Root [Root] Virgin Mobile Security Update Now Rooted & Safe

JerryScript

We have successfully rooted the Virgin Mobile Security Update now. It is safe to install it. Once you have installed it, you will have the latest radio for the cell phone towers. After installing, follow the steps in the thread linked below to root it again, then you can restore your current ROM and still have the new radio. ;)

You will probably be receiving a text message soon informing you of a security update for the Optimus V. You would be wise not to install it for now!

This update will remove root, replace your custom recovery, and install a radio image that is currently only supported by the software version it comes with.

Give the devs a week or two to dig into the package, and we may come up with something usable.

Note - Do not install the radio if you already have the touch recovery installed!

No, the OTA update system is still borked. That's why they have to outline steps for you to install this that are basically the same as installing a custom ROM. ;)

I'll see if they have anything interesting, kinda doubt it, already know the kernel is no help, and I highly doubt the radio will be either. :(

It doesn't matter what ROM you are running, VM doesn't know that, they just know you have an account with a registered Optimus V. ;)

Okay well let's do this let's say I put the update.zip on my SD card and go to system updates on ICS what will I see

Is it just me, or should this *totally* be stickied - at least for the time being ?

*ponders messaging someone with the power*

I tried posting a nicely-worded warning on VMUSA's Facebook page, and it immediately got removed. Seems they're trying to trick users into installing this update, without telling us exactly what is in it. Pretty sleazy if you ask me.

And I agree that this should be stickied on this forum, the Optimus V forum AND the VMUSA forum. Get the word out -- this update sounds like bad news!

its funny how there targiting te wrong users rooted/modded users are smart enough not to take the updat but e use the mst data people woo are stock dont care but they dont hit that 2.5 gig cap

Nothing conspiratorial here, all manufacturers do this.

They don't like you messing with the phones.
PC companies used to act the same way.

@JerryScript You should ask to get this "Sticky" because if i didnt see this i would have updated once i get the message sent to me!

This topic is currently being discussed in both V forums. More people will see it than will see it if it's sticky'd (sounds crazy, but most new members don't see the sticky section). When the topic has run it's course and the update msg is still being sent out and it looks like it might fade into the archives I'll put it in the Sticky section.
