So I woke up to an update for the Samsung Prevail. I accepted it and now the phone stays stuck in the Boost Mobile screen.

I tried using Odin but my phone doesn't appear. My computer doesn't recognize my phone at all. Why? Maybe because I never kept my phone in USB debugging mode.

There's no hope right? I tried going into that system recovery mode, wiping the cache and reformatting the phone. Nothing helps.

Please help me. I don't feel like buying a new phone.

can you put your phone into recovery mode before using odin?
Phone is in recovery mode

Note: The recovery mode I'm talking about is accessed by booting the phone, holding power and volume up (or down, I forget which).

I have never used Odin. When I plug in my phone, windows gives me the "Device not recognized" bullcrap. I have the Samsung USB drivers installed because I rooted this phone before.

Grrrr!!!! Help

i had a similar problem with my phone it was stuck on its start up screen so im trying to figure out your situation and see if i can help.

the recovery mode you talking sounds right, should have a picture of an android at work sign.

As for odin, what version are you using?

I'm using 4.43 Odin. The reason my phone isn't booting (which you may have figured out from the first post) is because my phone wasn't in USB debugging mode when I last used it. This sucks. Is there a way I can apply an update through the microSD card?

For Odin, Vol DOWN + camera + power until you see a yellow 'downloading' screen... Then Odin well recognize it ;)

It's in the downloading screen. The PHONE HAS TO BE IN USB DEBUGGING MODE. MY PHONE WASN'T IN DEBUGGING MODE WHEN IT WAS WORKING, HENCE THE "USB DEVICE NOT RECOGNIZED MESSAGE"

Still not working. It's in downloading mode as I type this.

Doesn't odin. Need the right drivers, I'll look if it does... Wait it does. It needs the Samsung drivers for phones. Look for them online and you should be able to find them

I have those installed.

I rooted my phone so you can imply that I have the Samsung USB drivers installed on my computer.

If there's no way to fix this, I am going to buy a new phone. Just when my phone was getting better from its crappy battery, I update it in hopes for a new GUI. Yeah, looks like the new GUI is the Boost screen. This sucks a lot. 200 dollars down the drain.

If you can't fix it, Samsung will repair or for free under factory warranty

I don't even have the receipt or when it was purchased (like in the summer of 2011).

This really does suck. I can't even find "Samsung Prevail" on the samsung website. Pitiful.

Sigh, USB debugging mode has noting to do with recovery mode or the download mode.

USB debugging mode is the running of ADBD on the phone side. It is the daemon server for Android Debug Bridge (ADB)

ODIN operates in the Download mode and is a different protocol than ADB

Your problem lies with not having the drivers installed correctly

Reinstall the drivers
If that doesn't work, Try another USB port
If that doesn't work, Try a better USB cable
If that doesn't work, Try with another computer
If that still doesn't work, Send it to Samsung, they'll use ODIN on it with their known working configuration, if it doesn't work for them, they'll replace parts till it does

agreed!!!:d

Not to be picky and it probably does not make a difference anyway, but I know that it is important to use the proper version of ODIN.

You stated that you are using ODIN 4.43.

Unless I am mistaken, the version that comes with most of the ODIN downloads for the Prevail has been 4.42

I see that the newest Kouma image for FA19 does use 4.43 so this will probably not make any difference.

Usually, this error DOES mean that your SAMSUNG drivers need to be re-installed. I have had the same thing happen in the past and that was the culprit.

Also, try a different USB cable. It may still charge but not allow data access. They CAN go bad in this way. I have also had this happen.

Try other USB ports. Much less likely, but possible.

Try another Computer. This seems to work quite often. Strangely enough, an older XP computer is sometimes better than a newer Windows 7 box.

I have done this last one also.

All of these things can go wrong. Just troubleshoot them one at a time and do not give up yet.

ODIN is a lifesaver.

I thought that was the case.
And lol @ making Samsung Odin it for you

they are pretty fast tho, i think from the time i shipped it (ups ground, Michigan to Texas... At their expense) was ~10 days...

lastly, if you uninstall the drivers and let windows search for them when it prompts it will find and install them correctly... For me it installed drivers several times... In recovery mode, in dl mode and in mass storage mode... Hope you get it up n runnin... If not Samsung definitely well fix it... Their shitty update caused the problem

Hmm, I'll try the different cables. My roommates have the same phone :D

Also, what version of ODIN do you recommend? Sorry for the late response. I have class in the morning.

which buttons are you using for recovery mode? you said that in recovery you formatted cache, etc...

that's not the mode you need for odin. vol down+pwr+camera will/should give you yellow "downloading..." screen.

Then I guess my phone has officially died then. I tried it using 3 different cables, 7 different USB ports, 2 computers.

Nope. If only there was a way to place an official update by samsung on my SD Card and go into Android Recovery and start the update. If only :(

Sure there is, you get the update zip from someone who pulled it from their /cache directory. you rename it to update.zip and put it in the root directory of your SD card
You boot into stock recovery and pick apply update.zip

that's how I went from EJ06 to FA19
