Considering switch back to iPhone 4...

KBourassa

Newbie
I've had this Skyrocket since Friday night. For a couple days I was impressed by all the newness and shininess and speed but now I'm finding some inadequacies that are making me consider switching back.

First off, I received a video of my nephew from my sister (who has an iPhone) and only the sound would play, no video. So she emailed it to me, but it said it couldn't download it.

Secondly, it's kind of ridiculous that I have to charge it so much or find an app to interfere with processes just to get the battery to last all day. With heavy usage (iPod playing, texting, apps ALL DAY) on my iPhone 4, I could still make it home with 40% battery, at least.

Thirdly, and this is kind of lame, but I miss my ShopShop app. Every item I added to a shopping list was put onto a master list, so that when it was shopping time, I could just go through, click on previously entered items and they will pop up on my list. I can't find anything like this on Android. I don't need stores or aisles or barcode scanning, just a simple master list to make smaller lists from.

Help? Ideas?

One of the biggest drains is the screen/display. I have had iPhones (original and 3GS) in the past and yes the battery would typically last much longer than the Androids I have had (HTC Inspire and now the SR); however, a good part of that is due to the fact that with the current iPhones available, you are dealing with a 3.5" screen and with the SR, you are talking about a 4.5" screen (about 29% larger).

The simple fact is that a screen that large is going to require more battery power to operate - I'll be very interested to see how the iPhone 5 performs battery-wise given that rumors have it coming out with at least a 4" screen (and I suspect that you still will not be able to remove the battery; therefore, you will be unable to carry a spare like you can with almost all of the current crop of Androids).

In any event, the battery life is literally the ONLY thing I miss about my old iPhones and I have more than learned to live with that (though I do work from home so I have a solid Wifi connection all day and chargers whenever I want them - but even when I am gone most of the day, I have never run into a problem where my battery died and I was without a phone).

Both of my parents have the iPhone 4S and I can hardly stand looking at that screen anymore now that I am used to the larger ones.

To me personally, the customization possibilities (and I don't even begin to use nearly all of them) and the larger screen are well worth the shortened battery life. Again though, that is simply my opinion...

Well I did find a great grocery app (except it has ads at the top...) and I guess I can buy a car charger (my 3GS had terrible battery life, I got spoiled by the iPhone 4) but I still don't know how to fix my video message problem.

I have read the entire ex iPhone users thread, yes. It seems we are all in a similar boat. We love the phone, but the battery is an issue.

I'm still wanting to know why a video message wouldn't work. That seems kind of like a fundamental part of texting now, like sms or pics.

I have moved about 30 people from iphone to android. I once was an iphone guy. The problem is you have to unlearn and relearn. If you started from Android, it would have been a lot easier. You have learned the way Apple wants you do do things. IOS is a simple OS, where Android gives you the freedom to make it how you want.

Here is the important parts I tell people moving from Iphone to a Android phone.

1. Day 1-2 is pure joy. You got a new shinny phone and its great.
2. Day 3-3rd week HELL, you now realized that this is way different and its way more complicated. Just remember that you are having to UNLEARN and RELEARN!
3. Week 4. This is when it all gets better. You have figured it out and you more comfortable with your device.

This is so true, i was the same when i got my skyrocket. I wanted to go back to my 4s but then i just got used to it and learned how android works. The battery issue is what sometimes annoys me but juice defender app helps a lot.

I don't know what you guys mean by bad battery life but reality check...the iPhone battery life sucks just as much and it's NOT user replaceable. If you have the guts and the skills go ahead and open the 4S and you'll see a no-name made in china battery. At least the samsung one is made in south korea by samsung. Go ahead and check the official apple forums and you'll see a mil threads about people bitching of the battery life. My macbook pro which is pretty brand new lasts like 8 hrs with light use...what do you really expect from a phone? perhaps we should have smartphones ran by nuclear batteries...that way they could last for years. Just my two cents. iPhone is just as sucky and I have both.

I came from a Blackberry and my battery lasted 2 days if i wanted to, but charged it every night and it was above 50% everyday.. but that's that..

before Rooting my phone lasted about 10 hours on heavy use..

after rooting and running a custom ROM with Custom kernel i am getting 18hrs + with heavy use..

my screen brightness is set to 50%

but i know that a lot of people don;t like rooting and i do understand why you wouldn't want to charge all the time..

but u win some and you lose some when u switch to a new platform... i miss a lot of things about my blackberry as my personal daily..

plus the restrictions iphone has to itunes is just absolutely STUPID.. so just that in itself i would never get an iphone.

but to each their own.. use the device perfect for you.. if that means switching back to an iphone then do it, it'll probably make you happier then trying to settle with being ok with something you ur not 100% happy with

The battery issues always amaze me, weird that people think they can run all day on a single charge. Every Iphone I had which is all of them had an issue with the battery.

The SR battery just like every other battery gets better over time, I was getting about 5 hours out of a charge when I first got the phone now I'm getting close to 8 hours out of it.

I also purchased an extra battery and slimline charger from Amazon $37 delivered, so if you like the SR buy an extra battery.

I use the stock task manager and when I'm done using the phone go in and exit out of everything that is running.

We easily get 12 hours or more out of our skyrockets with heavy usage.

I have seen as much as 24 from a friend on a pretty much stock phone.

I can turn off the data radios and go for days

As for video...try mx video from the market. android phones do not play .mov files without an app.

It still concerns me u could not get the movie to play from a pc either...that doesn't really point to it being a phone issue but more a video issue

My skyrocket lasts anywhere from 14-19 hours on a charge with fairly decent usage.

I charge every night because what else am I doing while sleeping? I've never really had to worry about the phone just suddenly dying, and I enjoy my skyrocket more and more everyday. No going back to iPhone for me.

That's pretty funny and makes sense. I went from an AT&T Windows 7 Phone (piece of crap) Nov 2010, then a free upgrade to an Atrix Mar 2011 and today a free upgrade to this Samsung Galaxy S2 Skyrocket due to misinformation of the Atrix and 4G LTE capability by our local store. I'm used to Android now, hoping to be satisfied with this phone, I really like it thus far compared to the Atrix.

I guess I had a special iPhone battery, but like I said, I could play music and text all day on a full charge and still end up with 50% at the end of the day.

I could get my video message to play from a computer, but NOT from my phone, whether opened through SMS OR EMAIL.

I'm also noticing lines on the screen when I keep it turned down all the way, and have been noticing others have this issue.

As of late, I have also been getting super annoyed because I'll send an SMS, then it says it fails, but the person gets it because they respond, so I end up sending it again just to get the notification to go away. I'm also receiving some texts twice. I use the stock messaging app.

We are in the exact same boat! I went in to upgrade to the new iPhone 4S and the guy talked me into this Samsung Skyrocket --- I like the bigger screen since I'm getting older *yikes* --- but I cannot believe how bad the battery life sucks. I charged it all night, woke up this morning and went to the gym. I didn't even use the phone and after 90 minutes it was down 30% battery life already. I feel like I have it charging more than not. I took it back to ATT and got a new battery, so we'll see if that helps. I really need this phone to be reliable when I do the 3-Day this year --- so I will be walking, taking pictures, posting to facebook for about 8 hours a day and I don't want it to be dead the whole time.

SHOPSHOP!!! I LOVE this app and trust me, I tried every single android app trying to fine one I loved just as much -- and I finally did. It's called "Out of Milk" and when you clear the items, they do go into a history and you can add items back from that list too. I actually paid for the upgrade too and now I can build all mylists on the website and sync it to my phone -- which is easier than typing on the phone for me. Give it a try!

I actually downloaded a free one called "OurGroceries" that makes a master list and will automatically sync between phones that have it downloaded, like if I add something to a list, it'll add it to my husband's phone too. I tried Out Of Milk and didn't like it too much.

I went back to the store Saturday and exchanged my black one for the white one, and my battery life seems better, my screen doesn't have weird scrolling lines anymore, and it just seems to function better overall.

I've been heavily texting since 7 a.m., about 7.5 hours now, and it's only down to 65%. I bought a car charger and it also helps give it that extra bump when I'm driving between places.

If you're going to be out doing a 3-day, maybe get a solar charger. They're neato.

I have heard the iPhone 4s battery also is TERRIBLE.

Overall, since switching to the white skyrocket, I love this phone WAY MORE now.

ditto that! in my 4th week and i'm feeling the love for this phone

I have that problem and many others.
Turns on by it self, speaker goes on automatically
Droid comes up when I try to turn it off and says downloading
I am trading it in for an iphone

Haven't had any issues with my skyrocket..... Regret is yours if you switch back to iphone on missing awesome functionality of android. Good luck

I am doing a lot better with the Skyrocket now, except noticing that certain websites won't open (like my college online course website) but will open on my hubby's iPhone. I am receiving duplicate texts and apparently sending them as well. Any ideas??

Longtime iphone user, now have a skyrocket for about 1 week.

I just ordered larger capacity batteries (2) for my skyrocket - something that was not possible on the iphone!!!!!

I ordered a separate battery charger too! This will resolve all my battery issues... I don't mind keeping an extra battery around, like I normally do with every other device which uses rechargeable batteries. Like one poster said iphone users are so used to doing things the apple way we have to unlearn and relearn!

I think I AM going to switch back. Too many little buggy problems. Just going to wait for iPhone 5. I am sick of constantly getting texts from people twice, them telling me they are receiving my texts twice and in my house the iPhone just has better reception for internet and the like.

Sorry Android, I tried, but too many bugs and little annoyances, that I can't find any help for!
