this is a little long, so skip to the TL;DR at the bottom if you want to be spared the details.

i've had my Evo since last June, and after 2 defective units, i finally ended up with a decent [white] one. i stayed stock until about a week ago, when i decided it was time to go the way of the root, for a variety of reasons:

1) i wanted to remove the bloatware (Sprint Football, Nascar, NOVA, Amazon MP3, etc).
2) i was looking for something maybe slightly more responsive than the stock HTC ROM. it's pretty good but i suppose it could be better when flicking through screens.
3) i was looking for better performance, in terms of gaming. i got the last humble bundle and i've been playing Osmos HD on my HTC Evo View, and it runs great on that, but on the Evo 4G, it lags pretty badly. i'd say on some busy screens, it drops to ~10 FPS, which to me is unplayable.
4) i was wondering if i could get slightly better battery life, even though mine was already pretty great as it is. i live in DC and my 3G connection is pretty solid in most places, including at home, and with the screen off, it might drop only ~3 or 4% overnight (from ~11pm - 6am).

i rooted via the 2.3.5 dummies guide, which was awesome, and i immediately removed most of the crap programs, so #1 is taken care of.

next, i flashed a couple different ROMs. i tried MikG first, due to its almost universal acclaim, but it broke Swype. for me, that alone was a dealbreaker. i need Swype. it is the only way i will input text. however, i was pretty happy with other aspects of it. the idea of having CIQ gone was also appealing. Osmos HD did not play any better or worse. battery life seemed to be about the same, over 2 days. i set up SetCPU but honestly, almost all the profiles made it more laggy at all times. might have been an issue with the kernel. so...i'm looking for other suggestions.

i don't need custom, flashy themes, but a UI tweak here or there would be okay. i lean more on the side of keeping things simple and clean.

TL;DR: EVO owner for the past 9 months, rooted a week ago, want a ROM that is slightly snappier, slightly better performing (in games), and has slightly better battery life than stock, while not breaking anything that works on stock.

I'm not by any means a pro, but I thought I'd help where I can.

I had the same issue with Swype. I uninstalled and reinstalled then had no issues. If this doesn't fix it for you try uninstalling then wipe cache and dalvik cache then reinstall Swype.

A GREAT tweak can be found here. Flash in recovery and follow instructions. This helped me big time. It improves performance greatly.

For battery life, try a different kernel. If you're still on MikG, Anthrax works great for pretty much everybody. But every Evo responds to kernels differently. What works for someone might not work for someone else. I like the smartass governor the most, great performance and not too bad on battery life. But if you switch to powersave (WILL make you phone VERY laggy) while you sleep you'll lose almost 0 battery life. I listen to music for literally 8 hours straight with the powersave governor and lose about 7% battery.

Other things that help battery. Turn off mobile data & auto brightness & haptic feedback & GPS. Use wifi when you can. Turn it off when you can't.

I advise getting rid of SetCPU and switch to ROM Toolbox. It has all that SetCPU does plus TONS that it doesn't. With it you can adjust memory settings and allocate RAM where you see fit.

I hope this helps.

i never used powersave before but that is a great way to use that. nice tip thanx. and i need to try rom toolbox. seems like a lot of people are using it these days. i'm old school and setcpu was my very first root app i downloaded from the market. sounds like another itch i need to scratch with me being an appwhore:eek::D

Is there a big difference between Swype and the "Trace" keyboard input function?
never heard of trace before, but i really like swype.

op if you have signed up for the swype beta you can uninstall the one in mikg and use the swyoe installer to get the beta. i think it is better then what comes with some of the roms i have tried.

All the powersave governor does is keep your phone at the minimum cpu speed. So if you set a screen off profile with say ondemand and 245 is both your max and min, it's essentially the same thing....at least that's what I remember from the governor explanations I've read. It's the exact opposite of performance.
