

Thanks

These files are all built in the DISK1 folder that contains the setup.exe launcher. If setup.exe is copied to some other location (for example, to CD or DVD media), all the files contained in the DISK1 folder need to be copied with it. If these files are not copied, it will not be possible to run the setup.

Packaged setups contain all the DISK1 files compressed into setup.exe.
