Root [Guide] How to flash the ZV9 update, for the technically challenged

Have you tried the FasterFix app (free on Google Play)? It improved my GPS lock-ons noticeably, and got me several more satellites.

I just got it. Unfortunately, my gps is still goofy. It's showing my location almost out of my town

What app do you use to see satellite locks?

Go to settings/Location & security settings/GPS Source. Make sure "Use Internal GPS" is checked. Sometimes this can be disabled and cause the problems your experiencing.

Seems likes since I installed the radio update I have alot of Call Lost issues when making or receiving calls. No reboot problems like others have reported. Tried wiping and reflashing rom and still having issues. It happens even when I have a full signal. Anyone else having any issues like this? Just got this phone from a warranty swap a few weeks ago so would hope it's not hardware but not ruling that out yet

I know that brotherswing, you know that, but I don't think TheRealKTFO will be totally convinced until he follows my advice on a fix for a normal BACKside GPS bug. Sometimes the simplest fix is overlooked.
This will also help other members that aren't quite convinced as well.

Changed the setting. It was off  Thanks for the tip. Gps found me, but the nag persists..Normal?

Sorry 'bout going off track in the thread. I was thinking the radio update might help or at least have something to do with the gps funkiness.

Appreciate the help, back to topic...

I thought so too, for a few days. I wasn't able to get any verifiable data. I've chocked it up to just one more example of how much your day to day performance on a smartphone can vary. Some days my phone acts like it's hung-over, other days it gives my laptop a run for it's money.

Z-Device Test (free from Google Play). Tests a lot of things, all of them very well. Menu key will get options on some tests.
In another forum it was mentioned that quite a few OVs have bad GPS chips, that could be your problem.

I am here because I have zv9 (I installed the update manually from LG last week),before I discovered the memory issues. So now I need to root to use link2sd.

Gingerbreak won't work n tis, so I was directed here.

I am looking at the instructions and had a few questions

It appears this guide is for already rooted users who want to upgrade. Is that correct?

I am NOT rooted and on
baseband
vm60zv9_604010001
kernel
2.6.32.9
build
zv9.479a6632
sw version
vm670zv9

to just get root access do I just start with stage 2
*******************
Stage 2
10) On the phone, go to Menu-Settings-Applications-Developement and make sure Android Debugging is enabled.
11) On the PC, navigate to C:\SDK\platform-tools. Double click Gordita.bat. If it doesn't work (or hits an error), open it with a text editor, then copy and paste each line individually into the command prompt window. You can skip the lines that begin with "echo."
12) Wait for it to finish. You'll know it's done when you see "Recovery flashed! Enjoy."
***************

Then I don't need to do step 13-15 since I have not backup, is that correct?

Basically Gordita.bat will root the phone? will it put the superuser icon on it? and I assume I will still have all my apps I have downloaded?

Thanks

Bob

Bob, yes, you seem to have a grasp on the raw basics. Skip to stage two, yes you'll have superuser, yes you'll have all your apps. As wraith pointed out, you'll also have a custom recovery suitable for flashing the Rom of your choice. Even if that choice is stock, no harm will come to your phone just because you have that recovery. Just don't play with settings you don't understand, and you'll be fine.

:eek:almost forgot! DON'T DO A FACTORY RESET IN THE PRIVACY MENU! That would brick your phone!

Ok,

I ran gordita.bat and it went fine, I boot into recovery and select

Apply update from sd card

I hit the power button. Isn't that how you select an option?

And I get the icon, but nothing happens.

I hit any button and I get the menu again again, in fact not matter what option I hit even reboot, nothing happens, it goes to the icon and sits.

Any idea?

Thanks

Bob

Flashed this about a week ago and here's what I've seen:
-Faster Maps and GPS
-Better reception at home (Used to get no bars, now I get 2-3)
-3G at home, used to only get 1x
-Calls seem the same quality
-Texts seem to be arriving a bit faster from I can tell and some tests I've run

Overall, I'm quite happy with the way it turned out. Flashing the new radio was easy with your guide, however I did experience the same problem as the guy in post #5. Changing the name of the recovery quickly fixed it though.

Just to update. I did not fix permissions or mess with any other settings and my phone hasn't reset in while texting in a week. maybe whatever was wrong worked itself out

I just went through and double checked all my links. They all worked fine for me....
Maybe it's the way your browser is handling the download redirect....Just thinking out loud.

Just want to say thanks so much for this Brotherswing!

Ran through this just now and worked like a charm!

I wasn't going to bother at first since it seemed like a huge hassle, but even though I'm very new at all this I'm quickly slipping into flash junkie mode. I also figured it was worth a try since I've had problems with only getting 1 bar at home, and also some sudden problems with my home wi-fi taking forever to connect and then disconnecting...so thought this might fix it. Seems to so far. 2 bars now and wi-fi holding strong. Haven't tested GPS.

Only slight snag I ran into (using Ubuntu, not Windows), was the last part of the Gordita.sh script didn't complete properly. I have a feeling maybe the sleep 10 part was a bit too short? So the last 2 commands didn't actually get done the first time. But I just pasted them in one-by-one to make sure I saw what was happening and worked perfect.

Cheers!

It's funny you used this in Linux, this was created specifically for those without access to Linux! :D

LMAO yeah I guess that is kind of odd now that you mention it. But hey, you had all the other steps right there and I didn't feel like digging around elsewhere.

... and clear cache and data for messaging app.

How does one do those things?

Do you mean to clear the cache in Recovery?

Where do you "clear the data for messaging app"?

EDIT: OK, found where to clear messaging data and cache under Settings | Applications | Storage Use.
