Eris to v2.x, when?

@ NKT,

Hey man hows it goin today. Just thought I'd see if you could possibly answer this for me, if not I totally understand. When you received the 2.1 update for testing, did they give you any clues as to when they hypthetically might be wrapping up the test stages if all goes well? [I know the ota failed a while ago, but lets pretend that didnt happen ;-)] Forgive me if this is a dumb Q, I am unfamiliar with the testing of consumer electronics. Also dude, whatever happened a few weeks ago when that guy PM'd you about possibly getting 2.1 off ur phone and having root shortly thereafter? I assume since we never heard about it here that it didn't fly... Can you confirm this?

Thank you sir.

They keep the date pretty hidden from the testers.

As for 2.1 and root, I have no knowledge of anything happening with that. So yea, that didn't fly...

NKT,

One more question for you and I promise I'll leave you in peace. :) Have you tested any Exchange Activesync functionality? One of my big pet peaves when using the built in mail program is that it doesn't organize the folders very well for my Exchange account. I was wondering if this was addressed in the update.

Thanks!

No, I don't use Exchange. Just POP3/IMAP.

Sorry.

NKT:

You've seen the hype surrounding 2.1 on this board. From what you've seen so far, is it really something worth getting excited about? There are so many extra features that are more like amenities, like turn-by-turn navigation and being open to more apps that are 1.6 and above only. What about the functionality of the phone? You addressed the lag and battery, but what about the ergonomics of menus? Is making a call a frivolously long process? Are menus a bit nicer, such as maybe icons in said menus just to help identify the options, rather than just reading the text?

I saw the video on Android's website about 2.1 in general, but is there anything that Sense adds that makes it look different, such as menus? For example, the current difference between Home and Sense now.

Does anyone know if, when we do finally get 2.1, we decide to do a factory reset, if it will reset to 1.5 or reset to the "defined 2.1" (whatever that may be) defaults?

Functionally, the phone runs similar to 1.5. There is a little speed up, but it's unclear how much of that is the result of the reset or the new OS. The OS menus are nicer in that they added pretty icons and made it a bit easier to know where you're going.

The added Leap feature is fun to play with and makes switching home screens fast. The pinch-zoom on it wore off after about a day. Now I just hit home twice and it brings up Leap. Pick the screen and go. Very nice...

Is 2.1 an orgasm-inducing piece of software? No.

But it changes just enough and adds the 2.1 app functionality to a lower cost phone that makes it a great intro phone.

Are you permitted to post about any bugs you've detected, or anything else you've had to report back to them about?

Or (*coff-coff*), does it seem ready to roll out?

I haven't noted any bugs. But I'm not testing all the features (Exchange for example).

In my opinion it's pretty close to final. I don't see any changes coming down from what's being tested and what will be OTA'd.

There's a lot of subtlety and secrecy in the process.

That's hilarious! NKT..thanks for fielding the questions man...your answers are about the best of anything positive I've read on here in a long time. I'm not expecting a miracle OS but glad to get your take from someone who is actively using 2.1.

2.1/this forum is becoming like a drug. i have to check it everyday to see what is new in the world of android. and NKT is like the drug dealer...we just need more of what he knows about 2.1

I heard that BigRed was pushing the update OTA this morning but there was a problem and ended up screwing up 3G for a while......

they've already had problems with the server not accepting 2.1
this could theoretically could be why the 3g network was down. Maybe they just shut it down and tried uploading it that way.
is the time near . . .
is 2.1 ready to roll out???

do I need to post Tommy Lee Jones again??

My son in law and I got our Eris phones on Dec. 24th. They said in the store we would get the upgrade "soon". Well we all know how that's gone. Anyway my son in law emailed HTC a few times asking, and yesterday they returned his email saying we will be getting V2.1 and not 2.0 and that it would be very close to the end of March.

Now that I can believe whether your son in law got the email or now. ;)

Woo, that feels like new information. </sarcasm>

Isn't that what we already knew, just rephrased to be new sounding? Q1 2010 has been established for a while... right?
