Have you all seen some of the newest videos on youtube showing android 2.1 with sense demoed on the HTC Desire? I'm really excited that HTC has overhauled the media player, which has always been a major criticism of android in the past. I think it's now on par with the iphone, with a coverflow style and good integration with the rest of the system when using other programs or being locked. I've always used winmo with A_C's S2Play and have been very happy with it, but it will be a major upgrade going to the SS with htc's programs integrated.

I put a video of the HTC Desire on page 4, post 160 so people could see the interface, which is going to be very similar. Hopefully, we'll have some videos of the Supersonic very soon.

I just read in the Sprint forum that the Supersonic is going to have a 1.3MP front facing camera. That should be sufficient for video conferencing, don't you think?

So who's staying up beyond midnight to see if Sprint posts anything online? Any west coasters?

I am! Actually I tried logging on to see what @billsmed is talking about but got this:

Temporarily Unavailable

We are very sorry, but the systems required to access your account information are currently unavailable.

Not sure if it's just regular maintenance or coincidence but I'm hoping it has something to do with the announcement :)

Must be that big notice they're working on. Actually, where I got the information Cary, was at www.community.sprint.com.

I mentioned before that government and law enforcement agencies want this phone, but the video conferencing would work well for medical emergencies also and that makes sense.

Cool thanks @billsmed! I just saw this too which I'm sure you already saw:

Sprint to announce 'groundbreaking new device' (HTC Supersonic?) tomorrow -- Engadget

Just kind of strange how that chat rep for Sprint spilled the beans like that

Scratch that...I just saw this:

http://www.thesearethedroids.com/2010/03/22/motorola-i1-makes-android-push-to-talk-on-sprint/

So I'm thinking it's just the Moto I1. Bummer

Damn. Just seeing more clues that it's NOT the SS. It's the MOTO I1 first "Revolutionary" Push to Talk android phone. Plus why would Sprint steal Dan Hesse's thunder on Wednesday. They are saving the BIG announcement for Vegas I'm sure...can't wait. Either way it's only 2 days away

I wouldn't worry about the Moto i1 being the "groundbreaking device" being announced tomorrow, which I saw posted on the sprint site when I logged in earlier tonight. The i1 may be what the sprint rep was talking about in that chat though, I don't think they really know what they're talking about and the rep never mentioned Supersonic by name, but rather just went along with what the customer was saying, being agreeable.

If sprint does consider the i1 "groundbreaking" just because it has push to talk on a touchscreen phone, and there is no Supersonic announcement, then they will be laughed at and hated by so many people. The i1 has a 3.1" hvga screen, doesn't even have 3g data (runs on nextel's network), it runs android 1.5, etc... Basically there's nothing groundbreaking about it besides PTT.

Don't get discouraged, the i1 had to be leaked and announced first because it would get no press whatsoever if it was released after the Supersonic. I think this is why the Nexus One was announced earlier this week also, just to get it out there before the SS takes over everyone's mindshare.

That would be way more then enough, 1280x1024, usually you'll be lucky to video chat at 640x480 a lot of the time it is 320x240 even on a desktop computer. I really don't think a phone will be able to do 720p video chatting.

I'm guessing they are just using 1.3MP cameras because they are cheaper/better quality then a .3MP camera. I know Apple switched their MacBooks to 1.3MP cameras but they are software limited to 640x480.

The more I think about it, I think a good hint that the SS has a front camera for video chat is the fact that it has a kickstand. A kickstand would make sense for a phone with a screen this big anyway, for watching videos on a flight for instance, or for using it as a night stand media player/alarm clock, but the hd2 doesn't have one.

If you're video chatting, it doesn't make sense to hold the phone out in front of your face, it would be too shaky. It would be better to set it on a table in front of you and look down at it, or set it on the top of your tv or computer monitor and use the hdmi out to chat through the big screen.

So far all we have to go on about the front camera is the word of Oufei's posts here, which I do believe, but he's not even an insider at htc or sprint, rather he just saw a spec sheet at MWC, or somewhere else at that time.

We will find out soon enough, but it would be a shame to spread the info about the front camera if it turns out to not be true. However, it makes perfect sense because with 4g speeds, they need to expand the things the phones are capable of to take advantage of the network capabilities.

I believe it all adds up to there being a front camera!

I have been another one of the lurkers and thought I would ask a question about the front facing camera if it does indeed have one. Will you be able to use Skype with it and if so how will it work on a G3?

Hi rci124 and welcome to the Supersonic forum. By tomorrow afternoon, most of our questions should be answered and we should have the official specs by then. Right now, we're mostly speculating, but I'm fairly confident that we're in the ball park. The front facing camera is something new we've been talking about, but you can read more about it in post# 116, 139, 140 and 172. You'll see what my comments were in post 172 where I brought up the idea of using Skype. I was speculating also about bringing the picture up on a TV, so the whole family, or any group could be involved in the video conference.

Edit: Carry328is also brought up these posts: 107, 127, 165, 167.

Tomorrow, we're expecting some demonstrations of the Supersonic at the CTIA Wireless trade show in Las Vegas. On the home page of this thread, look for a link to the webcast of Dan Hesse's keynote address, which takes place tomorrow at noon Eastern.

I'm not sure if there's an exact time for today but tomorrow will be Hesse's keynote most likely talking about the Supersonic which will make things official. I think today is more of which tech website can get to the Sprint booth first.

I'm not sure how the front facing camera would work. I would imagine it could work with Skype or any VoIP service but I'm not too knowledgeable on how exactly they work.
