Pros/Cons of HTC Rezound vs. Galaxy Nexus

OK, folks. Sorry if my previous post was irritating to some. I really didn't mean to start a fight over Gnex vs Rezound. I just didn't feel like some posts making Gnex out to be like garbage phone. Granted signal reception is an important part of smart-phone, but that's not the only thing when considering my choice. OS, UI, processor, Display, camera, battery life, form factor are in play as well. Nexus is pretty good on all those aspects. And if you include WiFi, GPS in reception, I bet Nexus really delivers in those. So the antenna/radio for WiFi, GPS must be good at least.

As for the data reception issue that Nexus is getting flamed on, I will look into the antenna design thing too but I'm pretty much convinced it's software issue. By now you are all aware that ICS is reporting signal differently (big increment in dBm, maxed at -75dBm, LTE signal, etc) that makes it look worse even when reception is similar. Having compared Nexus to Charge, Stratosphere that have similar radios but on GB, I bet that radio firmware is Nexus is incomplete, especially 4G part. Despite some delays on VZW, I'm convinced that nexus was released with unfinished radio firmware. So I'm expecting to see radio patches, fixes coming soon. Though it remains to be seen how much it will improve data connectivity, it will get better for sure.

Again I don't have any problem with anyone going with Rezound or Razr because of Nexus not working properly for them. I really wish they get updated to ICS soon, so we can take ICS out of equation when evaluating signal reception. By then Nexus will have radio with fixed driver, so it will be interesting to retest them all.

And I bet that signal loss number I was getting as high as, oh, 30% in the battery status cell standby section was just another ICS/Nexus reporting anomaly.

My wifes charge data issues never got better either. Decided hardware issue. Bad thing is got the Nexus and it was worse. Worried about same radios in the charge! The screen banding bothered me but not her. She loves lwp's and she was upset how poorly they run. We were both shocked that the camera sucked. But other than that the Nexus is great!

When it comes to a smart phone most important thing is data to us other wise its not a phone to us, its a mini tablet.

I was real tempted to hold on till Jan 15 (drop dead return date) but figured since the powers that be weren't acknowleging anything other than a reporting problem it would be best to return the Gnex and just get a new phone. Which I did about a month ago (yep, I had he Gnex for only about a week). And as it turned out, nothing has been done and it's too much of a risk to keep a phone that was clearly unacceptable, hoping that someday it would be fixed. The signal loss was ridiculous and so was the battery drain. And I live in a 4G extended area so there is no denying the reality of the situation....I was screwed with the Nexus.

Go read the Thunderbolt forums. Everyone wanted to believe that new radios and OTA updates would fix the phone but they never did. If anything all the OTA updates did was pacify the owners by having the phone interpret how it attempted to pull in the signal. The phone never got better at pulling in the signal, it just stopped trying as hard (thus helping the battery).

Yeah, in the end i believed people who chose to switch to the rezound and ended up happy compared the the gnex users reaching for unverified and unreleased fixes. I want a phone that does everything flawlessly and until that happens, i will take the closest thing to it. <3

I find it interesting that so many people returned their galaxy nexus for a rezound. I did too, but I took a little detour on the way.:o I picked up the nexus on 12/31. I already had a case ordered from ebay and a cling protector on the way. I got the phone home and after two hours returned it to Verizon. I'm not even going to pretend that I can participate in the uber tech discussion here on why, LOL. My reasons were a little more simple: s l o w, couldn't find my way around (came from an Incredible), and then the total deal breaker was the no facebook contact integration. Laugh if you will; it's ok. You'll laugh more when you find out that I took an iPhone for little over a week as the alternative.

OMG...what a dumb phone. I can't believe how many people in the world rave about how great the iphone is. It is so completely uncustomize-able. Having come from nearly 2 years of the Incredible, it was too much of a downgrade for me, so I coughed up the $35 and picked up the rezound.

I love it. The only thing I'm not crazy about is the circle thing. Other than that, we're good.

This is a Nexus vs. Rezound thread in the Rezound subforum. People in this thread are going to be talking about mostly those two phones with a slant towards the Rezound, so this isn't a surprise.

I'm sure there are plenty of people who purchased a Rezound, RAZR, or Nexus and returned it for another of the three. They are three simply amazing phones and you can't go wrong with either. I personally believe that the Nexus has the most impressive hardware, and it's great being on the newest OS, but it's still my opinion that the Rezound provides the best out of box experience of the three.

It's a shame that Verizon turned down the Galaxy S II though. I still feel that it was the best handset released in 2011. After playing with the RAZR/Rezound and not wanting to wait on the Nexus, I jumped ship to AT&T and decided between importing the Nexus or the SGS2. I chose the Galaxy.

Oh and you don't have to be an uber-nerd to visit this site. Sometimes it helps though....

I'm not laughing, but it's unfortunate that anybody would give up on a new phone without giving it a chance to see what it can do, and two hours wouldn't begin to scratch the surface.

The Nexus has reasonably leading edge hardware and certainly is not slow, so if it felt that way to you then it was worth finding out what was wrong. And no of course you won't instantaneously find your way around a brand new operating system with brand new user interface. There are also solutions like FriendCaster for FB contact syncing.

Don't get me wrong -- I'm delighted that the Rezound is working well for you. But try to have some patience and don't jump ship the first time something doesn't work the way you expect!

Some people enjoy user friendly. Which may explain her affair with the iPhone...
I love that the rezound is so close to the incredible and am not as excited about ics as most.

Well .... before married life........ I sometimes decided that the special person I had been trying to get a date with for six months just wasn't my cup of tea, and that was in the first 30 minutes of dinner and before the entree arrived - humanoids being slightly more complex ( :) ) than fancy smartphones ...... I take no issue with jumping ship when intuition says to jump !! :) :) LOL

Glad you like the Rezound - most who own it like it more and more the longer they use it ! Congrats!

Heh, point taken. I have it on good authority that the last three minutes of a four minute speed date can seem like an eternity.

No affair with iphone. The iPhone fiasco was a jump ship knee jerk reaction after my purchase of the Galaxy Nexus and listening to all my friends rave about how amazing the iPhone is. I hated the iPhone increasingly all 9 days it was in my possession. On that 9th day, I decided I could not live with such a lame beast for 2 years. The kicker was feeling a sense of pain as I packed up my Incredible to be shipped off to its new owner via ebay.

That's when I coughed up the $35, handed over the iphone, and got the rezound.

Dear Tx,
Did you say jump ship?? We'll need a high-tech paddle!!

I was fiddling around with wireless settings on my game room comfy chair, the same place where the gnex could not grab a 4G signal.... and whaddya know, not only does the 'Zound grab 4G but DLs at over 11000 kbps. Sure ain't nothin wrong with that extended battery antenna. Really I was shocked it could manage this as I never even tried 4G from this location.

Here's my final take on the situation. The Nexus has ICS. Big friggin deal. At some point in time, the Rezound will too. You can always change the software.

But the fact is you cannot change the physical characteristics of the phone. And that's where the Rezound shines. The Nexus will never have the reception that the Rezound has. No software will change that. The software might trick you into believing it does, but not even close. Go see for yourself. Have a look at the Nexus forum.

<edit for brevity>

While I think your theory about an upgraded radio may have merit, I'd beg to differ about ICS, at least in my experience. I'm running scrosler's ICS CleanROM 2.1 (ICS 4.0.1) on my Rezound, and I'm not seeing any difference in the dBm readings from when I had stock Gingerbread on it. The dBm readings are almost identical to what they were before I installed the ROM. So, I'm not sure what you're referring to, but at least in my case there is no reporting difference between GB and ICS.

Having said that, I go with the majority... they are all great phones (Rezound, Droid Razr, GNex) and you won't go wrong with any of them. I'm thrilled with my Rezound. Your mileage may vary.

*swats @ TxGoat's avatar... dammit that thing gets me every time*

I can think of only three explanations:

  1. You're operating in 3G-only mode, where ICS and earlier OSes all report 3G rather than 4G speeds
  2. Scott tweaked his CleanROM to report 3G strength even in 4G mode
  3. Solar storm, largest since 2005, causes aurora borealis over Canada, Britain - The Washington Post
