Help I'm lost??

My phone updated to the "ginger bread" today. My wife's did not. I have spent all day trying to figure it out. I have common sense but not too much computer or phone smarts. I have been told to "root". Use Ocim. I have no idea what any of this means. I have clicked on some link that was supposed to be a one click deal and it rooted the phone.. But it never downloaded anything, thus never doing what I needed. Can someone speak lamens terms to me please?

lets start simple, what do you want to do with the phone?
If all you want is normal phone use, make calls maybe play on internet some and other things stock gingerbread works perfectly.

if you want to get rid of that extra crapware then you do need root and probably something like titanium back up to help you remove that crap.

To find what is safe to remove check the thread removeable apps or something.

Basically it's just a play phone. She will talk text and play on the internet. Take pictures and occasionally listen to music. Very basic. Very bland, but she liked the way mine looks now. Also the gingerbread gave me a book app which she is interested in. If you could help.. I would be greatly appreciative.

Ok you want to put the new gingerbread on her phone? As it has not updated itself yet?

ok the fastest way to do that is using odin, it is a recovery tool for samsung phones You can get the stock version, less problems and its not rooted. Or you can get the rooted version, with the possibility of needing to fix some things.

Thanks but there is no samsung usb driver on my computer apparently and not one in the file. This whole process is frustrating.
