What am I missing in order to get to Nandroid to backup before flashing this ROM? I miss the step by step days. As I get older, less of this makes sense.

You need a custom recovery. I recommend the TWRP recovery. Once you have a custom recovery just boot into it. Select backup and check off the things you want to backup.

Sorry my friend, I'm working out of town, so I haven't had time to post a step by step yet. My apologies. :o

Ok, I'll assume you've rooted fully with HTCdev and have a recovery, if not you'll need to go here and follow this thread for root, recovery, busybox and SuperUser permissions:
[ROOT] RegawMOD EVO 4G LTE Rooter | Updated 06.04.12 - xda-developers

This is a one click root solution by regaw_leinad over at XDA. it does it all for you. ;):)

Remember to read the entire OP!! Make sure you download all the files and follow the instructions, it's pretty easy.

I'll add another reminder here as regaw has it in his tutorial, make sure you reset GoogleWallet prior to running the root method. This is to ensure your NFC chip doesn't get borked.

Also not this will wipe your phone, so make sure you back up all of your info prior to running this tool.

Once you've achieved root, go under Settings / Power / Fastboot uncheck that sucka!

Download the rom you want and place it on the root of your SD card.

Ok, then power the phone down completely, it can take a hot minute, so be patient. Then you'll need to boot into hboot. It's not as easy as it was on the OG evo, it can be tempermental. The best way to explain it is by going here for a great post by novoxx:
http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-lte-all-things-root/560025-solution-post-4-how-get-h-boot.html

Hold volume down, the press and hold the power for a second or two, then let go of just the power button, continue to hold the volume button down. Ka-pow!! hboot.

I found a tutorial from nick1313 over at themikmik, he's also a friend over here, good Dood. :)

http://themikmik.com/showthread.php?12987-GUIDE-TUTORIAL-How-to-Flash-Custom-Rom-(TWRP)

Select recovery
Select backup

Once the NANDroid is done select wipe and wipe everything except the sd and sd_2 (Someone help me here, I'm not 100% sure how it's shown in recovery).
Select install and find the rom file you placed on your SD card. You'll need to navigate to your physical SD card, not the internal.

Let the file flash, then reboot. Should work just fine!!

If you hit any problems, post back, we'll get you rolling. :)

Been running 5.1.1 for about a day. I'll give it a few days to settle, but I'm really enjoying the stock experience with a few tweaks.

Rooted with RegawMOD
Nandroided with TWRP 2.1.8
Backed up apps/data with Titanium Backup
Installed FRESH 5.1.1 on top of stock ROM. With a cache and dalvik cache wipe.
Did not do a data wipe.

If you have any questions or anything...ask away.

I just rooted yesterday and plugged in the Fresh Rom, but for some reason the soft key remap and 7 in 1 power menu isn't there (main reason I wanted this). I'm a complete noob as I have never rooted before, I am enjoying it though. Any help on this would be great!
Seriously though, can't thank everyone enough for all the great info here!

Did you flash (install) Fresh ROM using TWRP (Recovery)?

If so, did you wipe "Cache" and/or "Dalvik Cache" before flashing Fresh?

Which is here, [RECOVERY][EVO4GLTE][5/27/12] TWRP 2.1.6 - TeamWinRecoveryProject - /misc fixed

But I would also assume the CWM would also a recovery for this device, I am sure that Granite will chime in here. My preferred is 4EXT, but not sure it is available for the LTE as of yet.

Right now, TWRP is the way to go because you can flash kernels and radios from recovery, despite having s-on.

I'm sure the others may catch up soon (or may already have) but fwiw, I vote TWRP for capability and maturity of functions here.

As Granite said, TWRP 2.1.8 is latest.

I used the recovery mode from the bootloader, if that's not right, I'm all ears lol. It seems to have removed a lot of bloat, and I found the directory for the apk files it removed, but can't seem to fine the power menu its supposed to have and button remapping hasn't taken. Do I need to try again? I did clear the cache and davlik files as well.

If those options are included in the latest release, no reason to believe otherwise :), I would redownload the Rom, and completely wipe the phone from recovery and reflash.

I've had issues like this on my OG EVO when I didn't wipe properly. Things get a little stinky. :D

OYhey Rock
It comes with the ICS keyboard available too. I like it. They removed where the 'select input' icon comes up when you long press a text field. I don't know exactly how they worded it, but that is one of the 'features' :p

I went to keyboard and turned on the Ics keyboard but I can't figure out how to make it default.

I can't figure out how to turn the other one off either.

i am reluctant to install another keyboard because i already have one and can't get to it! :o

Edit: when I clicked on swype option, IT gave me the option to select input method in this rom I'm trying now. Prob same in Fresh.

I havent changed my keyboards yet, so I was a little unclear exactly how to change the defaults. Thanks for posting up your solution! ;)

how do we check if we are on the updated Fresh ? I look under "about" and it says "fresh LTE 5.0.0".
I've flashed the 5.1.1 multiple times but I don't see anything different. And, the goo mgr keeps telling me there is an update available . . . I've downloaded a new copy of 5.1 and flashed it too . . .
I have NOT completely wiped phone and then flashed. . . maybe I need to?
Thanks!

IF installing a ROM over itself a complete wipe isn't necessary. What should be wiped though is CACHE and DALVIC. Data should be ok to keep and System will be wiped by the Install (Maybe not a complete wipe but an OVERWRITE) If you have problems with a newer version that is "Full" then wipe system and allow it to rewrite.

Thanks for that info . . .but how do I tell on my phone if I'm running the most current version of Fresh?
