This worked, finally! I made some dumb mistakes, including the "tools in the wrong folder" bit. I used the zip program, found the folder in the "download" folder, moved it to "root" and extracted there. The resulting folder is named "Tools" and if you don't see it in your root the DroidHelper steps won't work.
I did find the 99.2b file elsewhere (I was toying with using SDK etc. to do it, then decided no way was I going to start messing with Eclipse, etc. Bleh. A little beyond me.) and I was able to use it by renaming it 99.1b and sticking it in the Tools folder.
I ran into a big problem when I finally got around to doing the update.zip and my battery ran out of juice. I was a little worried I bricked my phone for a moment (why won't it turn on????). So don't do this with a low battery, duh.
It might be helpful to have this link to Pete's work as all the sholes and alldroid links seem to not be working: Index of /pete (Thanks earlier poster).
Also, I couldn't find Helper in the marketplace last night when I wanted to re-install it. Weird huh? And on that note, a final tip is that Astro file manager has a nice app backup utility in case you don't want to lose your apps/non-market stuff.
