Eris to v2.x, when?

I think that HTC is/has tested 2.1 already on the Eris, since the Hero has essentially the same hardware and we KNOW it can handle it from the leaked videos. I am also thinking that Verizon is waiting until after the Droid update before doing anything with the Eris. It would cripple the network to try push an OTA update for both at the same time. The only reason HTC and VZW are even considering 2.1 is because the newer Apps Google is releasing don't work on 1.5 and the customers want those features/apps. It makes sense(ie. $$$) for HTC and VZW to give us them.

The reason why only the nexus 1 will have the animated wallpapers and a few other minor features that the rest don't is too allow it to maintain an air of exclusiveness to it. At least until the next "must have" phone is out. Assuming the N1 comes to VZW soon you will have 3 phones all with 2.1 but each in its own price bracket.
Low end=Eris
Mid range= Droid
Top end= Nexus 1

Add in the WinMo ,Palm's and Crackberry's and that is a bunch of smart phones with data plans for VZW to offer.

I joked about it being 1.6, even though we could get turn by turn, it's clear now, with Hero's planned 2.1 w/sense, we will get it eventually. So that is promising in itself. I don't really care much about new OS, I want these dang bugs worked out for sure. No more laggy keyboard, Youtube to work, etc.

If we get shafted and only get 2.0 I'll just pray for root and move to the Hero version of 2.1 instead. If you want something done right you do it yourself.

Since the reply was leading towards the possibility of an update I replied with this:

So does that mean an update is in the works and WILL happen but the Version and date are not defined yet?

and this this response:
Yes, this does mean that there is an update in the works that is going to happen. It has been confirmed, it was actually announced within the last 2 months on our Twitter account at www.twitter.com/htc. At the time there was not a specific date set yet, just early 2010, and the release date is still as yet undefined. While the version number has not been stated yet, it is almost certainly going to be version 2.X as the earlier 1.6 releases were for specifically for different devices. It can take awhile for an update to be made available because first the carrier requests certain specifications that they want incorporated in the update, then HTC developers can work on making the update to those specifications. Once it meets those specifications, Verizon can approve it and it can be released. We want to make sure that the update is as good as it can possibly be, addressing any issues that may have arisen along with creating the best user experience possible. I do realize how frustrating it can be to wait for these things, and we do appreciate your patience very much with this, along with the other Eris owners. The Twitter account I mentioned before is a good place to check the latest news and announcements. Once again, I thank you for your patience with this.

Looks like it WILL be 2.x at least

I wonder how true that email is. "Making it as good as it possibly can be?" Really? 1.5 is the epitome of Android and Sense?

That is a marketing comment. being an engineer myself, working in a R&D environment, I hear comments like that from marketing. I kind of blew off that little bit, but just wanted the best confirmation possible that an update is indeed coming someday

Yeah. It was announced we'd be getting the upgrade and that also to 2.1. The only question was "when?" and we still don't know. Tomorrow is the 12th and although it was a joke, it doesn't seem like we're gonna be getting it soon, especially not tomorrow.

I doubt we'll get it before the Hero does, let alone at the same time. If the Hero gets it mid-March, we get it two weeks after since the Hero is how much older than the Eris?

I just wish we could get any kind of update like 1.5.0001 so that our great programmers out there could find out how to root the phone. Then we could put whatever we want on it.
I'm upset that all these new programs have been coming out that I really want to use but can't because you need 1.6. I wish HTC could just push updates straight to us without having to go through Verizon. Knowing Verizon, they are the only reason we don't have anything yet. HTC said back in Dec that as soon as they got Sense working on the new OS, we would see updates but they have had Sense fixed for a while and yet nothing!
rant over

Yes, waiting for the update sucks big time but then think about it. You will really appreciate it when it does come out. You've had plenty of time to get used to the coolness factor of what your phone can do and now you're gonna get a whole new set of features. Root is KING though! When the developers get this phone rooted, any update from HTC or Verizon becomes irrelevant for many of us.

This is really the only site with dedicated and useful forums/info about the Eris.

BTW, anyone want to buy my Eris? lol j/k

it seems like the Eris is HTC's ugly ducky of the family ...aint it? :D
Such is the tradeoff for an overall sexier phone and better UI. Sooner or later we'll have 2.0 - but the Moto Droid will always be ugly and have a boring UI.

Of course, that's just my opinion - but it's why I bought the Eris even though I knew it'd be a while before I got all the bells and whistles.

Besides, Motorola has a long history of making me sad.

My fellow Eris users, I have a confession to make...

I am the reason we have not received the 2.1 update. Since I now own an Eris, I have imparted my curse of the shaft to all of you. This curse is also responsible for the difficulties with rooting the Eris as well. I am truly sorry to have tainted all of you with my damnation. I pray that all of you will find some sort of pity deep in you heart to forgive me.

May God have mercy on my soul...

Can a software update like 2.1 update the camera on the Droid Eris? The camera is so grainy. Or is it only hardware related?

Well, it might update some things the way drivers for your video card on your computer do. I wouldn't expect a world of a difference, but it might fix somethings that prevent the camera from working at its best.

As far as 2.1 goes, I change philosophies everyday on this and here's my latest one. The Droid and the N1 are both Google phones, in the sense they don't have custom UIs and run Home. Assume, for a second, that despite being made by two different companies, they still come from the same place originally.

Take that with current developments that the Incredible is coming with 2.1, with a date TBA. The Droid still does not have 2.1 like the N1. They both don't run custom UIs. What does that mean for HTC phones running Sense? If the Incredible comes out, say, mid-March. It's been a month since the N1 has been out and the Droid doesn't have 2.1, it will probably be longer than a month for the Eris to get 2.1 after the Incredible comes out.

This was posted on the HTC Droid Eris Facebook Fan Page yesterday...hopefully it won't be at the end of March...

HTC Droid Eris Just to remind all of the patiently waiting fans of the Droid Eris, when Verizon announced the Eris update on December 4th, they said the planned release would be sometime in Q1 2010. January 1st - March 30
