Those numbers seem extremely low to me. I would think that a preorder would eat those all up and then some in 24 hours.

2001: A Space Odyssey. We find a black monolith on the moon that is obviously alien made. It's emitting a signal linking it to one of the moons of Jupiter.. where there is a massive monolith on one of Jupiter's moons. The main character starts approaching the monolith and his last words are, "My God.. it's full of stars!" Seeing that big picture of the Galaxy Nexus reminded me of the huge monolith. :D

Probably the most famous character in the movie is HAL, a computer that starts killing the astronauts on their journey to Jupiter. The movie can be a bit difficult to watch and understand, it's got a lot of symbolism and philosophy tied up in it but it's quite good.

Side note: On one of my trips to Ireland, I had the pleasure of staying in an old manor house that the owners run as a bit of an upscale bed and breakfast. One of the other guests was Keir Dullea, the actor who played Dave Bowman in the movie. Was very interesting to chat with him about his experiences making the movie, what he thought the ending was and what Kubrick was like. Very enjoyable time sitting in an 18th century drawing room drinking wine and discussing the philosophy of the movie.

The monolith only emitted the signal once. I went to Saturn in the book, Jupiter in the movie. The monolith also wasn't on a moon, it was in orbit between Io and Europa (orbit near Titan in the book).

Sorry, that's just the uber geek in me, but I do have to say that's an awesome story talking to the actor.

Yep, you're right.. trouble with great books being turned into great movies with a few changes. I muddle 'em up as I get older. I need to learn to rely more on Wikipedia than my memory as much as I hate to admit it. :)

he said another 60000 were on order...would these just be the first batch sent to retail?

That's my point... the 120,000 everyone said was just a specific region. That is now looking to be national... seems like way too few to go around. The other 60K are part of the original 120K order.

Those numbers would have nothing to do with pre-orders, that's store stock. Second, Verizon schedules shipping from a few major warehouses/distribution centers. So what you see there is not nationwide, just regional. With the mention of California, that likely indicates a western region.

Hey guys, another image found on the VZW website. Not nearly as earth shattering as before, but here's the highest res picture yet:

By the way, this is what the HTTP headers contain:

I have to admit that picture causes an inappropriate biological reaction

Yeah, that was posted a week or so ago. :)

it's actually from the AC forums... phil apparently got word today that they are getting phones and more are on order.

Everyone remember this one?

Got word that about 24,000 were delivered today. Another 61k still on order. 500 or so demo/launch units in California.

edit: yikes. waaaaay ninja'd. y'all are zippier than ever today.

movie stuff

well this may come as a shock, but this movie chick right here, hasn't seen it either! Yes, yes I am ashamed :( It's on my list, but as I tell the many friends who always ask me about the latest movies because I'm in the 'biz', I'm too busy making movies to watch them. Hopefully over the winter I will have a huge marathon to go over the classics and recent hits I've wanted to see but haven't.

SUPER cool you met the real Dave! I may not have seen the whole film before, but I know a ton about it, I bet it was a great convo. I almost wrote a philosophy paper on it actually, but being more familiar with The Matrix, I used it as my subject.

I just left my local Verizon store where the person helping me asked me when the GNex will be out when they found out that's what I was looking for. The good news is that they let me know that the discounts on my account ($30 corporate and free activation were available to me in store and that if I got it from her that there was no problem getting the phone untouched.
On the other hand I decided to play with the Razr a bit and discovered the screen was suffering from screen burn. I was in the browser and I could see faint images of the home screen icons under the web page.
To end a positive note, I didn't think 4G had rolled out in my area yet but the phone had the 4G LTE symbol lit up in the notification bar.
Now if only the phone I want would finally show up.....

ahhh but if you know your book/film history, you know that both were written simultaneously and that Kubrick actually was an uncredited collaborator of the book. They just felt that certain things could be expressed in print vs. the super visual style they wanted for the movie. So the choices of them varying were deliberate on the part of the writers because they wanted to exhibit each medium's benefits.
