Eris to v2.x, when?

You know what pisses me off more than forum members trying to predict firmware release dates? Blogs trying to predict firmware release dates. Oh, but I can't help it!! These rumors are so much fun.

BTW: Verizon might also be waiting till Skype is ready to be released and package it with the 2.1 OTA.

Don't think its that likely, but some food for thought.

The official announcement of the OTA release for Eris was quoted as "before the end of Q1;" that would fall within the days mentioned in my post.

From the "phone arena" website:

"Verizon spokesperson Brenda Raney said, "The Droid Eris currently using Android 1.5, can and will be upgraded to newer Android operating system software in first quarter 2010."

Frisco's right. The official time is Q1 for the eris as of this time. Nothing has changed.

As far as the moto droid (as if anybody on this thread cares) when I left at 3:30 est today, the updates were still supposed to roll out today.

but then again, things can change by the minute in this industry. who knows what ill see inthe morning.

no. skype will be made available by Verizon thru the market for droids and appworld for crackberries

I'm so sick of waiting for OTA 2.1! Why don't they just come out and say "Hey we are dumb and can't fix it in the time frame we said sorry.." Then people would be pissed off but at least we'd know what was going on! why did they let the Droid users know it would be postponed but not us!?

"Hey we are dumb and can't fix it in the time frame we said sorry.."

Well, that's not exactly the case, although something along those lines, I gather.

It seems to have something to do with incompatibilities between the device manufacturer, the carriers and their ability to have servers capable of handling the OTA, and the differences between the Android-based devices they are developing the updates for.

The details of all that escape me, but I have seen it reported on the various geek sites and blogs and a post or two in here about it from apparently knowledgeable people.

For those complaining about 2 year contracts, check out VZ's 1 year terms next time around.

My wife & I were looking to come back to the VZ network, and wanting to get nice discounts on smart phones. We could have paid $80 each per Eris on 2 year agreements, but instead chose to pay $130 per Eris, in exchange for 1 year agreements. So that $50 "extra" I paid now, will definitely reward me when 60 days before my contract end date (10 months from my start date), I can re-sign to another 1 year term, and get same discount phone pricing as a new customer, like I just did. 10 months later, rinse & repeat. Then 10 months later... you get the idea.

I confirmed this through 4 or 5 calls to various VZ CS reps, who confirmed many detailed questions from me about this exact scenario, because I knew I wouldn't want my Eris for more than about 1 year. Phones are improving so fast right now.

wtf not cool. I should have looked into this. I'd totally rather spend 50$ extra to have a 1 year deal. I think all smart phones should have 1 year deals with the way tech moves -.-

This is what I did, as well... The 2-year upgrade price of the Eris was gonna cost me $79, and I ended up only paying $129 for a 1-year. So come September of this year I'll be eligible for an upgrade again (if I chose to go that route), and completely off-contract in November. My intention is to never be "on contract" again, hopefully more carriers will come-around to what T-Mobile is doing -- but if not, *shrugs*, T-Mo has good coverage around here and I don't travel, so, whatever ;)

K, I got off topic... My bad. I mostly wanted to just say Hi and subscribe to this thread ;) ha ha.

Had a nice chat with a long time Verizon Tech this morning and he flat out said that "there are still a few minor bugs in the 2.1 and Verizon is not going to release a buggy firmware upgrade. Period."

I'm frustrated too but just so you know, they didn't purposely tell the users that there would be no update. The info of an update being put off was from a picture taken of a computer screen that was supposed to be internal Verizon info (may be fake all the way around). So at best, it was leaked info.

Dunno if you guys got this, but it appears VZW is still pushing out 2.1 to the Droid. The bug fix rumors appear to be false. They're just getting rolled out slowly.

That's good news for Droid owners.

Heck of a bunch, those Droid owners.

Which would not surprise me in the least. It's not too difficult to fake the update being delayed on a computer screen.

seriously delayed? wtf! i spoke to an htc representative about 2 weeks ago (I didn't jot down the name..next time) who told me the update would be out by the end of the month. I need epocrates (a pdr app only available with the 1.5 or greater firmware). he explained to me that the droid had the firmware out already but not the eris, b/c it had so many different interfaces that it would take time for these to be adjusted...my hubby has the droid, i got the droid eris for free when he bought his!

Hey Verizon, I'm pissed off, fix it...let's go! Enough screwing around...I may just go over to AT&T...

p.s. i forgot to mention that before i spoke to the htc representative, several days earlier i had spoken to a verizon representative who called htc for me and said the update was available on the htc website...well it turned out to be for a sync update and not the firmware...the verizon representative didn't even understand the concept of firmware...whereas us relatively lay ppl have 74 pages of posts on this issue...yep i'm in cyclical venting right now....I'M PISSED OFF! I hate crap...y'all, other profesions get sued for making mistakes like this!

Reply from HTC customer service rep. Nothing new.

"I apologize for the little information that we have, but unfortunately we do not have the exact date this will be sent Over-the Air to your device. The only thing we can say is that it will be at the end of the First quarter, keep an eye out for Notifications on your device."

Hope mongering at its worst.

:D

Ok, so as I understand it, based on information from the multitude of threads on this issue, we should **technically** recieve this OTA this Friday since updates are always released on Friday and because the end of Q1 is on a Wednesday. What is the likelyhood that this will actually happen? My money's on slim to none.
