There's also a LOT more phones to choose from on Verizon.

At the time there was only the OG Droid and Eris. Plus there was the fallout from the nexus one fiasco where Verizon killed it because it was too similar to the DInc. It was truely the perfect storm.

You lost me on the "instant gratification". So, you are gratified at the "idea" of getting the phone? I think "instant gratification" should be reserved until you ACTUALLY get the phone, but that's just me. I guess, for some people, the anticipation is more important.
