Root [Revised] Rooting Gingerbread 2.3.5 Dummies Guide

I downloaded it but where do I go to change the settings? Can't find it lol

There is no stings for kernels.you will need to use setcpu from the market. Please read the kernel for dummies. It's in the root info sticky at the top of this forum.I'm on the phone do can't link you at the moment. Inside the guide it had a link for a guide to using setcpu.

Brand new to the forum and to smart phones. That being said... HELLO!

ocnbrze has undoubtedly gone through much effort to create a comprehensive and useful guide to helping us root our phones. For that I thank you!

Unfortunate I don't see a link to any of the three methods laid out in the original post.

I am very excited about rooting my phone and any advice or point out of my stupidity would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Are you clicking the "show" button under each method?

Please Help!!! I'm going on 4 hours today trying to root this thing! Got bootloader unlocked. Then flashed the recovery image via the cmd prompt. Rebooted, and still no root! What am I doing wrong?

ok all you will need to do is flash the su file or flash a custom rom that has the su app cooked in. the instructions are in the guide.

Yes I literally just finished! I saw that on another forum. I felt so stupid. Are you sure it mentions it on this guide? I do remember trying to do the SU file but it said it was corrupted. Anyway, I feel like a complete dope. I was shakin' in my little boots when I started all this, as this is my first root. I seriously had the bootloader unlocked, and the recovery flashed in about 10 minutes. The other 3 hours and 50 minutes after that was trying to figure out why i wasn't rooted yet! lol. Anyways, I just flashed the mikg rom. LOVE IT! I am hooked! I'm sure you guys will see a lot of me around here now! If anybody reads this that is skeptical about rooting the evo with 2.3.5, don't be! It's not as scary as it looks. And this guide makes it super easy. Just remember to flash a rom when you're done! lmao

NICE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
well i'm glad you figured it out. but yes it is in the guide, it is under the stay on stock tab. but none the less glad it worked. and i do hope to see more of you around here as this is a great community and we are all here to help where we can.

just be forewarned flashing can become addicting. and if so you will have to join the rest of us flashaholics:D:D

Now that I'm rooted and runnin mikg you guys have any app suggestions?

yes here they are:
1. titanium backup and the backup pro key. this will not only backup your apps and data, but also it can be used to freeze and delete bloatware (freeze them first before deleting as some things on your phone may become unstable)

2.setcpu in conjunction with flashing a custom kernel. this will help to set what your cpu scaling will be and it could really help with battery life. http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/210253-setcpu-guide.html

3.root explorer (not free, but a very good app and worth the money) this is just a file manager, but you can use it to search for certain things that are on the system partitions and can do more things then other file managers can.

4.add free is nice to have as well.

and whatever you do DO NOT USE ROM MANAGER it is way to buggy and has been known to create more problems the it is worth.

Just joined today, looks like a great place to be for info!

BRAND new to root etc... but not new to computers which is why I feel like a total tool for having this problem...

I am using the "tacoroot" method and am stuck on step 7....

When I reboot the phone into stock recovery...

(which btw is supposed to look totally normal right? What I mean to say, is that it appears as though nothing has changed at all with the phone... All my preferences, apps, etc... are still intact)

...I then open the cmd from the android folder I created on my desktop and used copy-paste to enter "adb push tacoroot.sh /data/local/" and press enter.

I'm getting the "adb is not recognized as an internal or external command, etc..."

HUH? I feel like a total noob. lol

Guess its a good thing I am huh? Any help.
Thanks in advance!!!

Oh wow.... I should have never taken up board space. lol sorry everyone. Somehow, someway a digit made it into the adb file extension, so cmd couldn't find it. lol

The update is in progress now, I think its working just fine!!

glad you got that figured out. please let us know how your rooting went. also feel free to ask any more questions that you have. now go and get your root on:D:D

WOW!! worked flawlessly!! Thank you so much ocnbrze for the great collection of information and write-up's! I started with a very old but seemingly well trusted ROM; MYN's warm two-point-two.

Its a start... But it does show its age. I'm seeing a few Icecreamsandwich ROM's, but none that allow 4G and have been tested enough for my taste... This is all just so new to me... I don't know where to start.

Any links to a good discussion, here or another site, of ROM's? I'm looking to get a more updated look.

:) Thanks everyone!

well here is some roms and kernels that we try to keep updated:
http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/284413-roms-kernels-download-page.html

and also best place to start is over on xda:
EVO 4G Android Development - xda-developers

but some dev's have jumped away from xda because there is a lot of drama over there sometimes so mik's forum is not bad as well:
HTC Evo 4G ROM Development

my suggestion with these other forums is not to post over there unless you are having issues with that particular rom or questions about it. the problem is when i read the threads about the rom i get a ton of "awesome rom!" or "downloading now" and it can be tough to find any of the issues that the roms has or get any valuable info. go over there and you will see what i mean.

and my suggestion is to read the threads as much as you can tolerate. read the op from top to bottom and sometimes the dev will have a 2nd or 3rd post with more info. read all of it first before flashing the rom. also sometimes there are info there in the thread that is not in the op so it is always good to try and weed thru the thread (if you can).

i would try mikg3.11 as far as roms go. it is sense 2.1 and sense 3.0. pretty awesome rom. also if you like myn's warm 2.2 then myn has warm 2.3 out now try that as well ( i have not tried it yet).

Warm 2.2 is a great ROM, but I think you'll find yourself missing ginerbread before too long.

If I were you I would give MikG3.11 a go like OCN mentioned.

Warm 2.3 is a sense 3.5 ROM and those all still have too many issues for me to be running as a daily driver.

Trying to take the process you described step-by-step, but unfortunately, I did not get very far. When you said to hold down the vol down key with the power key to get to the bootloader, all it gave me was the power options screen. Tried it several times, but got the same result. Am I misunderstanding the instruction? Your guidance would be appreciated...

welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
you need to disable fastboot, settings>apps>uncheck fastboot. now you can fully power off and then get to the bootloader.

My phone doesn't seem to want to cooperate. I disabled fastboot and powered the phone off. Turned it back on and held down the power key and the volume down key simultaneously, but all I get is the power options screen. Am I not following the directions properly for getting to the bootloader? Please bear with me as some of these terms are very foreign to me; I'm not an expert at this sort of thing... Thanks.

I was finally able to root my evo today. I had Hboot 2.18.001.1 and android version 2.3.5 I was able to 'unlock' it using the tutorials here but then ran into some problems. Maybe just because I'm a complete noob with this stuff...for me sometimes seeing it is better. Anyways...I googled you tube (I can't post link b/c I'm new here so it won't let me) the video is named: How To Root Evo 4g with Hboot 2.1.8 and the creator is: lamarW89. He's not really showing you anything different than what is explained here in the forum---but just putting (somewhat) of a pictorial with it. Hope it helps someone else out like it did me.
@jgreyone-to get to the bootloader you don't power the phone on and THEN press the power button and down volume button...pressing the down volume button and the power button at the same time is what turns the phone on and loads it into the bootloader. Hope this helps.

the easiest way is to just pull the battery out and then put it back in. now press and hold power+vol down. you should get to the bootloader now. and do not power the phone on first. just press and hold power+vol down.
