Root The Frustration is Mounting

Newbie
I'm running the most current mik rom MikG v3.11 [3/9/2012]. Didn't change the Kernel. Rooted with UnRevoked. I've been rooted for some time now but I just can't seem to find a stable Rom. I've tried multiple AOSP Roms such as Cyanogen and MIUI to name a couple, but I gave up on AOSP, my phone just didn't seem to like them, totally unstable.

Then I started using MikG (Sense based). It was an older version and don't remember which one. Other than the occasional boot screen it was okay. I decided to update to v3.11, worst mistake of my life. Boot screen after boot screen, day in day out. I did all my cache wipes like I was supposed to and even tried redownloading and reflashing the Rom to make sure my .zip wasn't corrupted. It didn't matter. Now I can't even perform a Nandroid Backup... "Oops. Something went wrong." I can't use the keyboard to type into any text fields either.

I just want something stable but I guess that is too much to ask from my phone, maybe it just doesn't like being rooted. Or I'm a total dumbass, which I doubt. Any suggestions will help, if not I'm going back to stock and unrooting. Thanks everyone.

Oh, and I forgot to mention my battery life sucks :P

Are you wiping everything except sd card?
I usually wipe 3 times
What recovery are you using to flash?
Are you checking the md5 of the .zip? (it usually matches but sometimes a glitch occurs).
What size/class sd card do you have?
:)

I wiped everything 3 times.
The recovery I use is ra supersonic.
Not sure what md5 means.
I don't know what class sd card it is. It is the stock one that came with my phone. What can I do if my card is corrupted?

If your sd card is corrupted, not sure but, you may have to format it.
There is a way to take card out and put in a card reader into computer and run a chkdsk command but I not clear on how to do that.

Which version of RA are you using? If not, you should definitely get the latest mod by smelkus (v4.3) [RECOVERY][MOD][1-June-2012] RA-supersonic-v4.3-smelkusMOD - xda-developers

Reformat and partition your sd card. If you're running sense roms make an ext 3 partition. Size between 512-1024MB. You do that by making ext2 > ext3.
If you're running AOSP then ext4. However if you switch between Sense and AOSP stick with ext3

Before doing any of this make sure to back up all your vital data as it will wipe your sd card completely.

Then try flashing the ROMs. My opinion :smokingsomb:

You might've done all this already!

Before going to formatting the card go to a windows machine and run check disk:
chkdsk x: /f /r
Replace x with the drive letter this will fix file system errors and check the freespace for bad sectors. If you have bad sectors best thing to do is backup what you can and replace the card.

Not all issues are the ROM some times apps reak more havoc on a system then the ROM itselfyou may need to go through your apps until you find the real culprit

Yeah. That's it! Knew I read that somewhere. Thanks argedion! :D

I'm not sure what ext2 3 4 means. I'm pretty sure my RA is 2.something :/
I'll get the latest and greatest and wipe everything again.

Basically its a partition of your sdcard that acts as an extension of your internal storage. You won't see it as a visible partition. If your using a ROM with a2sd baked in then you will see a lot more internal storage available as apps will be moved here. Ext2 is the oldest, 4 the newest. You can find out details on wiki amongst other places.
Some, not all, newer ROMs recommend partitioning when flashing them, especially the latest ICS Roms.

Mine cam stock with 8GB class 4.

To be honest this is really becoming complicated. I have the capacity to learn this stuff but I have been at this for hours and my brain hurts. The learning curve for this android stuff is just astronomical. I'm really thinking I can't do this anymore.

nonsense. if you can tie your shoes then you can do this. Our problem is we tend to want it NOW and sometimes we really just need to be patient. At moment I would just concentrate on getting the phone working with an acceptable state. Not all ROMS are created equal. So we must learn to use what we have and then start figuring out how to "Wake it up" to the things we want. First rule of thumb when your getting frustrated, that is the time that you just want to relax and do some reading. Don't try anything as it will only enhance the frustration. It's a known fact that the more frustrated you are the less you remember to do there for creating more stress which yep you guessed it causes more frustration. Running through means you really don't get to see the "Flowers" so slow down and lets deal with one thing at a time. There are several ROMs out that IMHO are better than MikG. Mik is nice but kind of reminds me of the old "AOL" sometimes just offering way to much and thats worse than getting to little.

Lets get back to the basics a rooted stock rom is fine. yes its more limited but sometimes its best to be bound to a few limits until we are ready to move on. I would go a head an just remove everything from the SDCARD and then format it from the phone. (Don't worry about a partition at this point we can work our way there) Put back on the card only the essential stuff (Personal Files, Music, Movies, Pictures) Don't put back any program data nor Nandroids. Sync the phone with google to get back your contacts. Download only a few essential Apps. Remember we just want to keep it simple. We can build off of this better than we can tear down the complex.

REMEMBER if you feel yourself getting Frustrated walk away play a video game check out the fine next door neighbour washing her car etc. Allow yourself time to relax and chill before going back to the phone. And there is one more important aspect you must never forget. YOU HAVE US ON YOUR SIDE. Some of the best and brightest android users in the world call this place home. So remember YOU ARE NOT ALONE. ALWAYS FEEL FREE TO ASK.

Indeed you are the gurus and much thanks. Well I did just about everything you suggested and I'm back on a stock rooted rom. Seems to be good so far. No random boot screeens, no drained battery life out of no where. I'll update after work.

Which stock rooted ROM are you running (out of curiosity)?

Please do we want to help you get the maximum out of your phone but first we need to learn what it likes and what it don't like. Remember when you learned to walk you took baby steps the same applies here.

I am running the STOCK 4.67.651.3 Odexed

I'm not sure what to make of all this, but it's been great all day. I haven't had a single hiccup. Not sure where to go from here though. ?

If your happy with it then leave it until your ready to try something different. Just keep in mind that we are here and always willing to help so before trying to tackle anything come and ask us about it.

I'm happy with the stability. But ultimately, I rooted to do something other than stock. I don't think I'm going to mess with it for a while. Thanks for the help
