Root [Revised] Rooting Gingerbread 2.3.5 Dummies Guide

I've returned 2 phones in the past 3 months and was able to unroot to the condition they gave them to me in.... that's why I'm curious. I doubt I'll be able to get a watermarked HBOOT back, but I doubt they look at that (I know my store doesn't), unless they do back at the factory and then could make a note or something...

Is there an unroot guide coming to get phones back to stock with HBOOT 2.18? or doesn't it matter for returns under service & repair what HBOOT you have?
The last step of any unrooting guide is to flash a stock ROM, and since we have the stock ROM that includes it, you could of course use that version to have the latest update if submitting your device for repairs.

However, Sprint doesn't usually care what ROM or HBOOT version your phone has - some techs wouldn't even bother checking it. Some don't even care if you're rooted.

It depends on what Hboot version you currently have on your phone. I'm not entirely sure there is an unroot guide for 2.18. If you followed the optional guide to get the 2.10 hboot without the watermark, there is an unroot guide for that hboot for sure. :)

Boot your phone into recovery and post back what hboot you have. We'll get you pointed to the correct guide.

Edit: That'll learn me, I need to refresh brfore I post! lol :)

Yeah, unroot guide for the 2.18 HBOOT is essentially steps 5-11 of my "S-OFF" guide. Step 11 is the one where you flash the Froyo RUU, but if you're returning the device for service and you want it to have the latest update, all you have to do is replace that ROM with the 4.67 version. The HBOOT will be 2.18 & locked, and the device will be S-ON and unrooted.

ahhh yes good point. i actually will add that into the guide later.
Cool. It will only apply for people that unlocked using the HTCDev.com method, but did not complete the steps to get S-OFF. In any other case, an unroot method already exists (unrEVOked, Revolutionary).

Ok so this should give me root access to my phone? Anyone has had bricked a phone doing this?

I will give it a try .... but I just want to make sure this is tested several times.

Thanks for the guide
:o
I've probably unlocked my phone 10 times using HTC's method, and I've done the Tacoroot method at least twice. I've gone from S-OFF to S-ON and back again more times than I can count, and my device is fine. If you have any issues or get stuck anywhere, we're here to help.

Do I need to have s-off to utilize wifi tethering?
You need to be rooted to use it (unless you pay for it). If you have the latest stock ROM, and the unlocked bootloader, then you can be S-ON, and still rooted. In the case of any previous software versions, yes, you would need to be S-OFF to use it, as the rooting method includes making your phone S-OFF.

Since the post, I have gone through your unlocking the bootloader method. I am about to run Unrevoked.

Hey!
Im new to this forum, found it by googleing Evo 4g root.

I've read through much of the process on rooting. I was at the 4th step of the HTCDev way of rooting, where I copy the Adb.dll and fastboot files onto the Android folder, when I read on a link to a different thread that there was an OTA update that makes Hboot 2.18.0001, Which is what I have.

I verified this by holding power and volume down and checking the Hboot version and it indeed is 2.18.0001. Am I able still root my phone? All I want to root my phone for is to remove the bloat ware and use the wifi tether app.
Help please. Thanks!

Yes you can will need to use this guide. At the the moment. There is no other way to root for it other then the methods listed. With your Hboot.

the command should be open to wherever you have the android folder at. it should be where you have the adb file and fastboot file. you should have the folder already setup when you unlocked the bootloader. move the img file over to that folder. it should be named android. then on the folder press shift then right click on the folder and select the open command window here option.

Yeah I have bootloader completely installed

ok so if you have the bootloader unlocked, you should have the android folder that was setup in the process, correct?

1.if so download the amon ra 2.3 file and extract the recovery image file over to the android folder.
2.next press and hold shift and right click on the folder
3.select open command window(3rd or 4th option)
4.in the command window type:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img

you should now have amon ra2.3 on your phone.
