Root [Revised] Rooting Gingerbread 2.3.5 Dummies Guide

Ok so I followed the TacoRoot meathod because it seemed to be the easiest. Everything went very smoothly until I got stuck about midway through the process. I got to the part where it is rebooting into root(step 10), and then it just started going into a reboot cycle and never got out. It is just going through the Sprint start up screen and then to the "4G" screen and then back to the Sprint screen. Can anyone tell me how to fix this?

yes your phone will do that. you can still enter the commands on your pc. taco root makes your phone very unstable, you will not be able to use it while you are doing this. to return it to a stable state you will need to enter the undo command. but that step is later on. just continue on.

Ok, well now I proceeded to the next step(11) and it gave me the "#" so that went right. But then in step 12 I typed the first command and it said "No such file or directory." the other two following that appeared to work though. Is that normal?

I placed a screen shot of the adb shell as an attachment

Your phone needs to be connected to the computer in Charge only mode. If it's still set to Disk Drive mode from when you copied the files over to it, the adb commands will not be able to read from the SD card, and will give you that error. Since the device is now unstable, you're going to need to issue the Tacoroot undo command, and start over with the first Tacoroot command (after you change the USB Connection to "Charge only," of course)

@ocn
We seem to be seeing this same issue over and over again with the Tacoroot method. Maybe a step needs to be included in the instructions specifically to change the device back to charge only mode after copying and extracting the files onto the SD card?

It shows that in step 4 and step 5. I recomend that they print the instructions out so they can read step by step as the rooting process is done otherwise there is to many pages open on the computer. But adding that after step 11 would be a good reminder.

Yup, you're right, there it is at the beginning of step 5. Printing out the instructions probably is a good idea.

Hi. New to the forum and rooting. In the description below from the tacoroot version instructions, it says to extract the file from the zip. I am confused if I'm supposed to put the extracted file or the zip file itself on the root of the sd card. Thanks
I put the extracted file on the root and got as far as step 10 but then it stated "device not found" Any ideas? Thanks.

"4.we need to extract then move the flash_image.zip and the mtd-eng.zip on to the sd card."

11.in the command window type:
Code:
adb shell
12. ok you should get # in the command window if not then something went wrong. if you do get # then type:
Code:
cat /sdcard/flash_image > /data/flash_image
then:
Code:
chmod 755 /data/flash_image
and last:
Code:
/data/flash_image misc /sdcard/mtd-eng.img
the command screen should look like this when all the commands are entered:
attachmentvf.png

I keep getting "no such file in the directory" when I type

cat /sdcard/flash_image > /data/flash_image

Is this because I should've put the whole folder in the sim card and not just the flash_image file?

Thanks!

did you do step 5 in the taco root method?

and we do not have a sim card. just a sd card.

you need to unzip the mtd and flash img files. there is nothing else in the zipped file so i'm not sure what you mean by not the whole file. once they are unzipped then move them to the sd card.

welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
you want the extracted file over to the root of the sd card. the zipped file will not work.

ok so i also edited the guide so as not to be as confusing.

and as far step 10 goes. i'm not sure but if you did the commands for step 8 and 9 with no issues not sure why it hangs at that step. are you sure you are entering the command correctly?

finally got my phone rooted.. thanks everyone for the help.. now which is the best rom out there? right now im using the supersonic cyanogenmod (sorry if spelled wrong) and its pretty cool so far.. the thing i really like most about it is how it turns off like a tv when you press the power button.. i wanna text out new roms though.. what do you guys recommend?

Thanks again for the guide OCN...talked my wife into letting me root her phone (family pic as splash screen on mine did the trick!!), she, thankfully did not accept latest OTA, so we used Revolutionary...very simple!!

welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!!!!!
nice guys, now go and get your flash on!!!!!!!

and as far as roms go, it is all matter of opinion. i like mikg3.1 it is sense 2.1 and sense 3.0 cooked in and has now been updated to the latest 4.67 ota.

if you wat to try something different then try aosp (android open source project). it is pure android with nothing added like htc does with sense. it does take more work to get it workingjust right. first after you flash the rom you will need to flash the gapps (google apps) file to get all of google's apps including the market. (now the play store, actually i'm not sure if there is a new gapps file with the play store in it yet.). also you will most likely need to flashand additional driver to get gps working correctly. and then you will need to choose a launcher (most come with adw, but i really do not like it). so it is more work but, you will get better battery life(YRMV) as well as performance (YRMV). plus they are smaller in size as well.

ok cool.. ima still a noob at this stuff.. do i have to go to recovery and delete eveything? wipe all data off the phone and sd card and then flash from zip file? just want to make sure i do it right

best thing to do is read this guide:
http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...ooting-dummies-guide-gingerbread-edition.html

go to the after rooting section. there is tons of info including on how to flash roms and also do not foget to make a nandroid backup as well.

hi, im really new at this. so i am using the taco root method on my evo 4g. i am doing great all the way until i get to step 16. first, it tells me no image found a few times, then it says checking pcimg36...then nothing happens. i would like to know, first, should the files (pcimg36, flash and mtg) already be unzipped when i put them on my sd card? I've tried it both ways and it doesn't work either way, but I would still like to know which way is correct. additionally, there is only one copy of each file in no folder whatsoever on my sd card. basically, ive tried the whole rooting thing twice, with the same result at step 16. what am i doing wrong?

It need to be exactly PC36IMG.zip Windows hides the ext so dont add a zip or take away a zip so if you are set to hide ext in windows u will just see PC36IMG This needs to be on the sd and left zipped. and not in any folders

thanks, i am starting over for the fourth time, can you tell me what to do if on step 12, when i enter cat /sdcard/flash_image > /data/flash_image it says no file or directory found. I unzipped the file and added it to the sd card, i went on to enter the next two commands and they worked fine. any advice on this would be greatly appreciated.

As long as in step 11 when u type adb shell the prompt chenges to # and the file is on the sd card in no folder and the comand is typed corectly u should not get that error. I did not get that error so i dont have an answer for that. if it happens i would ask here again and someone should be able to help you.

You usually only get that error when the device is connected in Disk Drive mode instead of Charge only mode.

Either that, or the file hasn't been extracted to the root of the SD card.
