Eris to v2.x, when?

I timed a sent text yesterday in class, and from when i pressed send to when I could type another, it was 15 seconds. Now, it's 2 seconds. That alone makes this update well worth it. Though Swype is acting weird and not giving me the ability to add new words. Is there an update?

Hello all! Long time lurker, first time poster!

I missed checking the site on Wed. Checked on Thursday and bang! A crap load of new posts. I had to go back 10+ pages to catch up and see what happened. I assumed the OTA came out and I somehow didn't get it on my phone. I was excited to read about the leak.

After catching up and reading ALL the posts, I dove in head first! I followed the given instructions and what was displayed on my screen and everything went PERFECTLY! (I had to press Vol down and the Trackball...)

I AM LOVING 2.1!!

Some comments to what has been asked...

Battery : My battery seems to be better than it was, but like everyone else, I played with it a LONG time yesterday!

Lag : I agree, it seemed a little laggy, but then I turned off Haptic Feedback and it really speeds everything up!

Multiple GMail accounts : I loaded 4. Worked fine. This morning I decided to go back to K-9 mail as I like the option of having the Arrows and Delete buttons displayed while reading. I like K-9 overall. So I remove all but 1 Gmail account from the stock app and moved the other 3 to K-9.

Navigation : One word.... ROCKS! The Navigation is awesome. That alone is worth taking the plunge now!

Regrets : I have none. My only concern was if I was going to brick my phone... other than that. I see no reason not to upgrade.

Thanks to all that helped with this procedure and thanks to all that contribute to the forum! Makes owning my Eris exciting!

Good to see. Would you mind navigating the web with the stock browser for a while and reporting back? Issues have been reported, namely random crashes (browser vanishing), etc.

I have used my browser for stints of around 20 minutes at a time since I updated and have experienced no crashes.

I've had no problem with the stock browser so far and I used it pretty heavily last night. Minus a few other bugs that have popped up I am extremely happy with the switch.

I surfed all day yesterday and didn't get any random closes. I do get a "zoomed out" view as standard (I like!) instead of a "zoomed in" view that I got with 1.5. I think some reported the "zoomed in" view in 2.1 and had to fix...

I was using Dolphin on 1.5, but haven't changed yet since 2.1. So far, I haven't seen a need to move back to Dolphin.

Come on Frisco... the water is fine! :)

I believe the zoomed out feature is a check-choice called "mobile view" in the browser settings menu.

Thanks for the invitation, Ducky, but I'm committed to waiting for the official OTA with the hope that the 2.1 developers are reading here there and everywhere about this "leak" and are addressing repeated issues. ;)

I am sooooooo hesitant about taking the plunge.....

if i do this and something goes wrong, verizon has no obligation to honor my insurance plan for this phone

To me the money is not the central issue. It just makes more sense to let the company I purchased the device from modify my phone officially rather than to let a leaked version of that company's update come into my device.

It seems like a no-brainer to me. Obviously there are a lot of Eris users who disagree with that and I respect their decision... I think. :p

no one thanked me for posting the "How To" that CaptainKrtek made here on AF =[
it is the reason most users now have the leaked 2.1 here

but I'm glad at how well the leak is working =]

i was trying to not be specific with the thanks because there would be so many names to add to the list lol but for you thank you JrzDroid for helping people with the install.

Frisco, I respect your decision to wait. You are stronger than I was! I just hope your wait is short! I personally couldn't stand the temptation. And I had nothing better to do ALL DAY yesterday! :)

i was actually joking around about being thanked. If everyone noticed I got thanked a lot, I just wanted to post something cause my sig has the link for anyone who decides to jump on the leak train

Thanks for your signature link. I was going cross eyed sifting through all this to find the leak link.

Personally I wouldn't count on the OTA being different because of the 'testing' going on with the leaked version. It may be different, but not because of this. If it's different it's because their internal testing had already found these bugs and they've taken steps to correct them. Ultimately I think it will depend on how old this leaked version is and what mods they've already introduced into the build.

In theory they are just days away from the OTA. If that's true they're not going to be tweaking it now, tweaks require more testing. They've been working on this for months to get to this point, I wouldn't think they'd want to have to restart testing to fix some of the things that have been reported here. At some point you have to say "we're stopping here" with the programming, so that the testing can be completed. I'd sooner think that if the OTA has similar bugs then there will be a patch some weeks after, much like the did shortly after the phone was originally released.

How nice would it be if the next few firmware updates that the Eris may get were all released like this? Does it make the future worse, because now instead of waiting for 2.2 to come OTA, we'll be fighting two battles: when will OTA come, and if some mysterious Chinese guy from HTC leaks 2.2 ahead of time again. We'll need to be on the lookout for two things.

May make things more hectic, don't you think?

Or, simply, we could finally get the root and just worry about custom ROMs. Either way, we have one more thing to wait for anxiously.

The bulk of postings until this leak arrived were about when the 2.1 OTA would arrive. There have been many threads and hundreds of posts about that one isssue: when.

Now that a leak has occurred we're seeing a lot less of that, of course, but the issue of when it's due is still the same; I actually think it was an accidental leak, not an intentional one as has been speculated around the forums by many, including me.

I further think they are on schedule for their announced OTA roll out "before the end of Q1."

Haha Boosh, cash.

Upadte:

Chomp SMS, so far (*knocks on wood*) no problems with texts! It actually is a better program than handcent as well, muchh snappier :D. The only reason i wans't using it in the first place was MMS..but my MMS doesn't work anyone so eff it. :D

I havent had any difficulty using Chomp and MMS. It handles MMS fine so far as I can tell, even allowing the sending of multiple images.

This is consistent with product testing I've been involved with. Personally, I expect OTA quite soon with a dot release in another month or so.
