Eris to v2.x, when?

So nobody's truly aware whether we will receive the OTA when it rolls out if we install the leaked 2.1?

I'd think that any answer on that is just an educated guess at this point. While some folks here guess mighty good (and are well educated on the topic) I don't think that's something anyone can currently KNOW the answer too. Might be one of those things that isn't known for sure until the OTA rolls out.

Sigh.....

If you install the ROM and then it's sent via OTA, you will NOT be upgraded unless the version changes.

Period. Point. Blank.

When testers have newer software on their phones, they do NOT get the OTA when it's released.

Writing to ROMs is oxymoronic.

*Flashing* to ROM is apparently what it's about. I am no expert on this, but Read Only Memory is accessed to be "written" in a way (maybe replaced for all I know) via the one-way-street of flashing, as in when we flash our BIOS on our computers if need be.

That's the way I'm understanding it at the moment.

And THIS boys and girls, is one of the many reason I decided to wait.

Everybody is asking about downgrading to 1.5 to get the official update when it comes out. Would this actually need to be done if PDC posts the official RUU update (MR3 or whatever)? I would think that they would make it available and that the bootloader would be the same...

version can stay the same and it still have more stuff in it? idk

i assume that when the OTA is issued the manual update will show up on PDc for us to install manually?

Perhaps I should have chosen different terms. If the software PACKAGE doesn't change..

well you get the jist...

Precisely. If the version you load is the same as the OTA, you won't get updated.

If the OTA is a NEWER/DIFFERENT version, you will be upgraded.

Again, I got my wires crossed with all the misinformation and the plethora of posts on the subject today. It does sound like a low-risk option and the more I hear about the probability of getting future updates being close to 100% the more comfortable I am with the idea.

Sigh. Tried to hold out. Didn't even make it 24 hours. Downloading the rom right now.

yes

there is even a difference in the vib when you try to move a htc widget as opposed to a android widget on a home screen, try it.

also you can disable the vib on the home buttons too.

I know you're getting tired of this, one more answer please!

Ok, say I do this upgrade. It works great. They push the official OTA, and it's the same, so I don't get the OTA and I'm good to go. Then, when they do an OTA for the bug fixes/patches (I'm assuming they'll do that eventually), I will get those OTA because this is official and the phone is not rooted, right?

I'm going to give it a try, I think. I just want to be careful that I can get the new OTA if it's different, and that I'll get future updates, whether or not the OTA to 2.1 is different.

Thanks! :)

ETA: You don't need to go into anything to answer me. A simple "Yup, you're smarting than you look" or "nope, you're a dimb @ss" is fine. ;)

ETA (again): Went ahead and went for it. Booting up now.... ..... seems to stick on the verizon page longer, but went past the htc page faster. **shrugs** loading the home screen! ... lol .... sorry, keeping myself busy for the time it takes, to load, guess it's taking so long because it's the first time? It works!! :-D I know everyone has posted that, lol, but I'm so excited! I'm going to DH's work right now to show him. :)

this is correct. when MR1 was leaked I installed it. then when pcdphones put it out, it was the same version. for s'n'g I downloaded the manual update and it reinstalled MR1. I did this just to make sure no errors in leak. No problems.

So, If you install this leak, as I did, when the push starts happening, go to pcdphones to dl the manual install just to make sure.

only thing I have found with the leak, is in the gmail app. when I select "show pictures" i just get place settings.

had similar issues before when upgrading before the release was official. something about "footprint" was therorized.

and no, you cant go back. just tried it.

Anyone that has had a problem with an upgrade can always downgrade back to the older version and retry the OTA update.

How to manually update your Droid Eris | Android Central

I had my phone go really screwy and downgraded it a while back and did the update in stages. This will wipe all data on the phone so back it up first.

once you do that it'll do any of the updates that have already been pushed to the phone.

I've done this twice in the past with newer roms to get back to the second update we got. It should work. It does a full wipe and puts the older version on. The phone then immediately notifies you that you have an update available and it's the third patch.

Once you have had 2.1 there is no going back the bootloader isnt the same trust me ive tried so many times and i have to send the eris back to VZW i messed up VZW please let me go back to 1.5 :(

where the heck in this thread is the most current download for 2.1 and instructions? should be a sticky. a PITA to find.

Rather than retype I'm going to keep it simple.

Here's the .zip file you need.

And Caddyman has the easy-as-pie instructions.

Copy the file to the root of the card.

Power off phone.

With phone off, press volume down and power at the same time.

Phone will boot into HBOOT mode (white background/green text).

Blue text will come up asking if you want to update.

Click the trackball to select.

The phone will go through some stuff and come back with update complete. It may take up to 10 minutes.

It will prompt you to reboot, click the trackball and the phone will reboot.

Good luck! I'm about to take the plunge myself. I think.
