Root How To Root HTC Evo 4G 2.3.5

what rom are you on? some roms have a2sd built in so that all you would have to do is partition your card and then your aps will automatically be moved.

ok this is what i would do:
  • make a backup of your card on your pc
  • get titanium backup and then back all of your apps and data. DO NOT BACKUP any system apps (they will be in red).
  • go into recovery and make a nandroid backup (if you have not done one already)
  • partition your card
  • then ONLY wipe dalvik cache and cache
  • re-flash your rom
if your rom does not have a2sd then i would do a full wipe and re-flash the rom and restore your apps with tb. then flash dark tremors and then command the apps to the card.

I have the mikg3.11 rom. I am going to go back up everything now...

I did as your guide said to...worked great. After flashing the rom, loaded TB, restored apps, and now I am using 58mb on internal storage and have 388 mb free internal mem.

Now I just need to decide if I want to go to s-off. From what I understand, being on 2.3.5 with 2.18 hboot, I can't flash kernels? But if I go to s-off, I won't be able to update radios? Plus if I need to take the phone in for any reason, then being to the s-off, it is easier to unroot. I currently have insurance. Just wondering if I should keep it now...decisions decisions...lol

I have been worried about this

welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!
your baseband is your radio and not you hboot version. to find out what hboot you have. power the phone off then press and hold power+vol down (make sure that fastboot is disabled, settings>apps>uncheck fastboot). this will take you to the bootloader. at the top of the screen will be your hboot version. if it is hboot 2.18 then you can use this guide:http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...ooting-dummies-guide-gingerbread-edition.html

I have a basic understanding of the rooting process as I rooted a nook color successfully.

But what I'm having trouble with is deciding what ROM to use...

I don't mind sense but want a rom that will make the phone stable and fast. I tried CM7 on the Nook Color and didn't like it.

My main reason for rooting is to get rid of all the bloatware. I am having problems keeping more than 40 or 50mb free on my Evo and hope that if I root and get rid of all of these (and some I probably forgot to mention) that I'll have enough space:

Nascar
Sprint TV
Kindle
Adobe Reader
Football
QuickOffice
Blockbuster
Footprints
FM Radio
Friendstream
Latitude
Nova
Qik
SprintZone
Voicemail
Weather

I only see Rom's based on Gingerbread or ICS. I haven't seen a rom based on Honeycomb yet....

Am I correct in thinking that I want a ROM where the developer is still active? That would rule out roms like Sprintlovers, right?

Is there any Rom that is basically a stock HTC Evo experience without all the bloatware but WITH Wifi-N and Wifi-Tether working? And maybe have the trickle charging of the batter work properly?

Thanks

well honeycomb is for tablets only. there was a work in progress for a honeycomb rom. not really sure what happened to it.

i think that the best rom out right now is still mikg3.11. it is based off of the latest ota and it has sense 2.1 and sense 3.0 cooked in. plus it has all of the bloatware removed. another great one is tommy's classic evo though not sure of his site is up again with working links for his roms.

as far as trickle charge, that will depend on the kernel you use. there are now a few custom kernels that has sbc (superior batter charge) cooked in.

Ok, that make sense... I don't have to have honeycomb, just didn't understand why I wasn't seeing phone roms based on it.

BTW, Honeycomb is also working on GoogleTV as well as tablets...

I'm looking at mikg right now. Is this the official forum:

v3.xx ??

A few questions...

From the read through it looks like I'll lose 4G with this ROM. That's not a huge deal for me. I might turn 4G on twice a month max.

Thanks! So to be clear, after I flash the rom, then I can install a kernel that would have SBC?

Also, I found this set of instructions for installing MikG:

Can we flash over the old ROM?

Is there anything there that is significantly different than what is recommended in the Dummies Guide ?

I couldn't detect anything different, but I'm not confident that I haven't missed something.

Thanks!
Doug

1.mikg is sense and most of the sense roms will have 4g working. the only ones so far is the sense 3.5 rom0s, since they are based off of a phone that does not use wimax technology. and here is the link for mikg3.11(the current version)MikG v3.11 [3/9/2012]. download the full wipe version.

2.yes you can flash a custom kernel that has sbc tech built in.

3.and yes you can use that link in order to know how to flash a rom. i would also recommend that you read this guide:http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...ooting-dummies-guide-gingerbread-edition.html. just skip the rooting part and go to the after root section. it info on how to make a nandroid backup, to partitioning your sd card to fhow to flash a rom.

The one click option is what I'm looking for. Does anyone know with the Z4 root will work or how do I downgrade to a version that will work with it. I follow directions well, but from reading the potential problems, I'm still looking for a one click method, preferably temporary. I want to root for one thing only, wifi hotspot that would only be used rarely.

unfortunately z4 will not work anymore. with each new ota the previous exploit gets closed up. so the exploit used to gain root with z4 will not work anymore.

if you have the latest gingerbread ota 4.67 then you will need to use this guide:http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...-rooting-gingerbread-2-3-5-dummies-guide.html

Im new to this forum/rooting. My friend just told me about it bc i was complaining about my EVO. I want to root it to the newest O.S, but i have no idea what to do, nor do I know what all I am supposed to "get" as far as for when I do root my EVO. Help please?!

well i would start by reading this guide:http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...-rooting-gingerbread-2-3-5-dummies-guide.html as it sounds like you might be up to date as far as any ota's that have been released. if u have not taken any recent ota's then the guide will at least point you to the right guide that will apply to you.

as far as what does rooting give you well:
1.it allows you to make any changes that you want to your phone.
2. you can increase performance and battery life by flashing a kernel which in turns will allow you to over and underclock your phone.
3. you can customize your phone by flashing the many custom roms that are out there. you can even get ICS (icecream sandwhich) on to your phone! as well as getting rid of sense completely by flashing aosp (android open source project) roms.
4.bloatware removal
5.use the hacked sprint hotspot and also wireless tether
6.flash themes and mods
7.partition your sd card so that your apps will be completely on the card. the current gingerbread apps2sd does not move the whole app to the card. only parts of it is moved, the rest stays on the phone.
8.i'm sure that there are other things that i'm forgetting, but forgive me it is late. lol

main thing to is read and ask as many questions that you need before you attempt to root. maybe even print out the guide to help you out. skipping steps is not recommended and can make things much more difficult.

hope this helps. now go and get your root on:D

So I'm brand new to trying to root my phone and I don't really know all the technical language but I want to root my phone. I saw the previous forums about using the updated gingerbread root but using the htcdev doesn't allow s-off and isn't that something that I should get when rooting?

Welcome to the AF!
Using htcdev method unlocks your bootloader and yes, you still have s-on.
But that's not a bad thing, you can still flash custom roms, get rid of Sprint bloatware (nascar, football etc).
Being s-off involvs a little more in depth knowledge, and once you get familiar with flashing etc, you can do that later.
Feel free to ask about anything you do not understand...that's why you're here....:D
Been there my friend, about 6 months ago...knew nothing but learned alot here:)

Haha thank you, it's pretty intimidating seeing all the lingo being shot out from everyone but I appreciate your encouragement. When I go to the bootloader screen to check the hboot do I have to go through with the root from there or can I get out of there without going through with it? How long does it take to go through will the whole root?

Just follow the htcdev method....and I'll link the guide in a minute....
If you are in bootloader screen now, you can choose to just reboot or power down, I forget....
I'll post the link in a sec.
(yeah the terms are overwhelming, but the more you read, the more you know, trust me...I'm just a lousy mechanic that likes to play with my phone:))

S off is really only needed for hiding the fact that you've rooted the phone or updating the phones radios.

You can still do everything else with s-on

It's still possible to un root it though right? Even with S-on? And is HTC Sync 3.0.5551 the same as HTC Sync 3.0.5617. When I tried downloading the HTC Sync from the link it didn't let me save it so I don't know if that means I already have it??

When you click on the htc sync link, it should've brought you to a mediafire site where the file is, click on download and it should auto download to your computer....then find that download, (in your download folder?)..then double click on it....I think if its not the current updated sync, it will prompt you to update...
It is still possible to un-root the phone but you shouldnt need to.:)

Will this completely void my warranty for good or is still possible to have my warranty if I needed to return my phone for something?

Yes it will void your warranty, but I think Sprint has a new policy that is a little more lenient towards rooted phones. If I could find that policy, I will send you a link

Lets clear something up.

This Voids your HTC manufacturer warranty. It does not prevent you from getting service done on the phone either through sprint or the insurance company.

I haven't even heard of anyone trying to use their HTC warranty, so its really not a big deal.

When I am in the command prompt it says waiting on device after I have done everything, what am I supposed to do?? I've done the steps leading up to that and it's not reading my phone or something, any help? :/
