***Official Galaxy Nexus Pre-Release speculation thread**

Ugh. The girl in the office with a TV called us over. She loves Kathy Lee and Hoda. They have this incredibly irritating schtick where they have a family come on the show, and present a very touching story, like the kid saved them from a fire, or one of them donated a kidney to another one, or something like that.

Anyway, at the end of the segment, they have these crappy singers come on and sing a song that was written about their experience. Everyone cries.

So. freaking. corny.

The girl in the office is standing in front of the TV, with her arms crossed, and is occasionally wiping her eyes. She then turns to us and says "Wasn't that so beautiful?!"

We just roll our eyes and walk out, thankful for the distraction but sickened at the same time.

Kid saved them from a fire and then donated his kidney!

<sniffle><sniffle>

Mods, could you please do something to kill off the flood of off-topic bloat that are occurring in this thread? Some of us actually come here to find out updates about the actual phone.

Or, can we assume that threads here are simply for general discussion and not for actual droid content? Sorry about being blunt, but it has become pretty damned annoying.

As was posted in the OP and mentioned a bunch of times, the OP of this thread is kept updated with the more credible/substantiated updates. If you are only here for updates on the release, that is your best place to read. :)

One - i suggest you pm one of the mods if you want to take up such a complaint. I suggest phases.
Two - the nexus isn't a Droid. Droid is a Verizon branded moniker and not all Android is phones are Droid while all droids are androids.

Oooh, I think I remember having that thing on my OG Droid as well. Did the material have a strange textured pattern to it, with the back part having a "hump" on the top and bottom, and the front was just a rectangular frame? If we're thinking about the same case, then this TPU is WAY less sticky than that one.
Yeah, that's the one. Hated it, added WAY too much bulk to the phone and I couldn't stand what it did to my pockets. Put up with it for a month or two before giving up. When I took it off, I was shocked at how much thinner the phone was without, it was like discovering the phone all over again. Tossed the case somewhere, no idea where it is now, haha.

Read the op, this is a pre-release lounge type thread. And this is not a thread for "droid" content as the nexus is not a verizon branded and marketed droid phone, but rather its an Android phone

I know how she feels........ I feel the same way every time I hear the GNex release date has been pushed out. :(

Launch threads (per admin) have a lounge atmosphere to them. Off topic chatter is allowed, as long as it doesn't stray too much. ;)

All pertanent phone information is included in post #1, including a warning from the admin (Phases) that this is a lounge type thread.

If you truely believe the topics are going too far, then report the post in question and the mods will make a determination.

LCD tech explanations with decent coverage of IPS -

OLED (Nexus) is a light emissive technology - the panel elements emits light.

An LCD is a light permissive technology - the panel is composed of apertures (ok to think of them as shutters) that open and close to permit light, provided by a lighting element behind the panel, to flow through. The light then passes through colored filters (red, green or blue depending on the subpixel) and usually various polarized films.

The tiny apertures (shutters) exist for each subpixel.

They open or close through some magic for the materials using what we call an electrochemical response. That response makes each LC element act as if it were mechanical (hence, ok to think, like a shutter).

There are many different ways to achieve that - each electrochemical scheme is given a name. One is IPS, introduced in 1996. Super IPS was invented in 1998. LG has been making it for ten years. IPS isn't new, but it's been getting refined over the years.

How to get a brighter LCD: use a brighter backlight.

How to make an LCD perform better in a very high-light (like sunlight) environment: use a brighter backlight and some creative polarizing overlays so the display doesn't get swamped by the ambient light.

Getting the sandwich of backlight + LCD_panel + filters + polarizers to play together is a little like a Rubic's cube, everything must balance in the solution.

Why better LCDs don't seem to exist or are just emerging on cell phones: expense and power efficiency. Bright backlights have had a habit of eating batteries, and the rest of the sandwich eats up light at each step. And those things have been steadily improving.

The importance of using IPS technology to get there: aside from recent advances (equivalent to advances in the other technologies) - only for marketing and making you brand-loyal.

IPS is basically a description of one of the many electrochemical schemes used for one part of the display.

Here's a pretty good write-up on who has made what sort of LCD panel when -

TFT LCD - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

It's limited and doesn't tell the whole story for all technologies, but the story it tells is accurate.

One of the technologies to watch for brightness and outdoor performance is LG's NOVA, brought out earlier this year -

NOVA Display vs Super AMOLED Plus vs Retina Display vs IPS LCD

Other good stuff is coming, that's a write-up for another day.

Congrats if you've read this far! :)

Prior to Android, I hung out with the HD types. The terms "light emissive" and "light permissive technologies" were my creations, so if you've read similar articles on this subject, those might have been mine, or were taken from mine. After all this typing that hardly anyone will read, I thought it was ok to horn-toot a little, and with the even fewer people that have gotten this far, I thought, what's the harm. ;)

I did read it all! And it was technical enough that I didn't feel like a child but understandable enough to not shake my head and wander to the next post.

Very true. Should come in handy at work for me, I'm less worried about those days now... Just wondering about my heavy usage days filled with playing on my phone while comforting a pukey puppy (like I'm doing now)

I hope puppy feels better soon.

There is a statement in the original post that this is allowed to be off topic. That is per Phases. All truly relevant information is also available in the original post of this thread.

Thats what I just did with my charge. I had a double layer incipio case on it - great case, super protective and durable, but really thick! I took it off a week or too ago, rocked it naked for a while, then put on the thin verizon case I have for it. I need it in as perfection conditions as I can keep it for its sell back! But my OG, he was always naked, I mean it was made of metal - which wound up having major chunks taken out of it by retirement haha. My gnex will be snuggly cuddled by some thing TPU material case most likely.

Cool, I actually kind of like the second logo! Thanks for sharing. Our home office for the company I work for is located in Newark, NJ, which I get to visit a handful of times a year so..... Glassboro has to be better than that, right?

That walking owl thing is a Prof. Rowan University in glorious Glassboro, NJ. It's short for Professors, since Rowan originally started off as a teacher's college in the 1920's before evolving. At least they tried to update the logo a bit, to intimidate TCNJ and all the SUNY
schools.

Dood, you have a REAL talent for explaining tech. Call me envious, I usually get a glassy eyed, tongue hanging look when I explain tech. Thank you!

As others have said, this thread is unique.

It's kind of like the office break room or water cooler - no telling what's going to be discussed here - this is really a lounge-type thread, to hang out and discuss the phone or whatever.

Also as mentioned, the real updated info is in the OP - but lots of good stuff is in the many other threads in this forum.

Once the phone releases in the US, this thread will lock, and it will be business as usual - phone device stuff in the phone forum, chatting and horseplay in the Lounge.

Sorry for your frustration, others have felt it too, we mods hear you.

Best thing is to join in the fun here if you've got a mind to, or enjoy the OP of this thread and the other fine, information-only threads in this forum.

Hope that clarifies, cheers, thanks! :)

If it just shipped, you may be able to change the destination address. Start with the shipper first, then maybe follow up with UPS to make sure they have the change.

Thanks! I will try contacting Amazon Wireless today and see what they can do :) i feel like an idiot because I think the same thing happened the last time I moved. Lol. It'll all be worth it on Christmas!

Hey everyone. Been watching this tread for awhile now and I am loving the discussions on here. I wanted to ask if anyone knows if the Verizon Nexus will get updates from Google or will they have to go through Verizon? Or is downloading the updates from Google a possibility too? Thanks!

That is sweet. I almost went with red, but I've had trouble with cops deciding to follow me for no reason other than my bike was red and they probably thought I was going to go into warp speed. On a black bike, I get much less attention. Although I suppose that ups my potential for getting hit by senile old ladies. . .again.

That flat black is too cool, they didn't have it when I bought mine.

Yeah methinks EM would make a great technical marketing person :) It takes a certain kind of affinity for explaining technical stuff in a way non-technical people can understand. I know I fail at this miserably. I'm too technical and usually fail to properly explain something to my family/friends when they ask (e.g. what do I do at work heh).

I hope this phone doesn't release now, I'm gonna miss this thread. :(

Just kidding, I'm willing to sacrifice the fun here for a Nexus in hand. You'll all be missed. Until we hit the lounge, that is.
