Help verizon galaxy nexus music when screen is off issues

I bought 3 galaxy nexus phones from verizon and i have issues with all three of them. The issue is that when im trying to listen to music while the screen is off, the music skips or i hear static. When the screen is on i hear the songs with no problem.I downloaded the mp3 from the android market and I use google music to listen to my music.I currently have android 4.0.2
 
Does it happen with only songs that are streaming, or even local content as well? The only thing I can think of, is that I know that when the screen is off, the phone slows down internet speeds, possibly just due to the processors scaling back on power to save on battery while the screen is off. I can see how that could potentially cause hiccups in streaming music (though I have yet to see any stuttering in Pandora, etc. But I can imagine depending on your area, if you're in a weaker or more congested market where the speeds are slower, it might make a difference). Speaking of, if it's streaming music, are you in a 3G or 4G area? Even if the phone was slowing on internet speed on 4G, it should still provide enough bandwidth to make it smooth.

If it's local content saved to the phone, then it's harder to narrow down. Maybe it's the same issue causing it, but to be honest, mine's been fine either way. Are all the files the same format, bitrate, etc? Silly questions, I know, but just trying to narrow down what could be doing it.
 
What i do is download videos using youtube downloader and convert them into mp3. Then i connect my phone to the laptop with the usb cable. I open my computer-galaxy nexus-music, and i drag the saved mp3 from my laptop to my phone. When i disconnect the phone,I open the music app and I listen to my music and it sounds fine when the screen is on. When the screen is Off the music starts to skip a little and i hear static with or without headphones. Now i used the same procedure when i load music from my laptop with other mp3 devices and ipods and the music sounds good when the screen is on or off with those devices. I downloaded a song from the android market and amazon, stored it and downloaded to my phone for offline play and both songs stutter or static when screen is off.
 
I have never experienced this, at all.

Maybe there's some other installed app that's the culprit? Battery monitors, or other apps that you really don't need that claim something on a "system" level?
 
that's weird. Any way you can check the details on files that stutter, and compare to a song that knowingly doesn't? I know it doesn't directly answer why, really, but I'm curious as to what might be the difference in them (bitrate, etc).
 
I use Google Music as well, but instead of streaming my rather extensive library, I marked it all for offline listening. It eats up some memory, but I've got 32GB to play with so no big deal... even with 9 movies and all my music on the Nexus, I still have 9GB free.

I have NO stuttering issues at all.

This is something you may want to take to a Verizon corporate store and demonstrate the static to them. It can't be normal. My 0.02 :)
 
I use google music a lot and have never experienced static or any problems with local or streaming content.
 
I thought I was going crazy when I first heard this! It's particularly noticeable when listening to spoken word recordings, like podcasts or audiobooks. It's definitely there; not stuttering, but popping and crackling when the screen is off. (Verified with both streaming and locally-loaded media, so it has nothing to do with the Internet connection.)

I noticed it first listening to a podcast in the car, so there was plenty of volume boost. It disappears when the screen is on.

For the record, I'm rooted, but am running stock.
 
Its got to be some other app interferering...

I run Pandora constantly never had a issue.


First culprits I'd look at are:

battery defenders
task killers
anti virus apps

ANYTHING that "claims" to "fix" your phone along the above lines is not needed and mostly likely causing issues...

I'd do a factory reset, load JUST the music app and see if you have issues...

I'm running a plain-vanilla build right now, with nothing special added, especially the above three culprits. It's not very noticeable when music is playing i.e, Pandora, it's incredibly noticeable with spoken voice. Load up a podcast on Listen, start playing it, then lock the screen. You'll start hearing pops and crackles. (Very noticeable in a car.)

Just loaded one up plugging into my high quality stereo, nothing whisper quite background...

My neighbors probably didn't want to listen a WSJ tech update, oh well screw them :P
 
It's an issue with the cpu throttling with the screen off. Any higher bit-rate music will cause this to happen.

I'm rooted, so I just adjusted settings with SetCPU or similar, and problem fixed.

Not sure what to do otherwise :S

I run Pandora on "high" also running Gummy ROM with the below settings.

min cpu 350mhz
governor "interactiveX" (this supposedly disables one of the cpu's when the screen is off)
 
Google's Music app works great for me. I listen to 40 min of music a day (while commuting) with screen off and no skipping. I second the app conflict notion.
 
OP, mine does the same thing. It skips with the screen off, and if I am multi-tasking with the screen on, it will skip then too.

Most of my music is ripped at 320 and I really dont think that a top tier phone should have any issue, rooted or not.
 
I have this same issue as well, crackling when the screen is turned off. Taking the headphones out and plugging them back in sometimes helps make it go away for a short while.

On another forum someone suggested using PowerAmp and upping the buffer size to large or huge, which seems to have fixed the problem. I'm not particularly technical, so not sure when the implications of this are. Can anyone explain why this might solve the issue?
 
I have this same problem.

MP3's that I purchased are local on the phone's internal storage. Some songs will skip and stutter....others won't. A song last night did it for the first half of the song but then was fine.

It's annoying and I would love to hear an answer. I've thought about buying other media players but they're like $5 and I'm cheap.
