Root Is this a reliable root website?

Yeah I see your point.
I would go for that root guide though. I trust scary alien. It wouldn't be there if it want legit.

you sure bud? i bought this phone no commitment for $340 bucks and i dont want it to brick on me haha. also i was wondering.... once it is rooted how do i uninstall the bloatware? I just want my battery to run amazing like the iphone battery

I really wish I could say that it will definitely work, but i'm sorry I can't as I don't own the device so haven't tried. But the vast majority of things on xda do as they say. If they didn't they would be taken down pretty quickly. Sorry again that I can't give a definite answer, I understand your concern as there isn't much info about rooting your phone.

yeah how come its not so much common of a phone? i would think the keyboard would be awesome. your honest opinion. Ill go with what you say ok... Should i just try it? And can i un root it if i needed too?

also bud is 7% battery loss normal in hour and 20 minutes? i swear it seems like my iphone never drained this fast. i mean all im doing is moderate texting and checked facebook once and had a 5 minute phone call.

Hold off for a bit. I'll ask some of the other staff and see what they think.

thanks bud. i realy appreciate what your doing for me. Im just so used to the iphone good battery but i love the android network so far. I dont wanna waste more money and go back to an iphone..

this site looks like it just gives you downloaded files, i believe the site may be legit, but i would scan the products you are downloading before you try anything.

why dont you try odin? it has all the things you need to root and install roms on the captivate

Scary Alien's name is in red, so I would trust what he says. And I am not being sarcastic, I can't imagine you get to be a moderator on this site by giving bogus advice. As far as rooting an Android phone, I would recommend reading about many different ways and on other forums(and I don't like recommending other forums, but in this case I do). Sometimes other folks explain the process in a way that is easier for you to understand. Make sure you follow every instruction to a tee.

Get familiar with ways to restore your phone. Bricking one's phone is usually caused by getting to a point where somehow what is happening is different than the instructions, and you push forward anyway. If you see something during the process you aren't comfortable with, stop, come back here and ask questions or check the threads to see if someone else has seen the problem. For example, when I rooted my GNex it was a batch file I ran through ADB. I had read extensively the threads and saw that occasionally it would hang and that if it did, do a battery pull and reboot and I would be fine. I was prepared for that and when it happened, I knew what to do.

I hope I helped and good luck. And remember, the first time you root an Android is the hardest:).

I only have phone access right now, so I'll give a full response later, but you should be OK worth scary aliens guide.

Hey XxventanaxX welcome to AF :D

The UnlockRoot link seems to be legit from what I can tell. I would suggest you trying to learn the more indepth method in case you need to unroot in the future ;) but if you want to try the easy method that looks safe IMO.

Odin is samsungs app that will allow you to flash things on your phone. It is useful for flashing stock firmware and you do not have to be rooted to use it IIRC.

There is a chance of something bad happening when you root a phone, but as long as you follow directions correctly you should not have any problems. Take your time and read the steps fully, ask questions if needed. Better to be sure you know what is happening than to mess something up because you jump into it. The fact that you asked about it here makes me think you will use the due diligence needed to make things happen correctly.

The guide by ScaryAlien has this link: [GUIDE] Rooting the Samsung Captivate Glide i927/i927r - xda-developers. I would personally trust that one (from xda) over the one you asked about. I don't have the phone myself :( (like others have said here), but if it is on xda it should be legit. Read the comments in the thread and see what others say. Good luck!

thanks for welcoming me bud. heres the thing buddy... i have no idea what any of that stuff means. I have been an iphone user for the last 2 years with an exception of having the htc inspire for two weeks but hating it cause of the battery.... All i want is my battery to be like the iphone and last as long with me being on youtube, texting, calling and facebook and certain aps. Is that possible?

Hey guys...just a quick heads-up and disclaimer about the guides that are referenced for the Captivate Glide...

When EP and I seeded the all-things-root areas for the devices that didn't have all-things-root guides, we added links to threads that looked helpful and relevant. We are not the authors of those guides and links, we just seeded those guides with things written by others.

The particular guide being discussed above, [GUIDE] Rooting the Samsung Captivate Glide i927/i927r - xda-developers, was referenced in this thread : http://androidforums.com/captivate-glide-all-things-root/449720-root-method.html and the members therein were the ones giving it credence, and not myself.

I don't own the device myself nor have I vetted and researched through the XDA link (although there does appear to be a lot of excellent content by member CarpeNoctem who is the OP of that XDA thread).

As always with anything root-related, do your homework and research, have a fallback plan, and any risk you assume is your own.

I'm happy to help, but I'm not an expert on that particular device.

Cheers!

edit / P.S., thank you for the kind words and references, by the way...I appreciate the confidence folks have in me, but I just wanted to make sure that everyone understood that I wasn't necessarily involved in this particular rooting effort (come see me about the HTC Droid Eris, Moto Droid X, or the Samsung Galaxy Nexus ;) :)).

now scary alien i heard from others that you are pretty reliable.... Does rooting your phone make your battery ALOT better? I basically want iPhone battery life on my android.

LOL, I pay those guys good money to say that ;) :).

Rooting in and of itself doesn't help with battery life, but it does open-up the possibility of doing other things that could help, namely underclocking or undervolting your device so that the CPU doesn't have to work so hard. You typically need to be rooted to be able to run an app that supports controlling said underclocking, etc.

In order to underclock, you need to have or install a custom kernel (that's the heart of the system: i.e., low-level software that interfaces between the hardware and the higher-level software (i.e., apps, etc.)) that supports being overclocked. Some kernels and devices also allow you to undervolt (i.e., draw less power).

Custom kernels and ROMs are a bit of a leap in comparison to just simply rooting your phone--there's quite a bit more you'll have to read and research before doing those.

All that being said, you can save a lot of battery without rooting by doing some of these things:

- use wifi whenever possible in lieu of 3G
- use 3G in lieu of 4G
- turn your display's screen brightness down
- reduce or eliminate the background syncing of your apps (like mail, Facebook, Twitter, etc.)
- don't use a task killer app (let Android manage them--he does a fine job)

Your own personal and actual usage will determine how much battery you can save--there's no magic bullet, only things that can help a little.

Hope that helps.

Cheers!

Not to be a stick in the mud, but....

Chances are rooting your phone will not improve your battery to what you'd see on the iPhone. Gaining root will give you the ability to tweak your kernel and possibly install a custom rom (although development on your phone is lacking), which will improve battery life a bit, just don't expect drastic improvements.
Android's OS operates in a way that gives you more customization and power at the cost of battery life. Most things to improve battery life can be done without rooting.

I'm all for the rooting of android phones, but don't have unrealistic expectations. You seem very concerned about bricking your phone and as you can tell there isn't going to be too much help if something does goes wrong because not many people here are familiar with your phone (we will definitely try to help though! :) ) If the process of rooting seems beyond your ability at this point, the steps needed to install custom roms/kernels can even be more challenging. Then, there is the process of attempting to fix a soft bricked phone(plus the added stress of having a non working phone).

I'd personally just recommend you invest in an extended battery or just carry an extra one.

Edit: ninja'd by SA

Just rooting won't save battery. But after you've rooted you can freeze bloatware which you don't use, which is running in the background. You could also put custom kernels on which save battery, but honesty I can't say if there are any yet.

Edit: Double ninja'd. Now that's embarrassing :D
