***Official Galaxy Nexus Pre-Release speculation thread**

Hey everyone! Just got off the lurk train and wanted to ask everyone a question. Have been enjoying the commentary in here since the beginning. Now to my question...

I've been waiting a long time (since May) to upgrade to a new phone and had my sights set on the G-Nex. However, now since it has taken so long to launch I can't help but look towards 2012 and the quad-core phones.

What are some reasons as to why I should stick with my decision and snatch up a G-Nex rather than wait for a quad-core phone? Or should I wait? I want to have no regrets when getting the G-Nex.

Thoughts? Thanks!

I didn't know anyone still uses the CR-48. I have one, I just never use it because it has way too many bugs, it's slow, and it's heavier than my macbook air. :D

I can't imagine the chrome books lasting much longer since they are not selling and they can only sell to a special niche that are not buying them. The cloud is not quite there yet.

I do love that keyboard though. :p
Have a lot of the bugs for it been fixed?

No offense to any sources here, but I also don't put much faith in anything I hear. I wouldn't call what we hear from the more credible sources "rumors", but rather informed speculation, just not facts.

There are very few in Verizon who know the truth, and the chances of this leaking to out to someone lower in the chain would leak this information here is very small.

Best buy employees.....you are going to put stock in what they say....really?

I do expect the phone to be out by the end of the month, but I have no reason to believe it's going to be out on any particular date, whether its the 8th, 15th, 22nd, 29th etc. Just don't plan on having it until close to new year's, and you won't be disappointed again.

No matter how amazing the GNex and ICS turn out to be, I'm never going to be fully satisfied until they come up with an update or method allowing users to back up all/most of their app data without requiring one to root his/her phone first. The more mainstream AndroidOS becomes, the more they need such a requirement. Particularly if Google's vision of the future doesn't involve removable SD cards, they have to make a method that's easy for anyone to understand who's looking to backup more than their contact list, calendar info, and pictures.

If he doesn't push that button every 108 seconds, we won't be getting the Galaxy Nexus:D

Oh no!

Welcome.
My 2 cents, for what they are worth is that if you keep waiting for the next big thing, you'll always be waiting and never have a phone. Who knows exactly how long it will be for quad-cores to come out. If they're announced at CES, it could easily take till this time next year for them to actually start being released. Personally, I'd take the plunge -- I mean, I am! I know my current phone, a DCharge, just isn't cutting it already, for various reasons. Plus 4g is awesome.

For one thing, you might be waiting a good long while for a lot of apps which effectively support four cores. Not a ton really even support two well yet.

Welcome to the platform. Please make sure you collect all your belongings when you leave the car.
As for not waiting for a quad-core... Personally I don't see it as happening quickly. We know they're coming but we knew this phone was coming too and look how long it's been. There will always be something bigger or better on the horizon but in this case I think you'll be disappointed if you pass and wait.

Glad you stopped by.

Choice is entirely yours. All I can leave you with is this: Stick it out, and by the time something else is released, there will be news of an even better device, and after that one, and even better one, and so on.

I don't really expect to see typical quad core devices until mid to late next year. I know there have been a few that might come early next year, but you are putting faith in speculation.

Because once a release date for the quad-cores has been set, a higher clocked quad-core will be announced will be released within 6 months. You will play this game forever with technology.

Add in the HUGE developer base with the Nexus program, and I think you're more wise to purchase what you want now.

Plus - a quadcore in a phone? What are you doing - rendering CADs?

I posted this to a similar questions someone had..
With this psychology you will always be waiting in an endless circle for the "next big thing" (especially in Android). Enjoy life, get the phone, get bored of it in 3 months, and move on!

Besides, most computer processors these days don't even have the programs that can efficiently handle quad-cores to boost in performance, so I am sure smartphones are a long ways back at this point. That being said I do have a dual processor, 8-physical core (16 total cores) desktop :), so I am not one to talk.

Sure...

We carry on convo through thread topics in this section.. social banter goes into the lounge. :)

Steven

Nice, just wanted to make sure there was somewhere to go once this forum closes. Will a general forum be opened once this one closes?

Edit: ninja'd, thanks Chief. Looking forward to getting the speculation and rumors out of the way and enjoying the phone with everyone that's been waiting.

Guess what?? You don't even get 3 guesses at this point. Lol. I have seen Chasing Amy though so I do know who Jay & Silent Bob are!
The movie is pretty funny. It's about as off topic and crude as you can get. Kevin Smith is a huge Star Wars fan, so there's lots of references. Star Wars viewership is a pre-requisite!

But it's also got Matt Damon and Ben Afflack, and I have to say they are hillarious. Code 15 on the set means there a dead hooker in Afflack's trailer, stuff like that. Crude rude and obnoxious!
Dogma is also a classic, one of my favorite movies of all time. Jay and Silent Bob are the best two characters in the movie, IMO.

Yes it does. That HDMI dock looks awesome. Now you don't need to have an MHL adaptor if using that. Playing movies on my HDTV through that - heaven :)
I'm torn; the dock looks nice, but I wouldn't want to carry it somewhere if I'll be playing movies via at my phone at someone else's house. I think I'd rather just have the adapter.

Works for me even in a fresh incognito window.
Chrome, good man. Best browser available right now.

There will be other threads. I make a motion for a thread to be started in the next couple days, in the lounge, and linked here so everyone who wants it can subscribe. That way we have a 'watering hole' to go to when we aren't in the actual threads of using the phone.
Motion hereby seconded. :D

Really hope so. These docks have got me amped again.

Question: Steven or someone who has an idea of how this works when the phone actually does come out, where do we go after this thread closes to continue talking?? Really want to continue talking with everyone when we reach the finish line.

I don't. As fun as it is now, I stick around in the main forum and help as I can and as for help as I need to. I think that maybe I would if the lounge thread was visible from the main thread. Is that possible. A "lounge" thread linked in the general "Galaxy Nexus" forum?

FWIW...Just got back from my local Best Buy. The guy there that is a huge fan of this phone said that the leek that was floating around looked to be very true. He said VZW will have the phones on the 8th and BB and other places at a later date BUT he also was extremely sure that at least BB will be holding a pre-order.
What's the advantage of purchasing the phone through a third party retailer rather than through Verizon? I've heard some stuff about warranties that places like BB will give you, but I think the price will be the same. Can anyone enlighten me?

Because if you are looking to stay with Verizon, it might take till 2013 before they actually launch the phone... :p

All kidding aside - when a new phone first gets shown at CES or another big event, it usually takes several months at minimum before consumers can get their hands on it (even longer for Verizon).

I'll probably hang out mostly in the main thread and subthreads as well. But I do like the idea.

Certainly, if the mods see fit, there could be a sticky "all things GNex" info thread, including links to tweak, modify, get updated icon packs, wallpapers, etc. I don't see why a link to the GNex "after party" in the lounge couldn't be included as well.

Best Buy giftcards from relatives can be used to purchase the phone.

I swear, this thread reminds me of Cheers. We have our own regulars who could be our Sam, Norm, Cliff, Frazier, Diane, Rebecca, Carla, etc, and hilarity always ensues in this place. All we need is a bar and the theme music. Naturally, I expect someone will post a link to the Cheers opening theme after this.

So, who do we nominate to be Norm? :p
