Root [GUIDE][CTmod] Rooting the Prevail [SPH-M820] for Dummies (written by a dummy)

I'm having a little problem. Odin 4.43 wont reconize my phone but 1.85 will; and is reading it in two ports
0:[COM3] 1:[COM4]

I know my phone is COM4 because device manager told me so. I've re installed all the drivers. Installed samsung kies (because i was told that installs a bunch load of drivers) made sure Kies was not running. Ran as administrator, nothing changed. What do I do?

Thats odd, I've not heard of odin doing that, I would definitely try reinstalling drivers that came with odin, reboot the computer, and try a different cable and/or usb port. And make sure you're not using any usb hubs, or have anything else plugged into the usb thats not necessary. Sometimes something simple like a bad cable can make all the difference

If that doesn't help, go to the odin thread and ask there, those guys are much smarter than me

lots of apps will have an option in their settings to invert the colors for notifications. If its only doing it for a certain app, try checking its settings. If its doing it for all notifications, including the android stuff, you will probably have to reinstall. Make sure that if you use any backup apps, like titanium backup, you don't restore system data from a different or an older rom
 
Sorry for being a pain, but besides the text for ongoing notifications, Can someone find me the stock Prevail ringtones and Notification sounds? my gf was asking, maybe i can just install them? or someone can point me in the right direction. thanks so much everyone!

If you're about to reflash to fix the notifications, maybe you could odin to stock, find all the ringtones you need and save them, then flash your rom. I looked inside the odin packages and I didn't see any easy way to pull them out of there unfortunately.
 
so i have followed the steps up to entering recovery, installing from zip and choosing file from zip, when i choose stick.zip in my files and attempt to install it, it goes through the motions and says that stick.zip is (bad) and aborts the installation, what am i doing wrong?

there shouldn't be a stick.zip. The only zip file flashed in the walkthrough is CTmod.zip, downloaded from the CTmod thread.

Im new to the whole rooting, but Caeadas your walk through was excellent!! I actually had a problem with the data trying to recognize my partition on my sd card, and it write protected my sd card. I went and got a new card and installed the ctmod 3.5 which went right thru. I figured I would let an expert know seeing how I'm the newb here..lol!
Thanks to everyone who worked on this!!!! Great job!!!! :)

Lol i'm an expert at nothing except sticking other peoples hard work into a single post.

I've never heard of our phones write-protecting a SD card. After some googling, it seems to be more of a general issue with SD cards, although Nokia seems to come up a bit. Most solutions involve using the microSD to SDcard adapter with it's write protect switch turned off. Then you can hopefully access the card with your computers reader and reformat it. I used Gparted before for some reason I can't remember. Hmm....
 
For anyone that was waiting yesterday, the new CTmod 3.6 is fixed, download a fresh copy and install it just like in the guide. Remember, installing roms wipes the phone so make backups.
 
OK Maybe im a bigger dummy then most b/c im stuck!! in Installing a Rom and/or kernel with Clockworkmod im stuck on step 1!! Where do I download CTmod, and Koumakernel and how do i get it on my sdCard? I thought i had already done this in the previous chapters but when going to the next step, it tells me no such file or directory.

-Download this

To your computer.
-Open it with 7zip.
-Open the system folder
-click and drag the app(s) you want installed into the system folder.
-Select yes (to copy the apks into the folder)
-Close the zip
-place on sdcard
-install just l like the rom (using cwm)

I am having MAJOR problems with 7 zip!! How the hell do I open the file in it!!? I DLed what u posted and i cant open it i DLed ApkInstaller.zip and cant open it!! WHAT THE HELL!!!??? :confused: :confused: :confused:

Just double click it? Did you install 7zip on your computer? :D
 
Need some help here i get everything done correctly in your thread up until the part right after i flash the rom onto the phone, it just constantly re boots into clockwork, it loads up the kernal then does a reboot shows the samsung logo, then goes into clockwork, thats as far as i can make it and i have re flashed the stock, then rooted, then done it again still not working
 
Great write up and Great job to everyone else involved with this...I was wondering...In the beginning of Chapter Two, you say that we could stop here and with Superuser delete bloatware..how do we do that if we want to keep Prevail like stock but remove stuff that's unwanted?
