this is a little long, so skip to the TL;DR at the bottom if you want to be spared the details.
i've had my Evo since last June, and after 2 defective units, i finally ended up with a decent [white] one. i stayed stock until about a week ago, when i decided it was time to go the way of the root, for a variety of reasons:
1) i wanted to remove the bloatware (Sprint Football, Nascar, NOVA, Amazon MP3, etc).
2) i was looking for something maybe slightly more responsive than the stock HTC ROM. it's pretty good but i suppose it could be better when flicking through screens.
3) i was looking for better performance, in terms of gaming. i got the last humble bundle and i've been playing Osmos HD on my HTC Evo View, and it runs great on that, but on the Evo 4G, it lags pretty badly. i'd say on some busy screens, it drops to ~10 FPS, which to me is unplayable.
4) i was wondering if i could get slightly better battery life, even though mine was already pretty great as it is. i live in DC and my 3G connection is pretty solid in most places, including at home, and with the screen off, it might drop only ~3 or 4% overnight (from ~11pm - 6am).
i rooted via the 2.3.5 dummies guide, which was awesome, and i immediately removed most of the crap programs, so #1 is taken care of.
next, i flashed a couple different ROMs. i tried MikG first, due to its almost universal acclaim, but it broke Swype. for me, that alone was a dealbreaker. i need Swype. it is the only way i will input text. however, i was pretty happy with other aspects of it. the idea of having CIQ gone was also appealing. Osmos HD did not play any better or worse. battery life seemed to be about the same, over 2 days. i set up SetCPU but honestly, almost all the profiles made it more laggy at all times. might have been an issue with the kernel. so...i'm looking for other suggestions.
i don't need custom, flashy themes, but a UI tweak here or there would be okay. i lean more on the side of keeping things simple and clean.
TL;DR: EVO owner for the past 9 months, rooted a week ago, want a ROM that is slightly snappier, slightly better performing (in games), and has slightly better battery life than stock, while not breaking anything that works on stock.
