Case in point... how many Bionics do you think they sold after releasing the RAZR? They'd probably have a hard time giving away Bionics for free right now. And that phone released 2 months ago. They took a bath on the Bionic and they are going to take a bath on the RAZR. Right now is all about decreasing the water in the bath tub as much as possible.
I understand you point of view, I just don't necessarily agree with it.YES... but they have an investment in the RAZR. If nothing else, millions in advertising. How do they recover that investment if nobody will buy the phone?
Right now, the Bionic is listed as $249 vs the $299 of the RAZR, hardly sounds like a firesale. CSR's are pushing the Bionic hard, and if you do a search on Verizon's website, the Bionic comes up high in the "may we suggest" list. I'm sure they are selling them fine.
I also disagree your assertion that they "took a bath". Carriers make a commitment to sell, but are in no way responsible for overstock. Overstock get sent back to the manufacturer. Go look up how many Palm Pre's were returned, or that Windows messaging phone (forgot name).
Keep in mind that Google also has a vested interest in the RAZR, now that they've announced acquisition of Motorola Mobility, so your anger may be misplaced.
All I'm saying is that they picture is far more complicated than you make it out. There are contractural obligations that get met, but you are far oversimplifing the situation.
