Root Boot menu questions

I have a 2 year old evo with booting issues.
I've been reading stuff all morning and have just become more confused.
Last year I did some stuff to my phone but don't remember exactly. I followed some instructions somewhere. I know I installed clockwork and tried a couple of different roms. About a year ago I had some rebooting problems. I changed the rom and then decided it was the battery and replaced the battery. Now the rebooting is really bad and a couple of days ago I installed ss_stock_4.67.651 using the clockwork that was already on my phone.

Is hboot the one that came with my phone or is that something I replaced? I have 0.79.0000

Is the clockwork recovery I have a replacement for the stock recovery that came with the phone? How do I put the original recovery back?

Is FASTBOOT something I added?

Tell me if I have this right. The hboot loads a particular image file with a file name that is particular to my phone. I can't find any instructions that seem to match the way I remember doing it. Is that flashing?

The hboot on my phone runs and switches back and forth between HBOOT USB, HBOOT, and HBOOT PLUG. I can't seem to figure out how this happens. I'm beginning to think the buttons themselves are broken.

welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

well hboot .79 is an old hboot. i have not seen one for a while. it is something that can only be replaced by accepting an ota (which you should never do while you are rooted) or using a ruu (rom utility updater) to update your phone. but for you there is no need to change your hboot.

can you get into recovery from the bootloader?

and i would really recommend that you switch recoveries to amon ra2.3. it is a much better recovery then clockwork mod.

i would really suggest that you read the http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...ooting-dummies-guide-gingerbread-edition.html. skip the rooting process and go to the after root section. it has a ton of info there that will help you and hopefully answer your questions.

Thanks. I think you are saying that the hboot I have is most likely the one that came with my phone. Is that correct?

I suppose I was lucky in that after my first application of a ROM it never would take the OTA updates from Sprint.

I've read that the EVO reboot problem is most likely a hardware issue and am considering setting my phone back to stock and then paying the $100 to get a new one. (I don't know why I didn't cancel that protection plan. $8 time 24 months and then they want me to pay $100. Grrr)

I've tried running the RUU but it won't work for some reason. I was able to get the phone into HBOOT USB and seemed like it started to work, but then said something about downloading the correct RUU for my phone. Of all the RUU guides I read only one said I needed to have the phone in HBOOT USB.

Is fastboot something that I would have replaced when I put on the ROM or does it just stay factory?

Also, I saw watermarking mentioned where even if you put s to s-off they can see that you had it on s-on at one time and then deny a claim.

You dont have to worry about watermarks. Thats only for the people who have been accepting the OTA's.

If I were you I would try flashing a different ROM onto the phone to see if that fixes your rebooting issue before trying to unroot it. Flashing a new ROM will basically clear out any software issues. Then if the problem is still there you know its hardware and the phone needs replaced.

Switch your recovery to amon ra and make a nandroid with the link OCN gave you and then give MikG 3.11 a go.

Instructions for flashing a ROM:
Download the ROM:http://bit.ly/xyKhAh
Download superwipe: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/63060876/ZZZVR_SUPERWIPE.zip

Reboot into your recovery
Choose wipe
Wipe all of the following:
all data/factory reset
Data
Cache
Dalvik cache
System
Boot
SD-android.secure
SD-EXT

Following that back out to the main menu and select flash zip menu
choose zip from sd
Flash the Superwipe file
Flash MIkG 3.11

Finished

yes your hboot is most likely the original hboot that came with the phone.

not sure what you mean by fastboot. there are two versions of fastboot. with gingerbread, htc added a fastboot function where you can sort of put the phone in sleep mode and you can then power the phone on without having to go through the boot up procedure. then there is the fastboot option in the bootloader which is where you can use fastboot commands if you have adb setup on your computer.

and as far as watermarking goes, that is for phones that have the latest ota installed. it will have a watermark where at the top of the bootloader screen it will say either locked or unlocked and you will have to go to HTCdev to get the bootloader unlocked.

i would try what rxpert mentioned and just flash a rom. if the issue still persists then try flashing a ruu and see if that helps. and the ruu will only work if you are using the right one. it has to match either your hboot you are on now or a higher version. do you remember which one you tried?

Since I have a very old hboot then shouldn't just about any of them work?
This is what I installed.
ss_stock_4.67.651

Is the "bootloader" "locked" the same as s-on or do you mean something different? I thought the water mark was something that was set so that if you turned s=off and then turned s=on to get warranty repair then they could tell that at one time you had set it to s=off. (I have s=on now so I'm not sure if I ever turned it off.)

I think I have both of the fastboot options you are talking about. I remember setting something to make it boot faster and I have a fastboot option in the boot menu.

I'm also having difficulty finding something that explains the relationship between roms, bootloaders, and radios.

Here's a thread about the official bootloader unlock that recommends you just use s=on and s=off instead.
HTCDev bootloader unlock - don't do it - xda-developers
I don't know enough about it to know what they are talking about, but I got the impression that if you unlock the bootloader than you could relock it and htc wouldn't know or is this where the watermark comes in?

Do you know which OTA locks the bootloader?

no the bootloader being locked is slightly different. the s-on means that the phone's securities is turned on. this is your phone's protection so that anything considered malicious will not make changes to your system partitions without permission. so having s-on is actually a good thing. however, htc has provided us a backdoor so to speak so that you can unlock the bootloader without having to turn your securities from s-on to s-off.

all of this though would be if you used a ruu for 4.67 or accepted the latest ota (which i will never ever recommend).

roms are software that runs the android operating system. it is what runs the phone. the current android os for the evo officially is gingerbread. we will most likely never get the latest android os, ice cream sandwhich, or ICS. however, we have custom roms out now that have ics working, but they still need some work to do.

the bootloader is kind of like a mini os that runs on the evo. there are three os the can run on the evo, but not all at the same time. you have the main android os, then you have the bootloader and lastly you have your custom recovery. the primary function of the bootloader is to check for any update files which are named PC36IMG.zip. if the bootloader does not detect it then you are given a few options.

radios are just that. they are what gives your phone access to the nearest sprint towers. a word of warning though, flashing radios is one way you could easily brick your phone. the main thing is that whatever you do, DO NOT PULL THE BATTERY OUT. that will brick your phone. also there is a very small possibility that when you are flashing radios, you could loose your wimax keys which gives you 4g.

hope this helps.

you are already rooted so i would not recommend that you go this route.

I'm not exactly sure what you mean. I'm assuming you mean I don't want a newer RUU or OTA that will give me a locked bootloader. Somewhere I saw a list of ROM versions, but it did not say what each one did.
What criteria would I use for choosing an RUU? How does one decide which RUU to use?

On another thread I saw someone tell someone else that their bootloader was in RUU mode. Is that HBOOT USB?

You are already rooted and S-off, so none of that applies to you

If I install the wrong RUU or OTA or the guy at the Sprint store installs a newer RUU or OTA then it just might apply to me.

I'm also concerned about my options when I get my new phone.

There's also the issue of understanding what's going on instead of just following everyones step by step instructions only to later be chastised for doing things without understanding what's going on.

Will I need s=off to follow your instructions?
I can't remember for sure if I ever had s=off. (I think it's set to s=on now.)

I think the regular unrevoked removes some security without turning s=off, but the website is confusing.

Do I understand this correctly?
There are two ways to flash.
1. The custom recovery, e.g. clockwork, can read a file and write it's contents to a variety of partitions.
2. hboot can read a file that has been renamed to to a particular filename related to the device. (I found a thread that told someone to not use a zip file here. I can't remember why.)

When you flash a file it can be a ROM that typically contains software but not a new kernel, but may or may not contain other files like new radio binaries or not?

When you flash a radio is that done with the custom recovery or hboot?

Yes there are 2 ways to flash, with recovery being the main way, but H-boot is used for recoveries, spashscreens, bootanimations, radios, ect

Every ROM will contain a kernel, but most of the time it is the stock kernel unless noted otherwise. Most ROMS also do not contain new radios, but it is possible to do

Radios are typically done through H-boot

You can easily check to see if you are S-ON or S-off by rebooting to your H-boot screen. Pull the battery, put it back in, and hold power+volume down.

As long as you have access to a recovery you can follow my directions

I apologize, you are correct. Most people around here just want the step by step directions but I'll be happy to explain everything as best I can

That link is NOT for our phones. Everything in the world of rooting is very phone specific, so dont follow advice meant for other devices.

The HTC DEV tool works perfectly fine for our EVOS. The only limitation to it is that you cannot flash things through H-boot because you will still have s-on. Therefore updating radios can be a pain, but there are usually minimal differences noted between radios

And I didn't mean to sound pissy. With the pages and pages of threads and guides and wikis ......

I'm sure the one you gave me will work just fine, but I wanted to see what I can find.
I found the superswipe thread by the author. The first post has been edited to talk about the latest version. (Which for someone who finds this post through a search in the future may no longer be the latest version.)

A note on your linked thread, though - that post is not in an EVO 4G forum. The mount points for each device may not be the same, so using the Superwipe zip that was linked in this thread is the best way to go. I'm not saying it won't work, but it could mess up your mount points and make things worse for you.

The link for version 2 of that superwipe is also on megaupload which is no more. The superwipe we have in the all root forum is a valid download.

One of the many links in that thread was good. I got it and the sums matched, but I'll use Rxpert83's.
