Root Whos rooted?

I am waiting on att to fix my data. I bought mine at best buy yesterday and haven't had data all day. They kept telling me that the systems are down. I will root as soon as I can confirm data working. I have been using my wifi.

How did you root yours?
 
In the absence of different ROMs rooting will allow you to do some backing up of apps and the existing environment the phone has. I am betting that ICS will be available OTA before any solid ROMs from developers are available.

Even for the SR the ROMs are just now getting pretty solid and only one that I used that was very close to ICS and worked really really well. I actually miss it but the Note will catch up it time......

Just be patient....

In the club now. If others didn't notice, Note has CIFS/SMB support built into the factory ROM. Just need root to leverage the utilities that permit you to mount network drives to your device over the wireless network. :)
 
Also i used the same how to posted above for the root but found it on another site with images abduction a step by step walk thru. It was very easy
 
Yep Rooted to get rid of crap and installed cpu app and I'm clocked at 810MHz still seems smooth and battery is much better
 
i just installed Saurom rom. things are ok with the att fix. i cant connect to wifi now. im combing the forums but no real answer. any help?

Hope you're betting with someone else's money.

I would suggest that you not hold your breath on an OTA.

Rooted.

Easy, painless and totally reversible (in a back-to-stock sense).

The only that's not reversible as yet is resetting flash counter, but if you flash a root kernel via Odin, you shouldn't trip the flash counter anyway.

I'm coming from an iphone for the last 4 years... trying to read up as much as possible about rooting/roms/kernels/etc., not too mention learning a whole new ecosystem. Not sure what all this talk about Odin and flashing a root kernel is.

Do you perform this during the root, after, before? and how does one "flash" a kernel, does Odin (which I assume is an app?) offer this option pretty clearly?

Also, after reading the above link ([ROOT] [AT&T, TELUS, Bell, Rogers] Pre-Rooted Kernel (flash via Odin) - xda-developers) I said WHAAAA...?

Yes, Odin is a utility that you use to flash files on to your phone which essentially give you administrator access to partitions, system files, etc that you don't have normally. This process is called "rooting" or "gaining root access".

Do not be afraid of the process; it's not tough and is fixable if done incorrectly.

I would suggest Googling "Odin3 v1.85" or "Odin for Android" and you'll almost certainly find it.

This process in general is much less painstaking than jailbreaking an Iphone and also less fraught with peril.

P.S. A kernel is what tells your OS how to function with the apps you see and use every day. In short, there are numerous ways to root a phone (basic root zip file, a one-click pre-packaged super root-type utility, etc.), but a root kernel is a good way to go because it helps direct the OS to potentially do other things along the lines of increased efficiency and/or performance to go along with just giving you root directory access. DaG over at XDA has a couple of really solid root kernels to get you going.

I just got the Telus version today. I'll write my usual user friendly all in one guides soon but I wanted to know if the above root method provides the following:

CWM (not stock recovery)
NFC in an enabled state.

Strictly speaking, no and no.

There's no one single file, ROM or kernel that will act as an all-in-one flash to give you root, CWM and NFC enabled; at least, not that I've seen yet for the Note, although these have existed and do exist for other devices. I did them all separately but yes, used Odin to accomplish the first two and then zip file to SD card and installed from CWM to get NFC enabled.

I flashed a CWM .tar after being rooted, but could have done so prior to root. So I initially flashed a root kernel (the one of DaG's from XDA that's not OC'd or UV'd; just vanilla). I think this answers the CWM question but if I'm creating more confusion than answering questions, please let me know! lol

NFC is not enabled in the root kernel I flashed or the custom ROM I am currently running (Solaris Prime). However, there's a zip file installable through CWM that simply "opens" the NFC option in the settings menu on the device. I do believe you need to be rooted for this to work.
