Root Google wallet apk fix

This method worked on my BRICKED google wallet! I have not taken it to a store and verified that I can use it but I was able to get into Wallet for the first time and even add funds to it.

What do you mean bricked wallet?

Did you get locked out of your secure element? I don't think this method is designed or supposed to fix that, so I am interested.

Indeed very interesting.
I wonder if OMJ just added the build.prop fix or if this is something else entirely?

Have to parouse that thread and see what I can see....

PS: I too use bork for certain things. ;)

I thought the same thing, but it's something else entirely. Per OMJ -

Here is a patched version of Wallet. I've tested & it works great. This patched version removes the device check, the operator check, and the root warning.
I checked the deodexed installer - it has the apk that it installs to /system/app and sets permissions on it - that's it, no build.prop tweaking at all.

Is it really confirmed that nothing essential has been tweaked in this version? This is a financial-type app so I'm very hesitant. I really don't want to open myself up to any forms of identity theft.
Yeah, feels kinda creepy using a tampered app for financial transactions. It sure would be nice to finally use Google Wallet though.

The Swedish Chef agrees and wants to know if the wallet is okey dokey.

So, I've asked a pal to see if he could assist me in some verification steps.

Not sure how that will, or even if it ought to, play out. I can imagine ways to for programmers to verify differences, but the question remains - where's the point of trust? From OMJ to another name on the internet? Tricky problem.

This totally worked for me! Google just bought me cigarettes and tea for $8.34. But the look on the cashier's face was priceless!

yeah, I just flashed the latest mean rom, and mikey has rigged it so it's working now. he says it's a combo of app tweaking and build.prop...whatever it is I got my free ten bucks finally.

now I'm just going to have to remember to wipe this thing before flashing any new roms. I think I'll put a sticky note on my monitor

build.prop tweaks means that the phone doesn't say the truth about what it is - and can mess with the s-off flash, for example. The build.prop tweaks have been around for months.

The mod mentioned here doesn't resort to that.

right, and I'm not exactly sure what he did, but I know it wasn't the normal 'trick you into thinking I'm a nexus' method. my build.prop says htc_jewel, and my ffc isn't borked.

I do know that he said he wasn't going to use the simple build.prop tweak precisely to avoid those issues, so I dunno what all he did, and I don't think he's expounded upon it yet.

edit. never mind. my front facing camera is indeed now red. weird that the face to unlock isn't though. I'm wiping wallet and fixing the build.prop I guess. at least I got my ten bucks

Guys,

Just wanted to add a quick note about this. Installing any modded non-Market (Play Store) app might be a risky endeavor since you might not really know everything that was changed and/or if the changes were fully tested and integrates properly with the rest of the app's behavior (i.e., making the assumption that the original app's authors would also do so ;)).

I have spent some time over the last several nights (it look longer than I thought it would ;)) doing comparisons/analysis of the .apk file against the version available from the Play Store (although I actually used version 12 (1.1-R67-v12) for the comparisons). The changes that I saw in the patched .apk are indeed in-line with the comments that Paul O'Brien (from MoDaCo) indicates here (Region / Device / Root Patched Google Wallet APK (1.1-R67-v12) - Android Software - MoDaCo):

The APK has 3 features that I patched out. The first was a device check - the app will now work on any device. Of course you need to have NFC for it to be useful! I tested on a HTC One X successfully (as you can see in the screenshots above) but of course YMMV. The second patch was an operator check - the app should now not care which operator you are on. The third patch was removing the root warning. Google Wallet doesn't actually stop you using the app if you're rooted, it just gives you a warning on screen (which is a little annoying), so I removed it. BUT... rather than having the warning in app, let me post it here instead. If you are using Google Wallet on a rooted device, really think about which apps you are giving root access... because there is the possibility that a malicious app could do bad things. There's no evidence of this happening, but it's possible. As always, be wary of what you're installing and where it came from.

Personally, I have the utmost respect and trust for Paul O'Brien (MoDaCo) [who patched the app] and for OMJ [created the flashable .zip], but you'll have to decide for yourself if the risk is worth the reward.

As always, caveat emptor ("let the buyer beware").

Also, for those interested in probably the best document ever produced regarding Android app permissions and security awareness, please have a look at this thread:

http://androidforums.com/android-applications/36936-android-permissions-explained-security-tips-avoiding-malware.html

By the way, I'm an app dev myself (see links in my signature) and have a great interest in root-related things and the security and welfare of our AF membership and the Android community in general (i.e., all of my "paid" (donate) apps are, in fact, identical to their free versions that were all created to give-back / contribute to the Android community (and because they were fun to do, of course :))).

Cheers and please let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks, scary alien! :)

FWIW, I asked sa to look into this for those interested in the provenance of this mod.

scary alien is alsoalostpacket the dev of Pocket Permissions - and although he's too shy to mention all of his work, I thought that those interested in security would especially be interested in that one.

So is this the only fix if you are getting the "...not supported on your carrier or device..." message?

No, this was a temporary fix.

The 1.22 update fixed that issue - if you go with a 1.22-based rom, such as Viper4G or others, you don't need this fix.

In fact, it's preferable to not take this fix with newer roms.

This thread is headed for the lock... will leave it open a little longer.
