Eris to v2.x, when?

1. Stop responding to Exploder and his pleas. If he doesn't understand the simplicity of this, then have him wait for the OTA.

2. So shouldn't we change the title of this thread to 2.1? Or are we waiting for the actual legit OTA update?

3. I like lists. It helps me separate points in a concise manner without making paragraphs. If I do make paragraphs I feel inclined to write more to have a fuller sized paragraph.

I agree with you because:

1. I also like lists.

2. You seem to know what you're talking about.

3. Rainbows are colorful.

Ha.

1 and 3 are facts while 2 is subjective and possibly wrong. I ain't no dummy though. I'm new here, but I may make myself a home in this internet corner.

You'll notice I said you "seem" to know what you're talking about. That can be neither right nor wrong. It is simply my opinion of you given one post you made. ;)

Dumb question, but I knew how to do this on 1.5. How do I stop text notifications and sounds? I'm giving Handcent a shot right now, but I'm getting duplicates. I did Settings> Sounds, but nothing allows me to disable the double notifications of the stock and Handcent messages.

It doesn't GO to winrar... it just opens the program... your browser IE/FireFox saves it to a folder on your hard drive. WinRar just picks it up from there. They are asking you to close winrar, find the zip file on your hard drive and copy it to the memory card on the phone via USB (in My Computer))

How much battery do I need to do this? 50%, 100%? Can it be charging while I do this? I'm sorry but I've read this whole thing, and I don't think it's anything anyone mentioned...I'm at 50% and just wondering if I'll be ok or if I should wait. Thanks!

It can be tethered or plugged into the wall while upgrading. At 50% you should be ok, but I don't know that I would take the risk personally.

You turn off the default msg alert? I assume you are sms popups.

You'll have to go into the settings of the messaging apps themselves. Open the messaging app you want to change notification settings for (either Messages or Handcent), press the menu button, then choose settings. Somewhere in there you can turn off notifications. Turn off notifications for the stock app and leave on the ones for Handcent or vice versa depending on what you want.

I don't know if anyone found this yet, but to fix the browser showing the whole web page when you open it, just open settings and uncheck "open pages in overview".
Hope this helps.....

You should definitely be able to go back no problem. the MR2 is a manual flashing of the firmware to the 1.5 software (ROM) (officially released from Verizon) to push the software onto your plugged in phone. You can do this with any computer technology (your PC's bios firmware, your CD/DVD firmware, all kinds of phones, etc)

The OTA may or may not work, if it doesn't just use the MR2 ROM update to go back to 1.5, and the OTA should work just fine.

For those of you asking if you can factory reset back to 1.5....definitely not possible.

Here is a basic lesson in computer/electronic technology

FIRMWARE updates are permanent even after factory resets. From a technical stand point FIRMWARE is the software that is burned into the chip set (aka ROM). So when you do a factory reset you are really only wiping out your RAM, you will go back to a clean wiped out time of your RAM's data and the ROM version will remain at 2.1. All the contacts, and app you intall are stored in the RAM memory.

ROM memory is not writable without flashing (aka this leaked 2.1 ROM is flashing the latest software to your ROM chipset). Again, your RAM is where your downloaded data goes and parts of your OS live (but some parts of this RAM are locked by the carriers), and all the stuff you put on the phone that is easily deleted and installed. Without a flashing tool you can't touch ROM chipset.

basic computer lesson of the day is out =-)

RAM and ROM heh.

yeah those trying to downgrade with the Mr2 file it wont work because it wont recognize your phone(different release keys) therefore wont start....so if you got 2.1 you're stuck for now.

This is just plain wrong. RAM is only used while powered and is not used to save anything through a power cycle (contacts, settings, etc.) RAM is WIPED OUT when you shut the phone off. Non-volatile (typically EEPROM) memory is used to save settings. It wouldn't do you any good to save any settings in RAM as you would lose those settings every time you rebooted your phone. When you do a factory reset, you are resetting the EEPROM back to their factory defaults. The factory defaults are usually stored in program space on the flash chip (the chip that gets flashed during an upgrade, or ROM).

An Android phone may be slightly different, but this is how any embedded system I've ever programmed operates. But ones thing's for sure, RAM is NOT used for anything other than storing temporary data during run time.

.

Here is why I am not buying this theory until someone actually goes through the 2.1 --> MR2 process and shows it works:

What if it is the case that the MR2 updater is NOT the full 1.5 ROM, but just a patcher of the 1.5 ROM. If so, it would need an existing installed 1.5 on your phone to work, and it couldn't convert 2.1 to 1.5.
Right?
And in fact, the OTA MR2 update came through quite quickly, so it seems unlikely to have been the full 1.5 ROM.

Now, maybe the non-OTA updater that is avail on the pcdphones website really is much bigger and has the whole 1.5 ROM in it? I don't know.

But that's what holds me back.

Slugdoc

(not a huge fan of irreversible steps.)

EDIT ** The file on pcdphones is 119 MB. Makes sense as the whole ROM.
So, um, never mind, should work fine. :-)
Will update to 2.1 when I get home.

RE-EDIT ***
Too hasty. Apparently may not work per Caddy and another new thread. Show me the proof first.

ok ok ok i think im starting to understand the whole zip thing is really what was confusing me i know what to do once i find the downlaod i just cant seem to find it now other than winRAR

I specifically remember people not being able to go back to mr1 from mr2, this i would think is no different.

End of story.

It isn't end of story until someone actually does it successfully. Until then it's all speculation and people's "feelings" on what should or may happen.

:)

So, in the stock messenger, does the character count box (black box 35/155) still block the message? Or did they correct that issue? Valid question I think as it was brought up before in another thread.

Thanks!
