Root From stock 2.0.1 to Bugless Beast ROM (For beginners)

This worked, finally! I made some dumb mistakes, including the "tools in the wrong folder" bit. I used the zip program, found the folder in the "download" folder, moved it to "root" and extracted there. The resulting folder is named "Tools" and if you don't see it in your root the DroidHelper steps won't work.

I did find the 99.2b file elsewhere (I was toying with using SDK etc. to do it, then decided no way was I going to start messing with Eclipse, etc. Bleh. A little beyond me.) and I was able to use it by renaming it 99.1b and sticking it in the Tools folder. :)

I ran into a big problem when I finally got around to doing the update.zip and my battery ran out of juice. I was a little worried I bricked my phone for a moment (why won't it turn on????). So don't do this with a low battery, duh.

It might be helpful to have this link to Pete's work as all the sholes and alldroid links seem to not be working: Index of /pete (Thanks earlier poster).

Also, I couldn't find Helper in the marketplace last night when I wanted to re-install it. Weird huh? And on that note, a final tip is that Astro file manager has a nice app backup utility in case you don't want to lose your apps/non-market stuff.

Sounds right to me. RootHelper has 99.1b, not 99.2b. You're rooted, now on to the next step!

Thanks for that. And thanks for the link to Pete's work. Which file should I use? I want to use the regular bugless beast and when you click on that you get V1, V1.1 and V1.2.

Update: I tried V1.2 and there are two files. a RAR file and an update zip file. Neither of which give me a folder that looks like what I created during my Nandroid back up. Am I missing something?

UGH. Ok, so I have bugless beast nandroid backup in the nandroid folder on my SD card. When I reboot in recovery I dont have the option to do a backup/restore. It says E;Cant open/cache/recovery/command.

If you don't see an option for restore, it doesn't sound like you have Recovery running but the regular reboot menu. Do you see a gold droid image in the background? Can you make a backup? If not then you have to the Recovery installed first and plus you WANT to make a backup of your current freshly rooted install. Seriously.

Oh boy. Well I think I got it loaded. I had to reflash through roothelper. Up and running. Thanks for the help.

Is this supposed to have the keyboard from the N1 with the mic? Also, the voice recognition feature keeps crashing.

Ok, the mic is there for entering text which is very cool. But voice search is busted. Keeps crashing. Anyone else notice this?

Which files is it that allows you to boot in to recovery? Are they in the tools folder or in the droidroothelper app? I was able to make a nandroid backup, but after i removed the backup and put the BB in the nandroid folder, I was unable to get to recovery. instead it just boots me to the standard recovery. i've tried reinstalling droidroothelper, and did get the tools again, but neither have worked. Any ideas? Thanks

Yeah, thats exactly what happened to me. I had to go back into droidroothelper, and went through the steps below;

1. "Mount mtdblock3 System read/write"
2. "Install an chmod busybox"
3. "Install and chmod flash_image"
4. scroll to bottom and hit " Flash 99.2b recovery"
5. "Unmount System mtdblock3"
6. "Sync"
7. "Reboot Recovery

When I rebooted in recovery I was then able to restore from the BB that I put on the SD card.

This has been mentioned a few times in this thread already. garment69, you are doing it right, but you're missing one step. Between steps 4 and 5 you have to hit "Rename recovery-boot.p" or something that sounds like that. I don't remember the exact name. This prevents the system from reflashing the default recovery image over yours every time it starts up.

Thanks man, that worked. It's amazing having the capabilities to root, install roms, and overclock without ever having to connect to a computer.

I guess it would be a good idea to go through the process again and be sure to include that step, in case I ever run in to a problem.

So just switched from Sholes BB to Pete's Bugless Beast. Sholes had the WiFi tether hotspot app. Anything like this for Pete's?

Yep, it's included with the BBeast ROM. In most cases, I think. I still use 0.7.5 because frankly, Pete's new stuff is terrible, and it came with it preinstalled.

i finally got it to work. I just messed up on one step :p

I've been searching for wireless tethering but i cant find it anywhere.
Can someone please link me to the thread or site.

I just rooted and got everything ready for a ROM. Can I go straight from the rooted 2.0.1 to the BB v.9 if I just use the update.zip? Or do I have to change my kernel or something along those lines? Sorry couldn't find a concrete answer anywhere really.

No do a full nandroid back up to the ESE53 from a 2.0.1 ROM

Hold on I'll find you the proper link

http://www.androidoverdrive.com/pete/ESE53/V0.8/
the BDS file is the nandroid backup

Nandroid Backup Installation Instructions:

-Update (if available) all of your apps before installing
-Backup any files you wish to restore, this will wipe /data
-Extract the files from the archive using WinRAR or a similar program
-Place the extracted folder (the ROM) into the "nandroid" folder on your sdcard
-Reboot into recovery mode
-Wipe data/factory reset (TWICE)
-Wipe cache partition (TWICE)
-Backup/Restore
-Advanced Nandroid Restore
-Choose backup (select the ROM)
-Perform Restore
-Enjoy!
now you can do the update.zip to v0.9

I'm sorry I don't exactly understand...do I just extract the 3 files from the link into my nandroid folder and then restore that nandroid?

Yes you extract the file but KEEP the 3 files in the folder named "BDS-21010312-453" and move that folder into the folder named "nandroid" on your sd card

then do the wipes and then advanced nandroid restore select all the option pick the back up image and then restore it.
