ok cool. i am currently re-writing the guide now. not sure how you want to do this but there is a 3rd method rather then using the HTCdev or captain's method. actually captain throwback brought this new method to my attention. it is called TacoRoot. it basically uses and exploit found in the recovery.log. it is only a temp root and you will need to use the captain's guide to downgrade your phone to hboot 2.10 and use unrevoked to fully root you. it is actually a fairly easy process really. i can walk you through it now or you can wait til i'm done and use it on your other evo.

Well.. I have the latest OTA so I guess I'll need to use his guide. Yes walk me through it...If you have some time...

well there is TacoRoot and then there is the Captain's method. but with the captain's method you will need your bootloader unlocked by either HTCdev or TacoRoot.

so far the guide goes into HTCdev and then the Captain's guide. which one would you like to try? TacoRoot is new to me, but i think i have a full grasp of it.

I just type in the commands in cmd. Time to close it?

you will need the command window to use the captain's guide. we needed a custom recovery to flash the su file which gives permission to alter the system partitions which is what we will need to do next. so the next part will be in command window.

actually go ahead and reboot your phone now if you have not already and set it as usb debugging and connect your phone to the pc as charge only.
