Root I could use a little refresher before flashing new ROM

I decided to finally go back to an AOSP ROM after having been on Synergy RC2 since last summer.
It's been a while since I completely switched ROM's so I was hoping you guys could help me along so this goes as smooth as possible.

I have a ton of apps that I want to make sure get transferred so that is a HUGE concern for me.

Also, if possible I would like to move my SMS messages (Go SMS) over as well as Sprint Voicemails.

I want to flash Cyanogenmod 7.1 and I already downloaded the ROM and the latest gapps.
Recovery is AmonRA and I also have a 16GB Micro SD card.

1. I am looking for the steps I need to take in order to save all my apps, sms and voicemails. I have Titanium Backup.
2. Steps to prepare phone and SD card
3. Flash ROM and kernel (what's the best kernel for CM7 for speed and battery? )
4. Restore apps, SMS and voicemail.

5. Any other "fixes' I need to flash to make everything work? e.g. GPS etc ?

6. Themes, where can I find good looking themes?

Thank you so much for your help as I know all these questions have been answered all over the place and are probably redundant. I just operate much better when I have it all in front of me without having to bounce all over links for various threads ;-)

Thanks again !!

You can backup all of your apps with titanium backup. Its much easier if you have the paid version but it can be done with the free one. Backup your voicemail app as well.

You can backup your text messages via the app mentioned in the rooting for dummies gingerbread guide.

There is nothing that needs to be done to "prepare" the SD card, but if it isnt partitioned now is a good time to do so if you have a class 6 or higher.

*************NANDROID!!!***************

Make sure to WIPE THOROUGHLY. Going from sense to AOSP and back requires this. Wipe everything except for your SD card 2-3 times and then flash the Superwipe file (once again, gingerbread for dummies guide if you need this).

Following that, flash your rom
Flash your gapps
Flash you kernel (optional)
Restore your apps

There is a GPS as well that you'll need to do.

Yep, it has 4G. I think it's better because it's basically cleaned up version of CM7. Cyanogenmod is developed for multiple devices and because of that, there are some unnecessary files here and there and some things that aren't tweaked specifically for the Evo.

Deck 1.3d is also built off the Android 2.3.5 base rather than 2.3.7. The newer version has issues with the dalvik building if you use a2sd and wipe dalvik cache. It can be annoying. Also, ShootMe is probably the best screen capture app you can get, and you can't use it on the 2.3.7 platform.

Also, I just flat out get better battery life with Deck 1.3d than I do with CM7. It's not like I get twice the battery life, but it's a little better, and every little bit counts.

If you want (again, IMHO) the best functioning Evo you can have, then here's what to flash.

The Rom - Download gingerbread evo deck zip
The Gapps - Download gapps 20110828 zip
(or the Gapps with voicemail Download gapps 20110828 zip)
The kernel - Tiamat 3.3.7 aka the LEE kernel (because it kicks ass)
-sbc version - http://downloads.tiamat-dev.com/8x50/337/Tiamat_Evo-v3.3.7-sbc.zip
-non sbc - http://downloads.tiamat-dev.com/8x50/337/Tiamat_Evo-v3.3.7.zip

Now that's your base. You also want to flash this GPS fix that will make your GPS as functional as it ever was on Sense.

That's about it. I keep coming back to this ROM. It's great.

Does this ROM have all the Superuser, SetCpu, Busybox etc. baked in?

a2sd or app2sd ?

Oh, and I only backup user apps with TB, right? No data etc ?

Yes to super user. No to set CPU but you don't need it. Go to settings, advanced settings, performance, CPU settings and you can modify your settings that way. It's all baked into the ROM.

A2sd is not built in but it works if you flash the script.

Of course I never run out of questions, lol....

I am just about ready to do this switch but paranoia is setting in :-(

I look at my SD card and there are so many folders. I think most of them are related to applications that I have installed.

Is it good enough to do a NANDROID with everything cjecked inc. SD Card, then do a TB backup User Apps +Data and finally back up SMS.

Then copy the NANDROID, TB backup and SMS backup to the PC along with my DCIM folder with my pictures and videos?

Would that cover it?

IS there a need to copy all my sd card folders to PC if I have them in my NANDROID?

Thanks !

Yes that should cover everything and yes making a backup on your PC is a good idea because a nandroid backup won't back up anything on your ad card.

I just realized that I have my 8GB card in my phone. If I take that out with all my backups on it etc. should I be able to put in my blank 16GB card, partition, put on it my ROM and scripts etc. then wipe wipe wipe and start flashing ?

If I need anything else laster I can insert my original 8GB card into my PC and connect the phone via USB to transfer anything else later?

Why do I think this is too complicated, lol. I have done this before, :(

I hope I am not driving you nuts !

you should backup your card to the computer then in your 16g card partition it (this will re-format your card and thus will wipe anything on it) then copy back your old cards content including your nandroid backups then wipe and then flash your rom. the details for partitioning is in the http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...ooting-dummies-guide-gingerbread-edition.html

I guess the reason I am wondering about copying EVERYTHING back to the new 16GB card is, will I copy unnecessary files and folders that have been created during the time I used my old ROM?

I see folders in my SD card from apps I don't even use anymore.

yeah that is fine then only nandroid backups should be ok. just make sure that you move the entire folder or else recovery will not be able to find your nandroid backups.

Did everything as explained

Wiped with Calkulin Format all, twice
Flashe ROM, GAPPS,GPSfix,Tiamant

Reboot...no settings...
Reboot again...more apps there
No phone app installed
lots of keyboard FC's

Also, why would all my gmail accounts be already there? Did it not wipe completely ?

I would partition the new card (16gig) on the phone and not in windows. Some users have experienced some problems doing it that way. So to avoid those just Partition the whole card on the phone. At moment I think I would only place the Nandroid folder and the ROM, Gapps, Superwipe, and what ever else is needed to flash after you Partition ofcourse. Then you can toggle over to the computer and copy the folders and files you know you want to have and just delete the ones you don't

you need to also wipe daldvik cache, cache, and data as well as calkulins format all. do not just rely on calkulins to do your wipes. use it in addition to wiping.

as ocn stated, you didnt wipe enough.

And I'd suggest superwipe if your going to use a script.

Manually wipe everything except for the SD card, then use superwipe if you choose to do so
