Root Anyone tried the ICS rom on XDA?

John Redcorn

Android Enthusiast
It's in the Desire HD android dev section on xda.

edit here: [ICS][Alpha 2][Devs only] ICS for Desire HD | Alpha build is online | Source port - xda-developers

I only ran it for about 10-15 mins before flashing back to cm7. Mobile data doesn't work, they say wifi does but I have no wifi at work anymore. Going to try it again when I get home.

No audio at all, phone calls or otherwise it seems, no camera, no hw acceleration, no mobile data and it's way slow!

I didn't read any of that 200+ page thread on xda, if I have some more time I might look in there, maybe they have ways to get more stuff working.

Though I'm really just very surprised and pleased we have this much already. There's not even a phone for sale officially in the US with ICS yet and I was able to boot it up this morning!

SMS does work and I had to let a Nexus S-owner friend of mine know what OS I was texting him from :). He's too chicken to try out some of the (I hear good) NS ICS roms.

Awesome thanks, I'll have to try that. Alpha 2 is what I used. I didn't read into the thread over there to realize there was newer. I did flash the gapps listed in the op over there but they didn't really do anything for me with no data lol.

I just tried that newer one and did have to flash the kernel as well to get sound.

Data is working!

Just curious, I didn't have to manually create an apn in here, it just took off connecting to the internet. How does it know my apn already? I didn't have to enter one on CM7 either but I assumed it was just because something I read about CM having a list of them built in and it can tell by your sim or towers which to use?

The default apn that came with the rom is an Cingular one. (At least for me and another inpsire user. No idea about DHD users.)

There wasn't much discussion on apns so I assume it was included somewhere in the source code. I don't really know how apns are decided though.

Mmk imma have to flash this just for the novelty in it lol. thank you for the links :)

.....ok a side note here...if you are newish to rooting/flashing roms think twice before flashing this. after flashing this (without gapps btw) I came to the realization that one this didnt have rom manager or superuser with it and two no titanium backup. Also when I tried to view files from my sd card on my computer with usb storage while this rom was running I either couldn't figure out how to turn that option on on the phone or you just cant do it so i would not have been able to move another rom to the sd card from my computer. luckily i did have a rom on my sd card so that much was not a problem. without gapps i couldnt flash cwm by getting it from the market so i went to 4shared to get rom manager. after getting that and superuser it still would not let me flash a backup. i probably could have downloaded a rom from there but if you are not close to a wifi it could be a pain esp without unlimited data plan. another lucky thing was that i had fullwipe1.3.zip on my card so i rebooted into recovery and did full wipe and flashed my rom just so I could then flash a backup. I am sure that alot of that was user error lol but make sure that you do flash gapps for this. I am sure I will get hazed for my noobishness but figured i would be able to answer a few questions before they are asked.

FYI, Once you have cwm on your phone (probably put there by rom manager or your root kit) after that point rom manager is really just an in-OS frontend for clockwork recovery. Clockwork recovery sits on a separate partition of your phone that this rom and *most* others do not mess with.

CWM was still there on your phone and without rom manager you can use cwm directly by powering off the phone. wait a sec, then hold vol down then power for a few seconds and it brings up the bootloader menu, choose recovery from there and you can wipe partitions, flash roms, flash backups etc.

Keep an eye on the thread over there. Looks like they've gotten some form of hardware acceleration going.

Lol i have had bad experiences in hboot before. I also think that not all inspires will allow you to get to recovery from the hboot screen mine being one of those. while in hboot for some reason using the volume rocker does not work to select recovery :( the reason that I know this is because i was trying to install a new splash screen one time and the directions said to go into hboot and do the update there. when I went into hboot my phone would never let me move the curser to select anything and somehow hard reset and loaded the stock non rooted rom on my phone so when I booted it up I had no ability for superuser to grant permissions. took all dam night to figure out how to get a rooted rom flashed back on my phone because I could not flash cwm. ty ace hack kit for getting me through that lol. anyway long story short...getting into recovery from hboot is not an option for me.

Just a bit of advice.... openly admitting to pirating ROM Manager is pretty uncool. :(

Wasn't able to download from the android market and no TI backup and as stated earlier I had no way to get into recovery just so I could flash a rom so was left with limited options. I paid for my premium license :) I'm fully supporting the devs and appriciate what they do and said in my earlier post that you need to flash the gapps so that no one else runs into this same problem. I don't support pirating software. I have spent a lot of money on premium licenses for many different apps and software.

you are right that pirating is uncool i agree.

They say it's only a hack/halfway hw accelerated but it's way fast compared to before from what I saw this morning!

Thread title changed cause there are a lot more people working on this than the one guy I attributed the rom to in the title.

Yeah its framework/Open GL hack for 2d hardware acceleration. Thats why things like gallery, maps, etc don't work.

I've been running the hardware acceleration build since yesterday and i must say. It's pretty awsome. My daily driver now mainly cause i can get around/don't need the stuff that currently doesn't work.

On a side note: Qualcomm released sources for ICS and apprently the CM team is on it.

I saw that posted in the thread but didn't understand what they mean by that, is it the sources to the hw drivers? like for the camera, touchscreen accelerometer etc?

Aren't hw drivers something that no one's ever open sourced before? Thats a pretty awesome thing if that's what that means. (Actually whatever it means is awesome 'cause it means cm9 coming to me sooner!)

Not sure exactly. It looks like some type of source code. I'm just going to assume that its generic source code and not OEM optimized (if they do that).

You can view there entire android git branch here:

https://www.codeaurora.org/gitweb/quic/la/

I noticed some open merge requests for cm listed from here.

There wasn't much discussion on apns so I assume it was included somewhere in the source code. I don't really know how apns are decided though.

If your apn isnt working on this rom (data isnt working correctly) then do the following:

1: flash back to your previous rom (which data works)

2: go to Settings--> mobile network--> Access Point Names: here should be a list of your APNs (there should only be one if you havent tampered with anything. Also these directions my differ slighly in header names but should generally be the same.)

3: click on the apn and it should open up all the settings for it. Copy all those down or take screen shots to refer to later.

4: flash back to ICS rom, go to same APN setting and edit the current apn to match the one you wrote down or took pictures of EXECTLY as it was. Now press *menu* and then *save*.

Exit out and data should now work fine. A little time consuming but not too complicated.

I searched xda and its because you probably still have your PD98IMG.zip on your sd card. (I did) Delete it or rename it and next time you enter hboot it should work. (It will still go thru proccess of looking for an image but it will fail and take you back to a working hboot screen.) Hope this helps!

Thanks for the advice. It is still on my as card. I was able to fix the issue I had at the time. The reason I brought that up us because I wanted people to avoid having a problem when flashing this rom without having a way to get back first. Can I rename this to anything.zip?

Ive been over there, on the front lines of ICS, from aospX by eXistZ, to Ascension by Flappjaxxx... EITHER are capable of daily driving... dont be scared... Good Luck

Post 3 to get my sig...

What's everyone running now? I'm still on CM7 as my daily, I flash lord clockans ice cold sandwich from time to time to see how things are progressing. New version today says it has working panorama camera. I'm about to try that out.

Anything with working video camera yet? or working video camera with 3rd party app?

I need me a working video camera and some more cool cyanogenmod type features and I'm ready to convert.

I just got Aospx by existz....so far so good. Wierd thing, when I first installed it com.android.phone error showed up...and nothing would work. Tried a few tweaks, no luck...on a 3rd reboot it magically started working and its been on ever since. Im on build 22 and 23 just came out. Ill wait a bit, cant wait till he comes out with finished version.
My only real complaints
1. In gallery if you dont wait for the previews to load, the phone locks up. (My buddy has a Milestone 2 with froyo that does the same so.....)
2. The audio player shuts down immediately and music through Real Player has a slight buzz to it.
Put a Sense like Clock?Weather widget on it from Beautiful widgets and a snese 3 style lock screen and so far Im happy with it. It does run smoother than My GB Sense 3.0 rom and I loved it.

Ok I couldnt stand it, I stepped up to build 24....so far video cam isnt working. audio from real player is still fuzzy and music player dies.

Try videocam Illusions from market(play), Its included in Ascension 7,& 8. and If you read back many pages in aospX, you'll find the post where i discovered it working... lol Give it a try if your on 24, it wont hurt to try.
