Root Annoying System Update

Joe G

Newbie
So, I've got the nag screen on my phone now that I have a System Update ready to be installed.

I remember doing this once before while rooted with disastrous results. Can someone please prep me on what I need to do to keep everything the way it is while updating? Or will nothing work with the new update?

I'm really clueless... it's been a while.

Thanks!

You can ODIN to the stock rooted image with the new FA19 update. The thread is usually always on the 1st page in the all things root section. I updated and reinstalled CTmod in about 20mins. Just make sure you make a backup with CWM and follow the instructions.

I know that if you are not on unrooted stock you may brick your phone if you apply this update.

If you are rooted but you want to try out the new modem, I recommend using Odin to install Koumas Rooted CWM image.

That is what I did and it is working fine for me, although some others are having 3g performance issues with it.

I assume that if you are completely stock the update will work, but I am not sure.

I'm definitely not stock. I'm running Kouma Kernel with CTMod (older version 4.3, I think?)

I've read the issues about people getting stuck at the Boost load screen when trying to upgrade. I was going to backup using CWM, return to stock, then upgrade. But, when I restore my CWM backup, will it restore with the upgrade still applied?

Even if that works out, the version of CTMod I have probably won't work with whatever I'm upgrading to. I'll try what VoltronMaximus suggested and see how that works out. Seems to be the safest bet.

If I were you , I would re-install everything from the beginning . I originally used CWM after installing FA19 but eventually went back and started from scratch . It takes a little longer but at least I know everything is installed the correct way.

That's what I decided to do. I'm using ODIN to go to stock rooted Gingerbread with CWM and then installing the updated version of CTMod, etc from scratch. It's about time I got up-to-date with everything, anyways.

I've never tried CM before... maybe I'll try that.

One more thing , I noticed severe 3g lag and huge fluctuation in signal strength with FA19 . I switched back to EJ06 and use AutoStarts to block the update . My 3g is much better and my signal is constant now between -91 - 96dBm's .
I was losing signal entirely w/ the new FA19 update.

No I still had a Sprint prl when I odined the new modem. I switched back though. My Phone did not like the update

I keep getting "cannot open the usb serial port. code: 5" when trying to use ODIN. I've tried multiple USB ports and I installed the Samsung USB drivers included with the zip file.

I can't find a straight answer on how to fix it -- so I gave up.

I think I had that happen to me once. Make sure your phone is powered off, then put phone into download mode, then connect the USB to the PC, then open up ODIN. You should also remove the SD card. Another quick thing to make sure the USB drivers are installed properly is does the PC recognize the phone when you are at the phones home screen? Like if you were trying to transfer music or pics.

PS- Instead of using the EJ06 rooted image, you should use the FA19 rooted image because that's the one with the current update. Also I know that the latest CTmod 3.1.2
does work with the FA19 update.

Yeah, when I go to USB devices in my Device Manager, I see "Samsung Android USB Device" in the list. I turn off my phone and go into the screen where it says, "Downloading..." in yellow. Then, I plug my phone into the PC via USB with no SD Card or battery. I open ODIN, it detects it's on COM 8 and it says everything is okay. Then, I select the files and click Start... 6 seconds later it says it couldn't connect.

I downloaded the FA19 rooted image, so that's what I'm using. I'm going to try from home tonight because I'm at work right now and I don't have enough time to do anything before I go home.

I remember having this problem last time with ODIN, but I forget how I fixed it. Hopefully, my home computer will make things easier on me. I think my laptop dock at work is causing issues possibly.

Are you selecting the OPS file ?

Also , I don't know about you but I never remove my battery or SDcard unless I'm running a BATCH file . Even then , i don't remove my battery .

Yep... I was going to post this in the other post:

1. Turn phone off.
2. Go to yellow "Downloading..." screen.
3. Plug phone into USB cable.
4. Remove SD Card and battery (for good measure).
5. Open ODIN -- detected on COM 8.
6. Load up OPS, Phone, PDA... click Start.
7. 6 seconds later, "Cannot open the usb serial port. Code: 5"

I saw in the ODIN post that someone fixed the issue by doing that -- I figured it would help. Obviously, it didn't. :p

Hmmm , never had that happen . Hopefully it will work on your home PC . Check back and see if anyone else has encountered this issue and might have posted their results .

I've never had any issues with Odin as long as I follow the directions lol . The only problem I had was when I forgot to use the OPS file . I wish I could help ya a little more but I'm stumped .

I can't return my phone back to stock because my charging port on my phone is busted. Wont connect USB to the computer. Is there any way to dismiss this update or return to stock unrooted without the great ODIN?

That's it. Just install Autostarts. Open it, select AFTER STARTUP., then select GOOGLE SERVICE FRAMEWORK (there should be 4of them) then:D select the one that has the word UPDATE In the name. It was the third 1 down on my phone . Just disabled. It.

This is a paid app.

I rooted my phone with Shabbypenguin's one-click instructions. After that I did not install any custom ROM but I installed a lot of apps. Is it still unsafe to accept the update? Is there a way to get the update without removing my data and apps?
